Display Of Registration Numbers

The number issued to your watercraft appears on the registration and is to be displayed on each side of the forward half of the vessel in block letters, at least 3 inches in height, and contrasting in color with hull or background. A space or hyphen must separate both the VA abbreviation and the letter suffix from the numerals.

Example: VA 4696 AF or VA-4696-AF

On vessels so configured that a number on the hull or superstructure would not be easily visible or the number would not remain securely attached , the number may be painted on or the number and decal attached to a backing plate that is attached to the forward half of the vessel so that the number is visible from each side of the vessel.

If the watercraft already has Virginia registration numbers , in most instances those same numbers will be reassigned to the new owner. The Virginia registration number assigned to a watercraft should never be removed from the watercraft unless DGIF assigns new numbers to the vessel.

Ohios Alternative Registration Option

Alternative registration is only an option for human-powered watercraft, such as canoes, rowboats or inflatable rafts.

The boat owner may choose one of the following two options:

  • Traditional registration: They can have the craft numbered, pay a smaller registration fee and obtain square tags, or;
  • Alternative registration: They can choose to NOT have the craft numbered, pay a higher registration fee and obtain a rectangular tag. The rectangular alternative registration tag must be securely attached and displayed in one of the following manners:
    • In the upper right corner of the transom.
    • On a deck on the rear half of the boat.
    • On the outside of the boat below the port side gunwale.
    • On the inside of the boat on the upper portion of the starboard side gunwale so that it is visible from the port side of the boat.

Evidence of registration is shown by displaying the rectangular tag. Boaters with an alternative registration have 72 hours to produce the valid registration certificate.

Never choose the alternative registration option if there is a possibility of ever using a motor or a sail with the boat. Alternative registration is issued and renewed through any Ohio Division of Watercraft office.

    Bill Of Sale For Boat

How to Apply Boat Registration Numbers Like a Pro

A Bill of Sale for a boat must have adequate information to positively link the BOS to the boat, similar to the example WRD BOS.

Owners of Georgia registered boats must notify the Department, in writing, of sale or transfer, theft or recovery, or destruction or abandonment of a boat within 15 days.

The following should be on the BOS:

    • GA or Other State Registration Number
    • HIN #
    • Hull Material
    • Sellers and Buyers Signature

It is a judgment call whether WRD believes the BOS received is adequate to link the vessel to the BOS in a reasonably sufficient manner, or whether other documents such as a transferred title, a manufacturers statement of origin, or other information supports the submitted BOS. A BOS does not have to be witnessed OR notarized, although this is acceptable.

If it is determined that a BOS is not available at all or is not adequate, the customer should obtain an adequate BOS. If a BOS cannot be obtained, the Affidavit of Vessel Ownership process may be completed.
