New Boat Registrations

Federal law requires a hull number on all vessels manufactured in 1973 or later. The hull number must be given on the application. If the vessel has a “CT” number , that number stays with the vessel and must be entered on the application.

If a vessel has a US documented number or a Foreign Documented number then that vessel is not eligible to obtain a CT Title. You will receive a CT vessel registration using your documented numbers.

Vessels eligible for titles are vessels with a model year of 2017 and newer, or vessels that were previously documented either US or Foreign. Documentation from the Coast Guard is required to show that the Vessel was and is no longer documented.

The documents that will later be used to transfer or register a boat in Georgia from a private sale may vary, depending if the boat is already registered in Georgia, if the boat has a paper title issued, if the boat has been reported sold, and if the seller is the owner of record in the Georgia registration system. Boat and Motor Tax:

TPWD is required by law to collect tax for vessels/boats and outboard motors purchased in Texas or brought into Texas on or after January 1, 2000. The tax rate is 6.25% of the sales price. Tax is assessed at the time of registration/title transfer and is due within 45 working days from the date of sale or date brought to Texas. Applications filed later than 45 working days are subject to tax penalties and interest. A signed bill of sale or invoice is required for every transfer of ownership. Applying For Vessel Title For In

A vessel not exempt from titling must be titled at the same time it is registered. To issue a Florida Certificate of Title for a new or used vessel purchased in or outside of Florida, the owner of the vessel must bring the appropriate titling fee and the following documents into a tax collector or license plate agent office:

In the state of South Carolina, the law requires all motorized boats and watercraft, except exempted vessels, sailboats, and all outboard motors five horsepower and greater to be titled. By law we must have your completed application and other required documents, which vary by purchase or selling situation, to title and register your boat and/or motor.

If you are selling a boat and/or motor in South Carolina:

    Bill Of Sale For Boat

    A Bill of Sale for a boat must have adequate information to positively link the BOS to the boat, similar to the example WRD BOS.

    Owners of Georgia registered boats must notify the Department, in writing, of sale or transfer, theft or recovery, or destruction or abandonment of a boat within 15 days.

    The following should be on the BOS:

    • GA or Other State Registration Number

    • Hull Material
    • Sellers and Buyers Signature

    It is a judgment call whether WRD believes the BOS received is adequate to link the vessel to the BOS in a reasonably sufficient manner, or whether other documents such as a transferred title, a manufacturers statement of origin, or other information supports the submitted BOS. A BOS does not have to be witnessed OR notarized, although this is acceptable.

    If it is determined that a BOS is not available at all or is not adequate, the customer should obtain an adequate BOS. If a BOS cannot be obtained, the Affidavit of Vessel Ownership process may be completed.

    Using A Pleasure Craft Licence

    After you receive your Pleasure Craft Licence, you must use it as follows:

    • Carry the Pleasure Craft Licence on board the vessel at all times.
    • Display the number on both sides of your boat’s bow. The number must appear in block characters which are:
    • at least 7.5 centimetres high
    • in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow

    There is a $250 fine if you are found operating a vessel without a licence.

    Boat Licensing & Registration

    All pleasure craft powered by an engine of 10 horsepower or more are required to have a Pleasure Craft License issued by Transport Canada unless they have a vessel registration. The process to attain a new PCL, or to transfer one, is easy, can be done online or through the mail, and must be completed within 90 days of purchasing a boat. A PCL is free of charge and is good for ten years. If you move or any of your information changes during that time, you are responsible for updating your license information.

    You must display your PCL number on both sides of the bow of your boat above the water line and carry a copy of your card while onboard. There is a $250 fine if you are found operating a vessel without a license. You can apply to Transport Canada for a PCL.

    When a person dies, title to their property, including any vessels they owned, becomes vested in another person. A formal legal process guides this action. Legal documents may be available to show who gained ownership of a vessel from the estate, or who has legal authority, such as an Executor or Administrator of an estate, to dispose of a vessel.

    To transfer registration, the Department of Natural Resources must have a legal document reflecting the change in ownership of the vessel.
