Displaying Assigned Registration Number
The registration number must be displayed on the boat as follows:
- Numbers must be placed on each side of the forward half of the boat.
- Number must be read from left to right.
- Number must be at least 3 high BLOCK letters.
- Number must contrast with the color of the boat and be clearly visible and legible.
- Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space at least two inches wide.
- Two-toned and camouflage numbers are not legal and should not be used.
New Mexico Boat Registration Numbers
New Mexico boat registration numbers should be affixed to both sides of the forward half of the vessel. These should be the only numbers on the forward half of the boat.
The boat registration numbers must be in three inch, block style lettering. The numbers should be easily read left to right. The registration number color must contrast with its background color.
Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen, for example: NM 1234 AA. No other numbers may be displayed on either side of the bow.
New Mexico boating law states that the owner of each motorboat requiring numbering and inspection by this state shall file an application for number with the division on forms approved by it. The application shall be signed by the owner of the motorboat and shall be accompanied by a three year registration fee as required in Section 66-12-5.1 NMSA 1978. Upon receipt of the application in approved form, the division shall file it and issue to the applicant a certificate of number stating the number awarded to the motorboat and the name and address of the owner.
Missouri Boat Registration Numbers
Missouri boat registration numbers consist of two letters followed by four numbers then two more letters that must be separated by spaces or hyphens, for example: MO 1234 AA. The boat registration number assigned must be attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel; they should be the only numbers on the forward half.
They need to be in a contrasting color to the boat. Numbers should be in a block font and three inches in height.

Arkansas Boat Registration Numbers
Arkansas boat registration numbers must be affixed to the forward half of each side of the vessel placed clearly visible.
The registration number must read from left to right and be at least 3 inches high. It much be in bold, block letters and of a contrasting color with its background.
The letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen, for example: AR-1234-AA. Note: No other numbers should be displayed on either side of the boat.
Arkansas boating law states that every motorboat on the waters of this state shall be numbered. No person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any motorboat on the waters of this state and the identifying number set forth in the certificate of number is displayed on each side of the bow of the motorboat.

Registration Must Be Onboard While Operating
You must have a valid registration card on the vessel before your watercraft may legally be operated on public waters. The three-year registration card is the official document of registration for your watercraft and once ithas been issued, it must be carried aboard the watercraft while in use. If you purchased a used watercraft with valid, current registration, you may operate the vessel for 30 days from the date of purchase provided you carrya dated bill of sale and the former owners valid registration card.

Display Of Registration Numbers
The number issued to your watercraft appears on the registration and is to be displayed on each side of the forward half of the vessel in block letters, at least 3 inches in height, and contrasting in color with hull or background. They may be painted or attached to the watercraft, must read from left to right, and must always be legible.
A space or hyphen must separate both the VA abbreviation and the letter suffix from the numerals.
Example: VA 4696 AF or VA-4696-AF
On vessels so configured that a number on the hull or superstructure would not be easily visible or the number would not remain securely attached , the number may be painted on or the number and decal attached to a backing plate that is attached to the forward half of the vessel so that the number is visible from each side of the vessel.
If the watercraft already has Virginia registration numbers , in most instances those same numbers will be reassigned to the new owner. The Virginia registration number assigned to a watercraft should never be removed from the watercraft unless DGIF assigns new numbers to the vessel.
Ohios Alternative Registration Option
Alternative registration is only an option for human-powered watercraft, such as canoes, rowboats or inflatable rafts.
The boat owner may choose one of the following two options:
- In the upper right corner of the transom.
- On a deck on the rear half of the boat.
- On the outside of the boat below the port side gunwale.
- On the inside of the boat on the upper portion of the starboard side gunwale so that it is visible from the port side of the boat.
Evidence of registration is shown by displaying the rectangular tag. Boaters with an alternative registration have 72 hours to produce the valid registration certificate.
Never choose the alternative registration option if there is a possibility of ever using a motor or a sail with the boat. Alternative registration is issued and renewed through any Ohio Division of Watercraft office.

Nebraska Boat Registration Numbers
The Nebraska assigned registration number should be placed on each side of the front half of the vessel and reading left to right; they should be the only numbers on the forward half of the vessel.
It should start with two capital letters “NB” followed by a hyphen or space and three or four digits, another hyphen or space and two more capital letters in a block style font, for example: NB 1234 AA.
Boat registration numbers should be in a contrasting color to the background as well at three inches in height.
Nebraska boating law states that except as provided in subsections and of this section and sections 37-1249 and 37-1250, every motorboat on the waters of this state shall be numbered and no person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any vessel on such waters unless the vessel is numbered in accordance with the State Boat Act or in accordance with the laws of another state if the commission has by regulation approved the numbering system of such state and unless the certificate of number awarded to such vessel is in full force and effect and the identifying number set forth in the certificate of number is displayed and legible on each side of the forward half of the vessel.

Bill Of Sale For Boat
A Bill of Sale for a boat must have adequate information to positively link the BOS to the boat, similar to the example WRD BOS.
Owners of Georgia registered boats must notify the Department, in writing, of sale or transfer, theft or recovery, or destruction or abandonment of a boat within 15 days.
The following should be on the BOS:
- GA or Other State Registration Number
- HIN #
- Hull Material
- Sellers and Buyers Signature
It is a judgment call whether WRD believes the BOS received is adequate to link the vessel to the BOS in a reasonably sufficient manner, or whether other documents such as a transferred title, a manufacturers statement of origin, or other information supports the submitted BOS. A BOS does not have to be witnessed OR notarized, although this is acceptable.
If it is determined that a BOS is not available at all or is not adequate, the customer should obtain an adequate BOS. If a BOS cannot be obtained, the Affidavit of Vessel Ownership process may be completed.

Using A Pleasure Craft Licence
After you receive your Pleasure Craft Licence, you must use it as follows:
- Carry the Pleasure Craft Licence on board the vessel at all times.
- Display the number on both sides of your boat’s bow. The number must appear in block characters which are:
- at least 7.5 centimetres high
- in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow
There is a $250 fine if you are found operating a vessel without a licence.
