Many of these boat requirements concern the correct type of equipment a boater is required to carry on the boat for proper use and in the case of an emergency.

Drivers who fail to adhere to state boating laws may face civil or criminal legal penalties, similar to drivers who break motor vehicle driving laws. Some examples of important boating rules that all drivers in Colorado should know about include:

Most states don’t require boaters to purchase insurance for their watercraft. However, many marinas do require some form of insurance if you wish to use a slip or mooring. Additionally, your bank will require insurance if you are financing the purchase of a boat. Even if these requirements don’t apply in your situation, it’s still generally a good idea to get boat insurance.

Is Boat Insurance Expensive

As is the case with almost anything you purchase, the more research and price comparison you doâthe higher likelihood that you will find the boat insurance quote that is right for you. Here are some tips to ensure that you are getting your moneyâs worth and keeping your costs down:

  • Only buy what you need: There are lots of options out there for marine insurance and many of these policies are custom-written. Ensure that you know what you need so you can avoid paying for features that you donât require.
  • Agreed value vs. Cash value: In an agreed value policy, you are paid a pre-determined value for the vessel in the event of a total covered loss. With agreed value, the insured and insurer agree on the value of the boat upfront. Most agents would recommend this option for a new or late-model boat. As the boat continues to age, look to potentially switch to a cash value option to save on premiums.
  • Take a boater safety course: Almost all insurers offer a discount for boaters that have recently completed an approved boater safety course. Take an in-person class or get your boat safety certification online. Check with your insurance agent to see if a discount is offered for your specific policy.
  • Spend on safety gear: Insurance companies may cut you an additional discount for having extra safety features onboard your vessel. Check with your insurance agent to see if you qualify for any additional savings.

Your Lender Requires It

While Arizona does not require you to have boat insurance, your lender might. If you purchased a new boat and had to finance it, your lender might have certain stipulations for loaning you the money. By requiring you to have insurance, it protects their investment in case you total your boat. Lets imagine you get into a crash where your boat is a total loss. Without insurance, youd still be responsible for paying what you owe to your lender. But with insurance, youll get a check for your losses you can give to the lender.

Weather Can Be Dangerous

Boats can be difficult to store, making them more vulnerable to natural disasters like flooding, fires, or even dust storms. While youre probably checking up on your boat at least every couple of weeks in the summer, you might be less likely to do so in the winter when things cool off a bit. You might not even realize your boat has been affected until weeks later, when the damage is too late to repair. This can be extremely expensive to deal with out of pocket, which is why insurance is so helpful.

What Is Colorado Boat Insurance

Boat insurance is designed to cover motorized boats and vessels that have sails. If your boat is stolen or damaged, or if you are responsible for an accident out on the water, this insurance can cover the resultant costs.

Although your homeowners insurance or renters insurance policy may be able to offer some protection for your boat, this coverage is typically very limited. Rather than risk facing large financial damage that could have been avoided, you can invest in an affordable boat insurance policy. Independent agents can help.

The Rules And Etiquette Of Boating In Colorado

Terry WickstromSpecial to The Denver Post

With waters across Colorado opening for boating, this is a good time to review some rules and etiquette that help make water-based activities safe.

For a state with limited surface water, Colorado has a large boating community including wake boarders, water skiers, anglers, personal watercraft users and a host of other motorized boating enthusiasts. Add to that the explosion of interest in kayaking and paddle boarding and at times the water can get crowded.

The first thing we all need to remember is we are all out there to have fun. There is no sinister plot by one group to disrupt another. In fact my family and I participate in a variety of activities. Unfortunately many people are new to water-based recreation and are not aware of the safety requirements and rules of interaction.

Jim Hawkins, the Boating Safety and Education Coordinator from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, joined me on my radio show last Saturday to discuss the rules and a common sense approach to having fun on the water.

His number one concern is the use of personal flotation devices. The minimum requirement for all vessels is to have an approved PFD onboard for every individual. This includes paddleboard and kayaks. Anyone under 13 years of age must be wearing their PFD at all times. Other violations he warned against were having more passengers than the rated capacity of the craft and operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol.

  • Bodily injury liabilityâBodily injury liability coverage is the part of your insurance policy that pays for the costs associated with injuries to other people involved, if you are found legally responsible for a boating accident.
  • Hull coverageâHull insurance covers any physical damages that occur to your boat and generally includes trailers, equipment, motors, and accessories. Typical claims include fire and windstorm damage.
  • Fuel spill liabilityâA separate policy that separates out fuel spill liability and provides coverage for any fines that may occur from an accident involving a fuel spill.

What States Require Boat Insurance

As of right now, only two states have boat insurance lawsâArkansas and Utah. In Arkansas, all motorboats powered by engines of more than 50 horsepower, and all PWC, must be covered by a liability insurance policy. The policy must provide at least $50,000 of liability coverage, and it is illegal to operate the PWC without the required insurance.

In Utah, all motorboats and PWC are required to carry ownerâs or operatorâs liability insurance when operated on Utah waters. Motorboats equipped with engines less than 50 horsepower and airboats are exempt. It is illegal to operate a PWC on Utah waters without the required insurance.

Utahâs boat insurance policy requires the following minimum coverage limits per occurrence:

  • $15,000 for property damage.

What To Do In A Boating Accident

If you are involved in or come across a boating accident, there are essential steps you need to take:

  • Stop at the scene and assist others if you can do so safely. This is required by law.
  • Dont risk lives to save equipment and ask for help.
  • Each person who was involved in the accident must file an accident report. By law, you must exchange names, addresses, vessel IDs and the name of the owner of the boat.

If you are in a boating accident, you can file using a boating accident report form within five days of the incident if there was a loss of life or disappearance from a vessel, an injury that required medical treatment or property damage that exceeds $2,000 or complete loss of the vessel.

Most boating accidents are caused by careless operations, excessive speeding and failure to pay attention. The leading cause of boating fatalities is capsizing and boating under the influence .

Why Is Boating Insurance Recommended

Boating insurance is recommended for two main reasons, both of which can save you thousands of dollars.

  • If you dont have liability coverage on your boat, you can be sued for damage to property or for any injury your boat causes. While property damage isnt cheap, this is especially important when considering the possibility of injuring either a passenger or another boater. Weve seen uninsured boaters be liable for literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.
  • Your boat is a HUGE investment. If your boat is ever damaged, you dont want to eat that expense. Not only do you want to not suffer financially, but youre going to want to buy a new boat!

    Homeowners’ Insurance Is Not Enough

Why does separate boat insurance matter? Even if you have a form of watercraft insurance under your homeowners’ policy, it may not be enough to cover your incident. The amount of boat coverage will vary from policy to policy. While the policy may cover any damage that occurs to your boat while you have it parked on your property, it likely won’t cover any damages or liability on the road or in the water, including accidents and sunken vessels. Purchasing boat insurance separately will provide you with exactly the coverage you need.
