Is Banana Boat Sunscreen Coral Reef Safe

Do I Need A Face Sunscreen

Hawaii Reef Safe Sunscreen Tips #shorts

Theres no reason a body sunscreen cant work on your face. Face sunscreens are often simply body sunscreens repackaged, according to cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski. But peoples faces are also wildly different in the way they react to different substances what is too greasy for one person may be fine for another.

If you dont want to spend the extra cash on a specific face lotion, keep in mind this one caveat to using our top body pick on your face: Water-resistant formulas contain more oil. Thats what makes them water resistant, Romanowski said. Face sunscreens tend to be formulated with less oil. We recommend several options in our guide to face sunscreens, but we wouldnt hesitate to use our top-pick body sunscreen on our faces for a beach day. No matter what you use, keep in mind that your level of protection depends on how much and how often you apply.

And if you wear makeup, dont count on foundation, powder, bronzer, or other cosmetics to fully protect your face. Sun-protective makeup might not be good enough for your daily routine, depending on what youre using and how much time you spend outside. Many cosmetics that advertise an SPF do not protect against UVA rays. That isnt a matter of false advertising its simply easy for you to miss the fact that they dont have the important broad spectrum label. Even if a certain cosmetic does have such labeling, it may not have a high enough SPF to meet AAD recommendations .

Why Is My Sunscreen Staining My Clothes

Sunscreen causing yellow stains on light-colored clothing is a common gripe. Nearly every chemical sunscreen for sale has the potential to cause staining, especially if you live in an area with hard water. A reaction between avobenzone and iron creates the stain, which is actually rust.

If you have trouble with sunscreen stains, consider wearing darker clothing to the beach, or switching to a mineral-based sunscreen. If you want to give up neither your white swimsuit nor your easy-to-apply sunscreen, Jolie Kerr, professional Clean Person, recommends a remover that can handle them, Carbona Stain Devils #9 Rust & Perspiration. Kerr also suggests going with a lotion sunscreen versus a spray oneits easier to avoid getting lotion on your clothing during application.

Red Rice Chinese Porridge Breakfast Bowl

In the West we like to eat oatmeal for breakfast. In the East, they prefer to eat rice porridge, also known as rice congee or congee. This recipe is inspired by my many days in Asia and is my version of Chinese rice porridge congee using red rice.

This warm breakfast bowl is a fantastic way to start the day in the cooler months, but it can also be a great energy boost in the summer, especially if you are in an air-conditioned room. It is also a good alternative to the sweet breakfast bowl options as it is usually topped with savory, even spicy, items

I decided to use red rice instead of the usual long-grain white rice because it is far more nutritious, and if you read below you will be convinced too.

But if you want to stick to the traditional version, feel free to use white rice, or whichever rice you have at home, just bear in mind that the consistency of the porridge and how goey and creamy it is will depend on the type of rice used.

Thanks to relying on the force of zinc oxide to fight off the UVAs and UVBs and leaving artificial fragrances, parabens, nanoparticles, and chemical sunscreens in some other guys lab, Uber scored the lowest hazard rating the Environmental Working Group hands out. Were also fans of the companys tinted Lady Face sticks. Theyre a triple threat: zinc SPF 40 sunscreen, softener and sheer foundation/primer that imparts a dewy look when used solo. A proposed class action claims certain Banana Boat sunscreens have been falsely advertised as Reef Friendly when they contain ingredients deemed to be harmful to coral reefs.

The 26-page case more specifically claims the Reef Friendly Banana Boat Sport Ultra sunscreens made by defendant Edgewell Personal Care Brands, LLC contain at least two active ingredients that are not safe for coral reefs and other marine life.

According to the suit, consumers would not have purchased the products, or would have paid significantly less for them, had they known the truth about the sunscreens ingredients.

The lawsuit explains that coral and the algae that live on its surface have a symbiotic relationship whereby the algae provide energy through photosynthesis and give the coral its vibrant colors. When coral reefs are exposed to pollutants, however, the coral may experience stress and expel the algae, thereby losing its color and turning white. This process, also known as bleaching, could cause the coral to die and is one reason coral reefs are endangered, according to the complaint.

The following Banana Boat sunscreens are specifically mentioned in the lawsuit:

Spread The Word And Advocate For Bans On Reef Harming Sunscreens

In addition to changing our actions and purchasing decisions to protect the marine environment, itâs also important to spread awareness about the issue to friends, family and community members. At the local level, ensure that your townâs stores are offering “reef friendly” sunscreen products, and encourage them to stop the sale of harmful products.

You can also advocate for local legislation that bans the sale and use of toxic sunscreens. For instance, in 2018, Hawaii passed the first ever statewide ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens, soon after, island nations including Palau, Bonaire and Aruba followed suite. Due to widespread community support, the Florida Keys were also able to pass an oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreen ban in Key West, but chemical companies have been working tirelessly to try and revoke this important legislation through the use of statewide preemption.

At the federal level, you can ask your federal representatives to support the first federal bill to ban oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens in National Marine Sanctuaries with coral reefs!

Banana Boat Sunscreens Contain Toxic Ingredients Despite Reef Friendly Claims

The Best Coral Reef Safe Mineral Sunscreen – Not Banned // Deep Water Happy

Condreay claims she purchased a Banana Boat SPF 30 sunscreen labeled Reef Friendly, from a Simi Valley CVS earlier this year, however, she says she would not have purchased the product or paid as much for it as she did had she known it was not actually Reef Friendly.

Avobenzone and octocrylene, ingredients in Banana Boat sunscreens, cause coral bleaching and negatively affect the reproduction of coral reefs, according to the class action lawsuit. Octocrylene specifically is toxic to the development and reproduction of marine life, says the plaintiff.

