Freedom Boat Club Buys Back Franchisees Chicago Units And Territory

When the owner of Freedom Boat Club of Chicago came to corporate in fall of 2020 asking to exit the system, it was an opportunity the brand couldnt pass up, said network president Cecil Cohn.

The franchisee, who originally purchased the territory in late 2013, had grown the business to three locations in downtown Chicago and one in a Northwest suburb and he said ya know, I really enjoy building these things from scratch, but now its just scalingwould be interested in buying the clubs and territory back from me? Cohn recalled.

Cecil Cohn, Freedom Boat Club network president;

Freedom Boat Cluba membership-based marine club requiring monthly dues in exchange for access to boats at any of its locationsentered into a definitive agreement in mid-March to acquire the Chicago units and territory, including the rights to build out new clubs in portions of Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. With access to Lake Michigan and a number of inland lakes and river in the suburbs, Chicago scores high on markets that Freedom Boat Club hopes to build out, plus allows the brand better access to expand into the Upper Midwest.

The market potential of this territory was really attractive, as we can grow it over time and bring to there all the resource capabilities of Freedom Boat Club as a parent company to potentially accelerate growth faster than the franchisee was able to do on its own, Cohn said. Its the kind of situation that went from great to even better.

Waterfront Veteran Buys Marina

BRYAN EATON/Staff photoMike Goodridge, left, who owns TowboatUS and manages Freedom Boat, and his son, Jake, have bought Yankee Landing Marina on Merrimac Street in Newburyport.

NEWBURYPORT Nautical entrepreneur Mike Goodridge owns several businesses on the waterfront, and he recently added to his holdings by buying;Yankee Landing Marina on outer Merrimac Street.

Goodridge also runs TowboatU.S. of Newburyport, Beverly and Boston, and his team manages Freedom Boat, a franchise service in the city that permits people to rent power boats rather than buy them. In addition, he is a diver and a salvage specialist.

“We bought the marina because the timing seemed right,” said Goodridge, 63. “If the Waterfront West development does happen, we would have to relocate our Freedom Boat offices and other services.

“This marina is running and we’re very busy right now,” he said.

Yankee Landing Marina offers 27 moorings, 50 active slips, and room to store about 75 boats in the winter. Goodridge bought the marina from Ronald Guertin.

Goodridge’s son, Jake Goodridge, 37, is president of the recently purchased marina and a key manager in everything the Goodridge team does.;

William Watts, a boat owner at the marina, praised the Goodridges.

“I’m pleased with the way things are starting,” Watts said. “The new team is very experienced, and warm weather means that owners want to get into their boats.”

“And it has been ,” he said. “We’ve helped many boaters.”

Summer in the U.S. usually synonymous with boating, but this summer, boat sales are off the charts and availability is scarce. According to the Brunswick Corporation, the company that owns Mercury, Boston Whaler, Lund, Bayliner, Sea Ray, Lowe Boats, among other well-known brands, you can credit the pandemic for driving more people into boating in the past 18 months.

Last summer when COVID hit, demand for boats went through the roof, said Lee Gordon, a Vice President at Brunswick, noting that boating rose in popularity because it was an activity where people could safely social distance with their family and recreate at the same time. Buying a boat is tough right now as demand far outweighs what is in the market. We are currently selling boats into 2023.

Why Does The Cost Of The One

The cost of the one-time membership fee is based upon local market conditions, and;those;can vary widely.

Just as a;2000-square foot house in Seattle, WA or San Francisco, CA would cost significantly more than the same house in Sarasota, FL or Clemson, SC, marina costs can differ vastly from market to market.

If an FBC franchise is operating in a popular boating destination, the marina operator can command top dollar. The franchise owner is competing for limited slip space against other entities, including boat owners or other commercial interests. The more;a marina charges for slip fees, dock and office space, etc., the more costly it is for;the;FBC franchise owner to operate;the business. This means that the one-time entry fee is generally higher in larger metropolitan markets.

Historic Buildings And Sites

By the end of the twentieth century, many of Sarasota’s more modest historical structures were demolished. Recently, two historic buildings, the Crocker Church and the Bidwell-Wood House , first restored by Veronica Morgan and members of the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation that she founded, became city property. These structures were relocated to this park, despite protests from residents who objected to the loss of park area.

In the late 1970s, Sarasota County purchased the Terrace Hotel that was built by Charles Ringling and renovated it for use as a county government office building. The that he donated to the new county in 1921 has been listed on the . The courthouse complex was designed by .

In the next decade the landmark hotel built by , the , which had been turned into apartments became endangered. By then it was called the John Ringling Towers and was purchased by a phosphate miner, Gardinier, who wanted to turn it into his corporate headquarters. All of the tenants were turned out and plans were made for the restoration of the building. The city commissioners supported the plan initially, but lobbying to undermine the project began and one of the commissioners changed her vote. The project was denied at the final hearing. The enraged miner abandoned the city and subsequent owners, seeking to demolish it, made garish changes to the building to make it unappealing before finally leaving it open for vagrants to invade and pilfer.

The Truth About Freedom Boat Club

    I almost didnt do it

Growing up we always had a boat and recently Ive been itching to get one.

But then I started crunching the numbers

You need to pay for the down payment, monthly payments, registration, insurance, maintenance, trailer, and storage, among other things.

Plus, you only have one boat.

What if I want to take my kids out tubing, or go bass fishing, or get into some skinny water looking for snook and redfish?

One type of boat is not ideal for the variety of activities we like to do on the water

Which lead me to Freedom Boat Club.

Id heard lots of misinformation about Freedom Boat Club regarding their prices, the number of times you can take their boats out, etc., so Freedom Boat Club wasnt even on my radar for the longest time

But the price of getting my own boat made me reevaluate my options.

In this podcast episode, I have my man Alex Anchor from the Winter Haven Freedom Boat Club to help talk about the pros, cons, and misconceptions when it comes to Freedom Boat Club.

Im not getting paid by them and this is not a sponsored post, but Salt Strong is all about helping you make memories on the water with your loved ones and this is one of the best deals Ive done when it comes to boating and fishing.

Ive been enjoying being a part of the Club and I just wanted to share this with you in hopes of clearing up some misconceptions.
