On a frosty Virginia morning, Constance Wus favorite middle school teacher asked her to step outside, before accusing the aspiring writer of plagiarizing a term paper shed written on Beethoven.

You are not good enough to have written this, her teacher said, according to Wu. She wrote about the incident in her new headline-making new book, Making a Scene.

After that, Wu wrote, I didnt want to be a writer anymore.

The story is titled, Of Course She Did, and is one of 18 essays collected in Wus book that chronicles a range of memories throughout her life, including the years the Crazy Rich Asians actor spent portraying Jessica Huang on the TV show Fresh Off the Boat which ran on ABC from 2015 to 2020.

The series was based on a memoir by restaurateur Eddie Huang and followed a Taiwanese family living in Florida during the 1990s. The series brought her fame, then despair. In the book, Wu details sexual harassment at the hands of an unnamed producer, an experience she called “traumatic”at the Atlantic Festival in Washington, D.C. earlier this year.

Then, in 2019, a series of impulsive tweets about its renewal resulted in a fierce backlash from the public along with her peers.

How Did You Find The Courage To Include The Chapters That Were Hard For You

The Huangs’ Dishwasher – Fresh Off The Boat 3×15

When youre writing it, it doesnt feel public, right? Because youre alone in your house or your office and its just you and the page.

And this last essay, the one about Fresh Off the Boat, that I wrote last. I actually didnt want to include it. I didnt want to write about it. I was like, “I handled it, its done, whatever, I dont want to exploit this,” but my editor really encouraged me to write it and I was so resistant.

Finally, I said “OK, Ill do it as an exercise for myself, but Im not going to publish it.” So, I wrote it for myself to work through what happened in my own heart and in my own mind. And it was really healing and helpful to me in a way that I didnt realize.

Its funny, I kind of relate it to a physical wound. If you have a physical wound, you bleed, right? And you have a scar, and you can see that it happened because you have physical proof that it happened.

But with emotional trauma, you dont have physical proof it happened, even though it could have just as great of an effect, if not more, than physical trauma.

But I found that putting words on a page, it almost was like having a witness, like having a scar, having something that showed that this was a real thing. I think it made it real for me in a way that I didnt realize would happen. I decided to include in the book because its very scary to be vulnerable, publicly, and I didnt want to do it.

And Im still scared of it.

Who Is Eddie Huang

In the series, Eddie was the oldest of the Huang’s three children. His younger brothers, Emery and Evan, were model students and generally perfect kids. Eddie was the black sheep of his family, as he did poorly in school and was incredibly invested in Black culture. He was a huge fan of Shaq and loved hip-hop, particularly Tupac and Notorious B.I.G.

The real Eddie Huang’s life was quite similar. His parents, Louis and Jessica Huang, moved his family to Orlando in the mid-1990s where they ran a few successful restaurants. Like his television counterpart, Eddie loved basketball and hip-hop, and he frequently got into trouble. Eventually, both versions of Eddie grew up to be respected chefs, though real-life Eddie took a longer path getting there by trying to be a lawyer and a stand-up comedian first.

It was a really an organic process. I didnt sit down and say, “Im going to write about this event, this event and this event.” I would just have memories pop up that I hadnt fully worked through, like being raped. Putting it down on paper was a way of understanding it and myself better.

So, it a little bit, felt like therapy in that sense. I didnt curate it. I just sort of let my mind and my heart tell me what I wanted to write.

Do You Feel That Art Has Helped You Heal

One hundred percent, especially writing this book. I talk, in this book, about the sense memory exercises I learned when I was in conservatory drama school and applying that exercise to my own life, to revisit past trauma without attaching to the feeling or attaching to judgement or shame, just reliving the sensory elements of it makes you see it in a different way.

And writing was healing to me because you dont have a physical wound when you have an emotional trauma. But words on a page are the closest thing youre going to get to that. And that makes your story feel real and valid and worthy, however small or big the pain may be.

After What You Went Through Three Years Ago How Do You Protect Yourself Or Keep Yourself From Going To A Dark Place

The one thing that I do thats helpful to me and I can only do this now that I have a very secure sense of self and what matters to me, and why the things that matter to me, matter to me I have very strong sense of that.

Ive taken a lot of time to think about that and the noise doesnt matter to me, attention doesnt matter to me its never been about fame or success.

I started as a theater kid it was always about community. It was about the joy of performance. All the other stuff around it is just stuff. And its easy to get caught up in it.

But when theres a lot of negativity, the thing that Ive found is that, usually, peoples commentary is a reflection of them, not a reflection of you because they dont actually know you.

If some person who only knows clickbait, headlines, snippets and thinks they know me, passes judgement and criticism, its a reflection of how they feel about themselves or its an opportunity for them express something that theyve been wanting to get off their chest.

So, if my story is a springboard for them to explore their feelings on something, OK. Because Im OK.

If its something Im not as OK with, like three years ago when I had a suicide attempt, if somebodys scrutinizing that, thats a little bit more tender. Thats a place where Im not as grounded yet.

Eddie Huang Explains Why He Isn’t Watching ‘fresh Off The Boat’

Fresh Off the Boat – Trailer

Ever since the show debuted, Eddie Huang has been openly critical of “Fresh Off the Boat,” the ABC sitcom based on his memoir by the same name. But for a while it seemed like he was behind the network’s toned down version of his childhood. Then, after Tuesday night’s episode, Huang critiqued the show in a series of tweets. ” got so far from the truth that I don’t recognize my own life,” he wrote.

For the record I don’t watch #FreshOffTheBoat on @ABCNetwork

Eddie Huang

I’m happy people of color are able to see a reflection of themselves through #FreshOffTheBoat on @ABCNetwork but I don’t recognize it.

Eddie Huang

My only goal was to represent my Taiwanese-Chinese-American experience & I did that. We also proved viewers want diverse content so make it!

Eddie Huang

I had to say something because I stood by the pilot. After that it got so far from the truth that I don’t recognize my own life.

Eddie Huang

I don’t think it is helping us to perpetuate an artificial representation of Asian American lives and we should address it.
