Must Have For Boat Owners

Reasons Boat Owners Should Carry Boat Insurance Year

What IS THIS?!!! Must Have for Boat Owners |Buying A Bass Boat 101

If youre a boat owner, you may be asking yourself: why should I insure my boat year round, especially when I only get to use it for a few months? Its a good question, and one that all boat owners ask at some point. The main reason boat owners cancel their boat insurance after every season is to save money. The truth is, it can actually be more expensive in the long run. If youre considering only getting boat insurance during the boating season, here are five reasons to carry boat insurance year round.

  • Its most likely required.

Boats are expensive investments. Chances are youve financed yours instead of paying cash upfront. If thats the case, boat owners are usually required by lenders to carry insurance all year round. It makes sense, after all, since the lenders are making an investment as well. They need to protect that investment all year, not just during the boating off-season. Besides lenders, marinas may also require you to have boat insurance in order to dock at their facility.

  • Theres risk out of the water, too.

At a minimum, boat insurance should protect you from fire, theft and vandalism, which, unfortunately, happen all year round. Moreover, these unforeseen events are more likely to occur in the winter months, when boatyards are typically unattended.

  • Collision damage Covers repair or replacement of your boat in the event of a collision.
  • Property damage liability Covers damage caused to someone elses boat, dock or other related property or structures.

Dealers must not paint the licence number on any pleasure craft, since pleasure craft owners must apply for another licence number once they purchase the pleasure craft.

    Towing & Trailering Your Boat

Trailering you boat makes it possible to visit new bodies of water, but for many new boat owners towing safely requires another new skill set that is part of boat ownership.

    Your Tow Vehicle

The first item to check is that your tow vehicle is rated to tow the boat you will buy.

    • Check the vehicle owners manual carefully to find the maximum tow rating, and the Gross Combined Vehicle Rating , which is the weight of the tow vehicle and the boat and trailer; and that weight should include the weight of boat fuel, water and gear.
    • Dont buy a boat only to discover youll need a new truck to tow it.

    Insurance Coverage for Roadside Assistance

You may also want to consider getting insurance coverage for roadside assistance, in case your tow vehicle breaks down while trailering your boat. Progressives Roadside Assistance, for example, provides 24/7 coverage including towing, jump starts, winching, fuel delivery, vehicle lockout, and flat tires.

Pro Tip: If your boat sways from side to side when trailering, pull over and redistribute the load. Swaying is very dangerous, and usually results from improper tongue weight . In most cases, tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of the overall package weight.

    Ryobi Pinless Moisture Meter

    Ryobi Pinless Moisture Meter

If you have a pesky water leak around a deck hatch or window and when squirting it with water, you cant see the path of the water, you may need to up your game. I suggest adding a moisture meter to your kit. When I bought my first one, I took it everywhere in my pocket, even to Flanagans Sports Bar. I played with that darn thing until I started to understand its characteristics. You too will need to spend some time with this tool for it to be effective for you as well, but its time well spent. There are several brands, but make sure you buy a pinless model, meaning it does not have to actually probe the surface to read moisture. Instead it lays flat on the surfaces. Lowes or Home Depot is a good source for this. Prices range from $40 to $60.

    Sunscreen And Lip Balm

Nobody wants severely sunburned skin after a fun-filled day on the boat. I would recommend you to keep a good quality sunscreen to protect yourself from the sunlight.

Continuous exposure can result in overly dry, irritated, and burnt skin.

Just like sunscreen, lip balm is highly essential. A full day under the sun with no protection for your lips may end up into dry, chapped lips. In some cases, people get blisters, so do not overlook the importance of a lip balm or chapstick.

    First Aid And Safety Kit

    First

It is also important to have a first aid kit on board while you are out on the water.

This will help you deal with any emergency that might arise while out on the water or even at the beach.

In your safety kit, you will also need emergency equipment.

You need to make sure it contains:

    • Flares in case you need to signify your location. This electronic flare never expires and meets USCG regulations.
    • Bandages etc.
    • A handy multi-tool with a screwdriver, cutting edges, different wrench sizes, etc.
    • A loud whistle
    • A water-proof case

A properly packed safety kit can help you in any emergency. You should place all this in a dry box and store it somewhere on the vessel.

The WindRider USCG Boating Safety Kit has an electric flare, a first aid kit, a whistle, a multi-tool, and it comes in a waterproof case!

Be aware that some US Coast Guard vessel classifications require a first aid manual and adequate supplies.

Some other things that you could keep in case of emergency are spare towels or spare clothes.

    Completing The Bill Of Sale

In order to transfer the ownership of the boat, you must complete a form known as a bill of sale. This form confirms the ID number of the vessel, its official name and its current port, listed in the registry. The form will also include the details of your name and address, as well as the name and address of the buyer or buyers. You must complete this form before you fill in any other type of paperwork, in order to establish the transaction in a document.

    Completing The Statement Of Qualification

Alongside the bill of sale, you must also submit a document known as the statement of qualification. This is a document which establishes the citizenship or residency of the buyer. You must submit this form with the bill of sale, and if there is more than one buyer, each new owner must complete and submit this form. If the documentation is not completed satisfactorily, the sale may not be held in the registry. This could be bad news for you in the future.
