Not all vessels in Canada need to be registered, but if you have to licence your vessel as a pleasure craft, you may benefit from filling in the forms and registering your vessel instead. This is particularly true in specific circumstances, for example, if you are planning to sail the vessel outside of Canadian waters, or if you need to take out a lien or marine mortgage in order to pay for the vessel. In these cases, you will certainly have to register the vessel with the National Coast Guard. This offers more protection to you if you need to have it, and can also allow you to make sure that you get the most from being the owner of a registered Canadian vessel. You should check with BC officials if you are not certain about having to register the vessel.

How Do You Prove Ownership Of A Boat

When the manufacturer sells a new boat to a purchaser, usually a dealership, they give the purchaser a Manufacturers Statement of Origin or MSO.

The MSO is similar to a Title in that it proves ownership of the boat.

Now, when you purchase the boat from that dealer, they will sign over the MSO to you, and you will be the official owner of the vessel. You can now present the MSO to your local DMV to prove that youre the owner of the boat, and they will issue you a new registration number.

When purchasing a used boat, however, youll need to make sure the previous owner is, in fact, the real owner by verifying the boat registration and the Title.

Remember, the Title serves the same purpose as an MSO: it shows proof of ownership .

The process would be the same if you were to sell the vessel as well.

As long as you have the registration and Title to the vessel in your possession, thats all you need to prove youre the real owner.

Q: What Should I Do If I Am Buying Or Selling A Boat

A: In order to execute a boat transaction, the following items are necessary:

    • ;Bill of sale
    • ;12-character serial number pencil tracing
    • ;Proof of payment of Massachusetts’ sales tax
    • ;A completed application
    • ;Appropriate fees
    • ;Title from seller if applicable

Massachusetts sales tax is now payable online. For more information visit the Department of Revenue website or call 392-6089.

In addition to the previous requirements, if the boat is 14 feet or greater in length and uses a motor either temporarily or permanently, or if it is designed for use with a motor, the certificate of title must be signed over from the seller to the buyer. The buyer then presents this information and documentation to the Massachusetts Environmental Police Registration Bureau to obtain a new registration card and certificate of title.

    Boat Is Registered In Georgia

Seller should give the buyer a signed and detailed bill of sale and the Georgia boat registration card. The bill of sale must contain sufficient information to identify the boat, such as hull identification number, year, make, model, Georgia boat registration number, etc.

Buyer should obtain the detailed bill of sale and the sellers registration card. If the seller is not the owner of record on the Georgia registration card, the seller should also give the buyer copies of bills of sale that form a chain back to the owner of record to show the boat was legally transferred by the owner of record to each subsequent owner if these bills of sale are available.

The previous owners registration card should be retained by the buyer until their registration card is receivedafter their registration card is received we suggest the previous owners registration card be destroyed.

Certificate Of Title Or Manufacturers Statement Of Origin

    Boats previously registered in Wisconsin

Boats 16 feet in length or greater previously registered in Wisconsin are titled. The seller must provide you with the original Certificate of Title for you to transfer the boat into your name. The Certificate of Title must be signed; if the Certificate of Title lists more than one owner and the names are separated by the word and, all owners listed on the title must sign. If the word or separates the names, any of the owners listed on the title may sign.

Boats previously registered in another state

To register and title the boat, the DNR will need the original signed Certificate of Title if the boat is coming from a state that titles boats or a registration card if the boat is coming from a state that does not title boats.

    Boats never registered before

Applications to register new boats, or boats that have never been registered in any state, require the original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin to be submitted in lieu of Certificate of Title.

If this is a home-built boat, copies of the materials / supplies receipt should be submitted.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Boat Registered

How to install boat registration numbers and names

The process can be pretty quick as long as you have all the documents requested by the DMV.

How long you wait at the DMV is another story, though and thats not really up to you.

But, once you do submit everything to the DMV, they will process the information, and you should receive your registration numbers and validation sticker generally within a couple of weeks.

In other words, its a fairly simple process and shouldnt take much time at all.
