Throughout our skin care coverage, medical experts have lauded various types of sunscreen spray, mineral, acne and kids, to name a few for protecting you from the suns ultraviolet rays, which can lead to skin cancer, sunburns and signs of aging. Spray sunscreen in particular has garnered notable attention recently after Johnson & Johnson voluntarily recalled five sunblocks containing low levels of benzene, a carcinogen that can be absorbed by the skin, according to board-certified dermatologist , MD. In a press release, Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Aveeno and Neutrogena sunscreens, noted this recall impacts only the aerosol version of the below sunscreens:
- Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen
- Neutrogena Ultra Sheer aerosol sunscreen
- Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense aerosol sunscreen
- Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen
- Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen
To learn more about benzene and what the Johnson & Johnson recall means to your everyday sunscreen needs, we consulted dermatologists about the concerns around benzene, plus common misconceptions about spray sunscreens. They also made the argument for continued regular sunscreen use.
What To Look For In A Sunscreen
With so many different active ingredients and types of sunscreens, it can be overwhelming to know what to look for. The FDA complicated matters a bit more when it proposed a new rule in February 2019 calling for more research on certain sunscreen ingredients. We are requesting additional information on these ingredients so that we can evaluate their GRASE status in light of changed conditions, including substantially increased sunscreen usage and exposure and evolving information about the potential risks associated with these products since they were originally evaluated, the agency wrote.
The FDA also recently found that seven common sunscreen chemicals can be absorbed into your bloodstream, although it stated that doesnt mean you should necessarily stop using those ingredients: The fact that an ingredient is absorbed through the skin and into the body does not mean that the ingredient is unsafe.
One of the experts we talked to, Dr. Elisabeth G. Richard, a member of the photobiology committee at The Skin Cancer Foundation, says if people are concerned about absorption they should use physical options, and, Out of an abundance of caution, pregnant and nursing women may want to consider using mineral sunscreens.
In the world of chemical sunscreens, there are two active ingredients you should definitely avoid: aminobenzoic acid and trolamine salicylate. In 2019, the FDA proposed that these do not meet the standards to be safe and effective for sunscreen use.

How To Choose Sunscreen And Sun Protection Products
People who want to get the most from their sunscreen should ensure their chosen product includes the following:
- Broad spectrum protection: This means that the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, both of which can cause skin cancer and premature aging.
- SPF of 30 or higher: The Food and Drug Administration recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. However, according to the American Cancer Society , sunscreens with an SPF factor of 15 only filter out around 93% of UVB rays. SPFs of 30 filter out 97%, while SPFs of 50 or more filter out 9899%. For this reason, the ACS recommends wearing an SPF of at least 30.
- Water resistance: For water and sporting activities, a water resistant sunscreen can be a good option. By ensuring the sunscreen specifies how long the product is water resistant for, a person can be confident when to reapply.
The ACS advises always reading the label before purchasing sunscreen.
Sunscreens have a shelf life of around 23 years, and a person should check the expiration date before use as an expired product might not provide appropriate protection. The

Pca Skin Spray Sunscreen
PCAs non-aerosol continuous spray sunscreen allows you to evenly coat skin. The product was created specifically for people who engage in outdoor activities like hiking and sports, as it provides sweat-resistant broad spectrum protection. This spray sunscreen was designed in compliance with Hawaii Act 104, which prohibits the sale and distribution of sunscreens that contain the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate in Hawaii. Since PCAs spray sunscreen meets these standards, its ocean- and environmental-friendly.
How Much Sunscreen Should I Use
To get the SPF listed on the bottle, you need to put 2 mg/cm2 on your skin. That means the average-size adult needs roughly a shot glasss worth of sunscreen for their mostly naked body . So, as you may have just concluded, you are almost certainly not using enough sunscreen. A 2014 study showed that people typically use a quarter to half as much sunscreen as they need to per application to meet the advertised SPF.
Spray sunscreens are trickier, as its hard to tell how much ends up on your skin, but if youre headed to the beach in a bikini or similar, weve found that spraying the sunscreen close to your body for roughly two minutes in a windlessbut well-ventilatedarea should do the trick.
Apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, since it takes that long for the formula to fully sink into your skin, and then again once every hour , plus every time after you work up a sweat or go in the water.
A note about water resistance: Some sunscreen makers claim their formulas are water resistant, but no sunscreen is waterproof or sweatproof. As such, you should never count on sunscreen to stick to your skin after youve gone for a swim or worked out, and you should definitely reapply after you do either of those things. Per FDA regulations, sunscreen can be labeled as water resistant for only up to 80 minutes, by which point you likely should have reapplied anyway.

