How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost
Boat insurance costs vary greatly based on the type of boat youre insuring, the size of the boat, what you plan on doing with the boat, and how much coverage you need. The generally accepted estimate on insurance costs for all motored boats is that youll end up paying between 1% and 2% of the value of your boat per year, broken up into equal monthly installments.;

What Boat Insurance Will Pay For
You can typically buy liability insurance which pays for damage your boat does to others in amounts from $15,000 to $300,000, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Heres what else you can expect from a policy:

Check, too, about additional coverage for trailers and accessories, for towing and for damage caused by an uninsured boater.
You can buy two types of damage coverage for a boat:
- Actual cash value. This pays the value of your boat at the time of the damage. If your boat is destroyed, your insurance company determines its market value.

What Should I Look For When Shopping For Boat Insurance
There are many factors to consider when shopping for boat insurance. For starters, youll need to decide if you want a policy that uses an agreed value policy or an actual cash value policy. ACV policies are typically cheaper, but they provide less payout in the event of a total loss.
Furthermore, youll want to look for exclusions and restrictions to boat coverage. For example, some companies will only insure boats up to a certain size, whereas others will not insure boats used for commercial purposes. Knowing the specifics of your boat and what youll use it for can really help you find the best policy to fit your needs.
Once you find several companies that will cover your boat, read the entire list of standard coverage inclusions and compare. Where one company may offer towing as a standard feature, another company may only offer it if you pay an extra monthly fee. Noting these small differences could really save you money.
Finally, consider a companys reputation and the attention it gives to its boat insurance. Some specialty insurance companies focus solely on coverage for boats and other recreational vehicles, while other companies just offer boat insurance as an extra to attract more customers. Noting this can help you get the best coverage from experts who know what theyre doing when it comes to boats.

What States Require Boat Insurance
As of right now, only two states have boat insurance lawsâArkansas and Utah. In Arkansas, all motorboats powered by engines of more than 50 horsepower, and all PWC, must be covered by a liability insurance policy. The policy must provide at least $50,000 of liability coverage, and it is illegal to operate the PWC without the required insurance.
In Utah, all motorboats and PWC are required to carry ownerâs or operatorâs liability insurance when operated on Utah waters. Motorboats equipped with engines less than 50 horsepower and airboats are exempt. It is illegal to operate a PWC on Utah waters without the required insurance.
Utahâs boat insurance policy requires the following minimum coverage limits per occurrence:
- $25,000 for bodily injury per person.
- $50,000 for total bodily injury if multiple people are hurt in the accident.
- $15,000 for property damage.
There are some instances of states requiring insurance for boats used in some state parks or kept in some state-operated marinasâcheck with your state marine board or alternative governing agency to see if you are impacted.

Drew Fryes Consequential Damage Coverage along with subsequent letters from Ron Russell and Gary Golden has put some focus on the issue of boat insurance. As a leading insurer of recreational boats and as one source for Mr. Fryes story, we recognize that we can do better explaining coverages we offer. With some additional changes coming to all BoatUS Marine Insurance Program agreed value policies , wed like to take a moment to do that.
To address Mr. Russells concern, lets look at the three types of things considered in an agreed hull value policy when a partial loss occurs: hard goods, soft goods, and machinery. Note that I am using these terms merely to explain, and this issue confirms that every boater needs to understand their individual policy coverages and terminology.
Depreciation Categories
We encourage all boat owners to keep receipts documenting when equipment has been repaired or replaced as this can be a factor in reducing depreciation applied in the event of a partial loss.
Do I Need Insurance On A Small Trailer
Generally, no. Since a utility trailer isnt motorized, you generally arent required to cover it with a separate insurance policy. Instead, the liability coverage you already have for your tow vehicle will protect you in the event youre liable for injuries or damages while pulling the trailer.21 mai 2021

What Boat Renters Should Consider
As someone looking to rent a boat, here are some simple things to consider before renting out a vessel.
Where Can I Go?
When you plan to take out a boat, you should ask the owner are there any restrictions on where you can travel. If renting in the United States for example, the majority of boat owners will only allow you to travel on American waters.
There may also be restrictions on how far off the coast you can travel but this can easily be cleared up by simply asking the boat owner directly.
Usually the restrictions are to keep within 12 miles of the coast but this can vary.
What happens If I Damage The Boat?
This is another important question to ask the boat owner. Will the insurance company cover any damages to the boat or are you liable as the renter?
It’s important to be clear on this before heading out on the boat.
Does The Boat Owners Insurance Policy Cover Renters?
Seems obvious but it’s really important to ensure the boat owner has the correct insurance policy to keep you as the renter protected.
It’s also best to get this in writing too
Are There Any Scenarios Where I Might Not Be Covered?
As a renter, you should be crystal clear on how you might not be covered so as to avoid scenarios like that. The boat owner will provide you with the specifics of this and if they don’t, you can simply move onto another boat to rent.
What Exactly Is Covered In The Rental Insurance Policy?
