After months of research, comparison shopping, and more, you are ready to take the plunge. You did your due diligence and found a vessel that is the perfect size and has all you want. Importantly, the boat is right in the price range of what you can afford. Closing the deal can be one of the most exciting moments you may have experienced, and you look forward to taking out your boat for that first trip on the water. Before you get too far ahead of yourself, you want to be sure that you have taken care of all the necessary paperwork so that you can legally sail your vessel. Knowing how to register a boat in BC and other Canadian provinces will help you make sure you have all you need for your sailing pleasure.

What Is A Hull Identification Number

The Hull Identification Number is a 12 or 14 character serial number that uniquely identifies a boat. The HIN is analogous to a VIN on a car. All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972, must bear a HIN, and this HIN must be identified during the boat registration process. Vessels manufactured or imported before 1972 are EXEMPT because they often do not have a HIN.

The HIN is found on a metal or plastic plate, typically on the transom of the boat, usually on the right starboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. On vessels without transoms, or impractical to use transoms, the HIN is usually affixed to the starboard outboard side of hull, aft, within one foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. On catamarans and pontoon boats with replaceable hulls, the HIN is usually affixed to the aft crossbeam, within one foot of the starboard hull attachment.

Boat Is Registered In Another State

From a vessel title state: Buyer should obtain a detailed bill of sale from the seller and the original out of state title showing transfer to their name, and the original state registration card if available. All transfers of ownership must be on the title.

From a non-title state: Buyer should obtain a detailed bill of sale from the seller and the original state registration card. The seller should be the owner if record in that state, and if not bills of sale back to the owner of record must be submitted.

Obtaining A Temporary Permit

Upon purchase of a newly acquired boat, vessel, or outboard motor you may purchase a temporary permit to operate the boat, vessel, or outboard motor on Missouriâs waterways.

  • If the unit is not a documented vessel, a temporary permit will be issued for a period of up to 30 days, and must expire prior to the 60th day from the purchase date of the boat, vessel, or outboard motor. If the unit is a documented vessel, a temporary permit will be issued for a period of up to 60 days from the temporary permit issuance date.
  • The applicant may be a Missouri or out-of-state resident.
  • Temporary permits are non-renewable.
  • Temporary permits may not be purchased once application for title and registration has been made.
  • Temporary permits may NOT be purchased for a salvage boat, vessel, or outboard motor.

To obtain a temporary permit, please bring the following items with you to any Missouri license office:

  • One of the following ownership documents:
    • Temporary Watercraft Certificate of Number – $11.00
    • Temporary Outboard Motor Registration Number – $8.00

    The temporary permit must be carried in the boat or vessel while the unit is in operation.

    A vessel not exempt from titling must be titled at the same time it is registered. To issue a Florida Certificate of Title for a new or used vessel purchased in or outside of Florida, the owner of the vessel must bring the appropriate titling fee and the following documents into a tax collector or license plate agent office:

    Generally, boats must be registered in their state if they have a gasoline, diesel or electric motor, including a trolling motor. Personal Watercrafts are considered motorized crafts and needs to be registered in most states. Sailboats without auxiliary power must be registered if over a certain size like eight feet, but that differs by state. The registration requirements for kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, rowboats and other human-powered craft also differ by state but most dont need to be registered.

    Boats And Vessels Are Not Required To Be Titled Or Registered In The State Of Missouri If They Are:

    • Owned by out-of-state residents and housed, stored, or operated in the state of Missouri for less than 60 consecutive days
    • Owned by the United States Government
    • From a country other than the United States using the waters of this state for less than 60 consecutive days
    • Propelled solely by paddle or oars
    • Sailboats or sailboards 12 feet or less in length or
    • A ship’s lifeboat used solely for lifesaving purposes.

    Vessels documented by the United States Coast Guard are not required to be titled, but must be registered.
