Breaking Hulls Not The Bank

Today, the Navys fighters are not equipped to engage submarines, though they could be with aerial iterations of the Mk-54 lightweight torpedo or the Compact Rapid Attack Weapon torpedoes currently deployed by surface ships. However, adding new weapons to the standard carrier loadout wouldnt be optional, as space is constantly at a premium aboard ship and, of course, developing stuff can be pretty expensive.

But the group of Marine and Navy officers have an inexpensive solution that just might work:

The Navy could create an affordable and nearly unlimited antisubmarine smart weapon by transforming the humble depth charge. Following the basic configuration of Quickstrike air-dropped mines, this novel depth charge would use any Mk-80 series bomb, a high-drag ballute tail unit, and an underwater proximity fuse installed in the rear fuse well.

While these depth charges would be highly effective, the only extra gear the carrier would have to carry would be the underwater proximity fuses, which would take up very little space.

Finding The Subs May Be The Expensive Part

Grounded Hard!! | Boating News of the Week

One technology that is in dire need of revamping would be Americas Sonobuoys, or the buoy sensors deployed by patrol aircraft to detect the presence of nearby submarines. Because the Navys fighters dont have a great deal of loiter time to leverage, they would need to deploy buoys that can keep track of a submarine between sorties, and todays stationary platforms simply wont cut it.

Thats where the proposal calls for the deployment of both airborne and submersible drones, which could not only detect the presence of a submarine, they could follow it as it attempts to flee the area, keeping the carrier strike group and nearby ASW aircraft apprised of the submarines location even after the fighters depart.

Dubbed the photoacoustic airborne sonar system , these low-flying drones use lasers to vaporize water near the surface to generate underwater sound, which propagates like any other sonar ping, the article reads.

The UAV also carries an array of capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducers , which are sensitive enough to detect sonar returns across the water-air barrier.

How To Anchor Your Boat:

Step 1) Choose a safe area to anchor. Consider boat traffic, obstacles, wind and current.

Step 2) Ensure the inboard end of the anchor line is securely attached to the boat.

Step 3) Ensure the outboard end of the anchor line is securely attached to the anchor.

Step 4) Slowly lower the anchor over the bow until it reaches the waterway bottom. Note the distance to the bottom. Never throw the anchor over the side of the boat.

Step 5) Let the boat drift rearward or operate slowly in reverse to set the anchor.

Step 6) While the boat drifts, let out eight to ten times more anchor line than the depth of the water. This way, the rode will lie perfectly flat on the waterway bottom and pull the anchor in deeper.

Step 7) Once the anchor is set, choose two fixed landmarks on the horizon and occasionally check your relative position to ensure that your boat is not drifting. Remember, if youre anchoring at night, you must display your boats all-round white light.

Step 8) To retrieve the anchor, slowly pull on the anchor line and move the boat forward until the anchor frees itself from the bottom. Then bring the anchor onto the boat and place it in a safe, secure location before getting underway.

Who Needs A Pcoc

In Canada, anyone who operates a pleasure craft must carry proof of competency on board if the pleasure craft has any type of motor and is used for recreational purposes. This includes boats powered by trolling motors.

Proof of competency shows that a person has at least the basic level of boating knowledge that is necessary to operate a pleasure craft safely. The most common proof of competency is a PCOC that a boater receives after passing a Transport Canadaapproved boating safety course. The Canada PCOC is accepted as proof of competency in Ontario and all other provinces.

Casting Off From The Dock

Float on with these boat safety tips

Step 1) Make sure your passengers are properly seated with their hands and feet inside the boat.

Step 2) If your boat is equipped with enclosed engine compartments, operate the ventilation system for at least four minutes before starting the engine.

Step 3) Start the engine. If youre operating a personal watercraft, make sure that the kill switch is securely attached to your wrist or life jacket at all times.

Step 4) Check your surroundings for any obstacles or other boats.

Step 5) Untie the mooring lines and push your boat away from the dock:

  • As you leave the dock, the stern of your boat will likely swing back toward the dockpush your boat away from the dock at both the bow and stern.
  • Be careful if the wind is pushing your boat toward shore. You may need to operate in reverse, angling the stern away away from the dock before pulling away, to avoid colliding with the dock.

Step 6) Proceed slowly from the dock until its safe to increase your speed.

Step 7) Accelerate slowly. Rapid acceleration may cause passengers to lose their balance.

Americas Carriers Are Vulnerable To Submarine Attacks

Despite the long list of sensor advances since the end of World War II, submarines remain one of the most potent threats to Americas surface fleets. But unlike many other tactical threats America has managed to offset through new technology, the U.S. Navys ability to defend against submarine attacks has diminished in recent years, while nation-level opponent submarine capabilities have improved.

During the Cold War, the Navy relied on a sequential approach to tracking enemy submarine movements and, if necessary, engaging them. The process began with intelligence indicating a submarine was leaving port, followed by indications of the submarines movement via sonar arrays placed on the seafloor in chokepoints created naturally by the landscape. From there, it was up to patrol aircraft, usually S-3 Vikings, to track subs using specially designed equipment like sonar buoys, until an attack submarine, platforms that specialize in undersea warfare, was in place to tail the enemy boat.

But then the Navys primary fleet of AntiSubmarine Warfare patrol aircraft, made up of Lockheed S-3 Vikings, aged out of service by 2016, leaving that portion of the ASW sequence bereft of long-range airframes for the job. Today, land-based P-8A Poseidon aircraft or Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers pick up the slack left by the retired Vikings, but the Navy needs a carrier-based option.

Boating Safety Id Card Requirement

How To Get A Florida Boating Safety Id Card

After you have successfully completed an approved Florida boating safety course, please follow these steps:

  • Check with your course provider or instructor to see if they will automatically send a request to FWC to issue a card. Many online course providers, and some classroom providers, automatically submit a ID card request to FWC for all of their students who successfully complete an approved Florida course. If your course provider automatically sends a request to FWC for your card, you should receive that card within 2 to 3 weeks.
  • If the course provider or instructor is not going to submit the information for FWC to issue a card, you can do so using the course completion certificate you receive from the provider after you have passed the course. For online courses, make sure you can print a copy of this certificate from their website or that you can get an electronic copy. If you take a classroom course, make sure your instructor provides proof of completion. This proof can be a card or certificate, but in order for FWC to issue a boating safety ID card, the proof of completion must have the following information:
  • Name of the Course
  • Popular Articles