Condreay wants to represent herself and a California Class of consumers who purchased any of the above Banana Boat sunscreens that claim to be Reef Friendly.

By representing that the Products are Reef Friendly, Defendant leads consumers into reasonably believing that the Products contain only ingredients that are safe for coral and other marine life, states the class action lawsuit.

Condreay alleges the defendant intentionally is misleading a growing base of consumers who are more likely to purchase a product they believe is not going to harm the environment.

The plaintiff claims Edgewell Personal Care Brand is in violation of Californias Consumers Legal Remedies Act, False Advertising Law, and Unfair Competition Law.

Condreay is demanding a jury trial and seeking injunctive relief as well as statutory and monetary damages for herself and all Class Members.

The Hawaii Sunscreen Ban

Did you know that in July 2018, Hawaii became the first state to pass a bill banning sunscreens that include chemicals believed to be harming the beautiful coral reefs that many locals and travelers like you come to admire?

Studies have shown that sunscreens including oxybenzone and octinoxate cause mortality in developing coral increase coral bleaching that indicates extreme stress, even at temperatures below 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit and cause genetic damage to coral and other marine organisms.

These chemicals have also been shown to degrade corals resiliency and ability to adjust to climate change factors and inhibit the recruitment of new corals.Furthermore, oxybenzone and octinoxate appear to increase the probability of endocrine disruption.

Of course, Hawaii wants to keep the coral safe, so they prohibit the sale and distribution of sunscreens that have these ingredients that are damaging to the aquatic environment unless you have a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional.

NOTE: This is NOT a ban on sunscreens in general. Sunscreens are necessary for skin health by blocking UV rays known to cause skin cancer with overexposure. So whats a responsible tourist to do?

Tropicsport Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

Lastly, we recommend the TropicSport Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. This is free of avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate that harm corals. The TropicSport also passed the US FDA 80-minute test as well as Australias 240-minute water-resistance test.

As a broad-spectrum formula, TropicSport will shield you against UVA and UVB rays. It also passed EWG tested and recorded very low hazard ranking as compared to other sunscreens in the market.

Aside from protecting your skin, it also has nourishing benefits, thanks to aloe, green tea, shea, macadamia, and other fruit extracts.

We only noticed that it runs a little thick, but its something we can live with considering its reef-safe formula. Just let it sit for 20 minutes on your skin and youre good to go.

Lastly, we like to commend the bottle design that comes with a carabiner hole on top. With this, you can hook it to your scuba bag so you wont lose a bottle of sunscreen again.

All the brands found inthe right column of this page are considered reef-friendly,and are acceptable for use in the Mexican Caribbean,as well as anywhere else in the world, particularlynear the reefs.

Things to Consider:

1) Does your brand say biodegradableon the label? If not, then it’s probably not. Even if it is, it might not get past Xcaret or XelHa. The usual brands like Coppertone, BananaBoat, Panama Jack and No-AD are not biodegradable.

2) What is the active ingredientof your brand? Does it contain PABA? If so, then it’s really bad. Does it containchemicals like Octinoxate or Oxybenzone? Thosehave been shown to promote viral infection in coralreefs. If it is Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, then it is probably okay if it’s also biodegradableand doesn’t contain petroleum based oils.

How Much Sunscreen Should I Use

The Best Non-Toxic Sunscreen for Kids | REEF SAFE | MINERAL SUNSCREEN

To get the SPF listed on the bottle, you need to put 2 mg/cm2 on your skin. That means the average-size adult needs roughly a shot glasss worth of sunscreen for their mostly naked body . So, as you may have just concluded, you are almost certainly not using enough sunscreen. A 2014 study showed that people typically use a quarter to half as much sunscreen as they need to per application to meet the advertised SPF.

Spray sunscreens are trickier, as its hard to tell how much ends up on your skin, but if youre headed to the beach in a bikini or similar, weve found that spraying the sunscreen close to your body for roughly two minutes in a windlessbut well-ventilatedarea should do the trick.

Apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, since it takes that long for the formula to fully sink into your skin, and then again once every hour , plus every time after you work up a sweat or go in the water.

A note about water resistance: Some sunscreen makers claim their formulas are water resistant, but no sunscreen is waterproof or sweatproof. As such, you should never count on sunscreen to stick to your skin after youve gone for a swim or worked out, and you should definitely reapply after you do either of those things. Per FDA regulations, sunscreen can be labeled as water resistant for only up to 80 minutes, by which point you likely should have reapplied anyway.

If you know youre more likely to use a spray, Banana Boat Sport Performance Clear UltraMist Sunscreen SPF 100 is the easiest to apply liberally of the nine spray sunscreens we tested. Although most spray sunscreens feel similar, some testers reported liking the feel of the Sport Performance Clear UltraMist formula best for being less greasy than others, and rated its typical sunscreen scent just fine. Banana Boat Sport Performance Clear UltraMist is also less expensive than most other sprays we considered.

The downside of spray sunscreens is that they are quite a bit more expensive than lotions, especially when you consider that some of that spray never reaches your skin. If youre using a bottle of spray correctlythat is, youre applying and reapplying the recommended amount and rubbing it into your skinone person could use up an entire bottle in a single day at the beach.

The Banana Boat spray bottle itself was the best we tested. The nozzle produced a stream of mist that was less aerated and more concentrated than with many of the other sunscreens we tested, meaning more sunscreen should end up on your skin. The bottle has a groove near the top, so its easy to hold even when your hands are slippery.

The active ingredients are avobenzone , homosalate , octisalate , octocrylene , and oxybenzone .
