Where To Get Rid Of Old Boat

Where To Get Rid Of Your Boat:

The easy way to get rid of an old boat

Now that you have decided to get rid of your boat, you might be wondering where you should get rid of it.

Places where boating is more common often have more options. This is commonly near oceans and towns that have high amounts of water traffic.

Florida and California are two common places where people seek to get rid of their used junk boats.

Boat Salvage Yards Near Me

One of the best ways to save money on boat repairs is to find a boat salvage yard. A boat salvage is where wrecked boats are stored and dismantled. Working parts of the are sold for use on functioning boats. I will share with you my experience about the boat salvage yards near me and tips for getting the most value out of your trip visit.

Going Over Your Options Where Is The Title

First things first, we need to know what your situation is. Addressing what kind of situation you are in will dictate how you get rid of your boat.

Things like, how important is it to get rid of? Where is it? Is the boat in your yard causing you frustration, or is it at a storage facility costing you money? What kind of boat is it? Fiberglass, aluminum?

All of these things are important to consider. Aluminum boats are easy to recycle, where fiberglass boats have to be sent to the dump.

What kind of shape is the boat in? Is the hull in decent shape, or does the engine run? If the hull is decent and the engine runs, you probably arent to the point of trashing the boat and taking a total loss on it.

What does the trailer look like? Will it make 10 feet and the axle fall off or is it road worthy?

Beginning with this type of assessment is going to really put your situation in perspective so you will know where to begin in order to dispose of the boat properly. Possibly even getting some cash out of it and just getting rid of it!

One other thing that you want to think about, is that infamous title! The big question, where is that title? Is the title in your name? Is it a clean title?

Some Have Organized Rows While Others

While some boat salvage yards are a mess, many have the yard well organized which makes finding used boat parts much easier. In addition you may also want to ask if they have an online inventory of their boats by brand, type, and year. This can help you find the parts you need much faster. The boat junk yard will be able to tell you exactly where a specific boat is located on the lot and possibly if it has the part you are looking for. In most boat yards, like yacht junk yards the boats are arranged side by side.

Many yards have parts just thrown in other boats, like the one below. If you are looking for a part, you can sometimes check the boat next to it to see if it was thrown in.

Why Is Safe Disposal Of Old Flares So Important

Getting Rid Of Old Screw Holes In Fiberglass

Heres a story: in 1999 a Florida child found an expired flare in the backseat of a car. Predictably, it went off and injured six people.

Therefore, a better name for expired flares might be unexploded flares, since they are incendiary devices even past the expiration date. The chemicals in flares become unstable, not inert, with time.

Flares can be as dangerous as they are useful, and need to be treated with the appropriate care to avoid accidents and injury. Please dont forget that.

Stay safe, and enjoy the rest of your summer.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a burn accident in the San Diego area, contact the Elia Law Firm, APC for a free consultation. Burn injuries can range from minor to debilitating. You may deserve financial compensation if negligence by another party can be proven.

Take It To A Landfill

Unfortunately for most of the United States, the best and most common way of getting rid of a fiberglass boat would be to take it to a landfill. But they wont take it off of your hands just like that. Theyre interested in just the fiberglass part, so anything that isnt will have to be stripped away.

That entails getting rid of any hazardous fluids taken out. That also means youd have to remove all of its other parts like the engine, motor, and basically anything else that isnt made of fiberglass. Unless your local landfill has the capacity to process those as well, you might have to look into finding a suitable disposal method for those extra parts.

There are some people and organizations that will buy electronics taken from your boat at a very low cost. You can also check local boat shops that might be able to use them, since theyre almost always the only ones willing to buy these components off of boat owners hands.

Where Do Fiberglass Vessels Go When Theyre Past Their Useful Lives Until Recently The Landfill An Innovative Recycling Business Could Change All That

“Dead” fiberglass boats are finding new purpose as a fuel source for the cement industry.

When a southwest Florida law enforcement officer determines a boat is derelict or abandoned, that boat joins the ever-growing list on Justin McBride’s desk. Executive director of Florida’s West Coast Inland Navigation District , McBride checks his list of companies precertified to remove the derelict vessel, and a bid is placed. If the vessel is fiberglass, it’s hauled, towed, scrapped of valuable parts, and with no other options dumped in a landfill.

The cross-linked polyester and fiberglass composites of the fiberglass hull, ideal for strength and durability for a lifetime on the water, are not biodegradable and will sit in the landfill for centuries. “We’ve looked into recycling,” McBride says, but the local recycling facilities aren’t interested. It’s cost prohibitive.

American industry is also looking for a solution. Large marinas need to get rid of multiple dead boats manufacturers are trying to move toward zero-waste products and closing resource cycles. The car and airline industries are working toward fiberglass recycle during the design stage. Even individuals with old hulls on their property face challenges depending on size and situation, boat removal and disposal can cost upward of $10,000.

Evaluate Your Options First

If the marine vessel is water worthy, and only lacks an engine to power it along, it’s time to post an ad on the internet complete with plenty of pictures. Like yourself, there are probably enthusiast hobbyists that are looking for any project and yours might fit.

How long has that rotting hull been killing grass in your back yard? Has it been five years since you picked up that project whaler with the separated transom? Is your old boat causing you more stress than joy? Guess what. Its time to let go. — Boats.com

Conversely, if the engine is salvageable but the hall is not, do the same thing and put an ad on the web, either giving it away as a whole package, or, at least selling the engine for a nominal price.

How We Remove Boats

got rid of the old boat, cost me 51$, I guess that was better than hauling it home

For most boats we remove, the best way to haul it away is to winch it onto a rollback truck. This allows us to quickly load that old boat up, and be on our way. It is also the least expensive option as it only requires one truck.

The downside to winching boats onto a rollback truck is the maximum length for the boat & trailer combination can be no longer than 20 long.

Another option if the boat & trailer are roadworthy is to simply tow it away. We have salvage plates we will put on the trailer, and safely transport it back to our facility. A downside to doing this is if the trailer has been sitting for a while, the tires and wheel bearings may be unsafe for transport.

The final option for removing boats is unfortunately the most expensive. For large or otherwise un-movable boats, we will demolish them on-site. This involves us bringing out our excavator, rolloff dumpster truck, and dump trailer for metal recycling.

While the whole process of demolishing and removing a boat takes only 4 hours on average, it unfortunately costs more due to having to bring out multiple pieces of equipment.
