Lepley has used the colorful and flowing pennants on his own 60-foot dock for the past eight years and hasn’t had a bird problem since. Worked pretty good while I had the boat docked for two seasons here in Florida. Never had bird poop on it when I got there. Make sure to pick them up when going out though…One time I left them on deck and went under a drawbridge. The bridge operator freaked out and hailed us on channel 16 to warn us of the snakes on the boat.

How Seagulls Can Spread Diseases

Before wrapping up this guide, I just wanted to talk a little more about the health implications of not dealing with the seagulls who are making your boat their meeting place.

The main reason you probably came to this page in the first place was because you were sick and tired of cleaning up seagull poop and crap from your boat.

But the consequences can be way more serious than simply the inconvenience and cost of a clean-up operation.

There was a recent academic study where microbiologists at the Central Michigan University found that seagull populations have been growing in the Great Lakes region by 10% year in year since the late 1970s.

This was part in due to how much opportunity the seagulls found to feed, but with this increase in the bird numbers, it also brought a lot of bacterial risks to the local population, including boaters.

The study found that seagulls were bringing increased levels of bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia to the local beaches.

One microbiologist had this to say upon release of the studys findings:

For some beaches theyve been implicated as the primary source of E. coli. That bacterias presence can indicate a sewage leak, so it confuses water quality tests when it comes from birds. But it poses a real health risk. The only real way to keep them away is to change how we discard things.

This is why its so important to put a proper bird deterrent method in place on your boat.

Health Risks And Hazards

Because bird droppings can carry parasites and bacteria that are transmissible to humans, droppings also carry health risks. Bird droppings can also create slip-and-fall hazards, especially when surfaces are already wet.

All told, there are approximately 60 transmissible diseases that are hazardous to humans. When bird droppings dry, disturbing them can cause dust, and bacteria, to become airborne.

Though many of these diseases occur in those who are already immunocompromised, and the really young and really old, they can be severe. Some of the diseases transmitted by bird droppings include histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, salmonellosis, which often occurs as food poisoning, and E. coli.

Some diseases like histoplasmosis may have no early symptoms, while others like salmonellosis and E. coli are often apparent. Even just cleaning droppings can expose a person to the bacterium that cause these diseases, so take precautions like gloves, masks and frequent handwashing when cleaning up bird droppings.
