We slather these ingredients on our skin, but these chemicals havent been adequately tested, Leiba says. This is just one example of the backward nature of product regulation in the U.S.
Beyond safety issues is another question: Does sunscreen even work? Environmental Working Groups found that nearly 75 percent of sunscreens dont work and/or contain concerning ingredients that are readily absorbed by the body.
Things may be slowing moving in the right direction, but for now, the onus is still on the consumer to find sunscreen thats safer and actually works.

The options for sunscreens are seemingly endless: sprays, lotions, sticks, not to mention the range of SPF numbers. But theres another important number you should be looking for – an expiration date.
Dr. Mark Abdelmalek, a board-certified dermatologist and ABC News contributor says, We remind people to put it on but we honestly dont remind them often enough to check to make sure that its a product thats still effective.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says sunscreen usually expires three years after it is manufactured but sometimes even sooner – because it can physically change and chemicals breakdown, which could cause it to be less effective.
But Dr. Abdelmalek says thats not the case if youre leaving your sunscreen out in the sun or in a hot car. He says its not going to last as long, though its not clear how much faster it loses effectiveness.
ABC News Gio Benitez hit the beach in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, with Dr. Abdelmalek to spot-check expiration dates.
One group “GMA” walked up to had a sunscreen that was manufactured eight years ago and expired more than five years ago.
Benitez points out that another persons sunscreen expired in August of last year.
Five out of the nine beach-going groups we talked to had at least one bottle of expired sunscreen.
The oldest we found expired in January 2015.

According to board-certified dermatologist Harold Lancer, MD, people often think spray sunscreen is more effective than its cream, lotion and gel counterparts. However, that might not be the case. Whether or not spray sunscreen is effective at protecting skin also has to do with how often its reapplied. He said sunscreen in any form should not be depended on alone its best when paired with sun-avoidance accessories, like sunglasses, hats and visors.
Because spray sunscreen is usually an aerosol product, Lancer said applying it can be quite difficult. Researchers have long known that some chemical UV filters can reach the bloodstream, and have detected varying amounts of these active ingredients in urine and breast milk. In a May 2019 study, researchers at the FDA confirmed that avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsulefour of the most common ingredients in chemical sunscreens and combination formulasremained in the bloodstreams of 24 adult study participants who were assigned to reapply one of four commercially available sunscreens four times a day for four days in the lab. In some cases, these active ingredients were still detectable in varying concentrations in the participants blood for days after their last application. The researchers write that further studies are needed to determine the clinical significance of this finding and note that their findings to date do not indicate that individuals should refrain from the use of sunscreen.
In January 2020, FDA researchers released results from a follow-up study, which showed thatin addition to avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylenehomosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate in sunscreen creams, lotions, and sprays can also reach and remain in the bloodstream.