The Best Sunscreens Of 2021
Regardless of your lighter skinned, darker skinned or somewhere in the middle, protecting your skin from the sun is important. Theres no worse way to ruin what was an amazing day at the beach than getting home and realizing youre as red as a lobster. And even if you dont burn so easily , its still important to shield yourself from exposure to the suns rays, since it can cause damage to your skin in other ways, including skin cancer and premature aging. Thats why wearing a proper sunscreen is essential when spending time in the sun. But even if trips to the beach are getting few and far between, that doesnt mean you should stop wearing sunscreen, since you should be wearing it indoors anyway as part of your skin care routine .
To help you find the best sunscreen, we talked to experts about the active ingredients and other important factors you should look for. We narrowed down a pool of 12 contenders and went hands-on with each of them for several weeks. Our pool included both mineral and chemical broad-spectrum sunscreens with a minimum SPF of 30. We avoided sunscreens that have oxybenzone, or either of the two active ingredients the FDA proposed as unsafe .

Are Chemical Sunscreens Safe
Researchers have long known that some chemical UV filters can reach the bloodstream, and have detected varying amounts of these active ingredients in urine and breast milk. In a May 2019 study, researchers at the FDA confirmed that avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsulefour of the most common ingredients in chemical sunscreens and combination formulasremained in the bloodstreams of 24 adult study participants who were assigned to reapply one of four commercially available sunscreens four times a day for four days in the lab. In some cases, these active ingredients were still detectable in varying concentrations in the participants blood for days after their last application. The researchers write that further studies are needed to determine the clinical significance of this finding and note that their findings to date do not indicate that individuals should refrain from the use of sunscreen.
In January 2020, FDA researchers released results from a follow-up study, which showed thatin addition to avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylenehomosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate in sunscreen creams, lotions, and sprays can also reach and remain in the bloodstream. Without further testing, the FDA does not know what levels of absorption can be considered safe, states a press release from the agency.

For people who prefer a formula with only physical UV blockers or who need a reef-safe sunscreen, we recommend Thinksport SPF 50+. Like our other picks, its water resistant for up to 80 minutes and offers broad-spectrum protection. The Thinksport sunscreen costs nearly four times as much per ounce as our Coppertone pick.
Like most zinc-oxide-based formulas weve tested , the Thinksport sunscreen can be difficult to rub in and can leave a white cast. But some people prefer physical sunscreens for this reason: They can more clearly see where they have applied an opaque lotion versus a nearly invisible one.
Because the minerals in physical sunscreens dont repel UV rays as efficiently as chemical filters absorb them, its difficult to formulate a physical sunscreen with a high effective SPF, said Dr. Henry Lim, a Detroit-based dermatologist and Skin Cancer Foundation spokesperson. This makes Thinksports 50+ rating on this lotion appealing with proper use, it shouldin theoryprovide at least the expert-recommended minimum SPF of 30.
Thinksports spartan ingredient list may appeal to those with sensitive skin, though people with sensitive noses might not feel the same way. The formula contains added fragrance that gives it a strong fruity smell.

Best Sunscreens & Toxic Ones To Avoid
May 4, 2021
Its no secret that the sun provides all sorts of health benefits, including helping our bodies manufacture vital vitamin D. With warmer weather right around the corner, though, many people are looking for the best sunscreens to cut their risk of sun overexposure, sunburns and possiblyskin cancer
Environmental Working Groups 15th annual Guide to Sunscreens is a mix of good and bad news when it comes to the state of sunscreens sold in American and beyond. For instance, oxybenzone a suspected hormone-disrupting chemical that is readily absorbed into the body is now present in 40 percent of the 1,800 products EWG investigated. While that may seem high, consider this: two years ago, about 60 percent of sunscreens contained this concerning chemical.
In December, the National Toxicology Program released findings linking oxybenzone exposure to a higher risk of thyroid tumors in female rats. And at the end of March, the European Commission, which reviews ingredient safety in Europe, published a final opinion finding oxybenzone unsafe for use at current levels.
Yet again, the sunscreen market is flooded with products that use potentially harmful ingredients and provide poor UVA protection, said Leiba. EWGs guide is one of the only tools available to help consumers find products that provide adequate protection and are made without ingredients that may pose health concerns.
