Beware of false assurances from city officials, scrambling to save face I dont expect the Central Park Boathouse to come back to life any time soon after the restaurant shuts its doors in October.
It is our intention to engage a future operator as soon as possible, Parks Department officials said on Friday, after current manager Dean J. Poll announced he was shutting things down.
Poll, the Long Island-born restaurateur notable for rescuing Gallaghers Steakhouse from closure back in 2013, blamed skyrocketing, inflation-driven food prices, combined with punishing labor costs.
But if the past is any guide, well be waiting an awfully long time for a table at the prettiest lakeside setting on earth.
The tormented history of another Central Park institution, Tavern on the Green, with Poll having backed out of a deal to reopen the then-dark landmark in 2010, suggests finding a new operator for the Boathouse could take until the Central Park sheep return.
A prolonged shutdown would be a tragedy for the park and for post-pandemic New York. Visiting friends from Seattle who had never seen it until recently were in awe of the settings beauty as I am on every visit.
Poll, who has run the Boathouse since 2000, had a deal in 2010 to reopen Tavern. But he walked away after the union blocked his plan to slash the number of employees.
The forced marriage seemed to work, but the bitterness never fully waned.
Central Park Boathouse Will Close Due To Rising Costs
Central Parks picturesque Loeb Boathouse, which has been featured in Sex and the City and movie thriller The Manchurian Candidate, is closing.
Dean J. Poll, owner of the restaurant and event space, filed paperwork with the city last week announcing his intention to shut down the business.
Due to rising labor and costs of goods, the business will be permanently closing effective 10/16/2022 affecting a total of 163 employees, Poll wrote in a notice filed with the states Department of Labor.
The restaurant is tucked away near the Central Park Lakes eastern shore and not accessible to the public by car.
The site is a premier venue for weddings and lakeside dining in the heart of Manhattan.
The restaurant temporarily shut down in October 2020 during the worst days of the pandemic. It reopened five months later with a celebratory Instagram post.

The high-end dinner menu includes miso glazed king oyster mushrooms at $36, pan seared halibut at $42 and cast-iron chicken with a truffle potato puree at $38.

In a notice filed with the New York State Department of Labor this month, owner Dean J. Poll formalized his plans to permanently close the establishment due to rising labor and costs of goods. All 163 employees will be laid off, and the business will shutter on Oct. 16.
Were actually in good faith negotiations with the Parks Department to see what we can do to get through this, Poll told The Post in regards to securing a new proprietor for the iconic haunt, which was constructed under the auspices of Robert Moses and opened to the public in 1954.
But, he added of the possibility a new proprietor will not be found, maybe not.
He further cited increased labor and insurance costs as the predominant economic hardship the business faced. Recently, these proved too much to overcome, despite the eaterys consistent popularity.
COVID has nothing to do with anything. The volume was there, Poll who took over the restaurant in 2000 told Patch. But the expenses just eat away at it.
An additional expense came from the fact that, in 2017, Poll signed a 15-year agreement with the city requiring him to either pay 7.2% of gross receipts or an approximately $1.7 million fee, Crains reported.
Despite its involvement, Parks is not involved in negotiations between the boathouse operator and its staff, who are represented by a union.

The views and ambiance are wonderful at the boathouse. The food is above average but nothing overtly spectacular. This is a great location for dinner in Central Park .
This review might be a bit biased since I was here for a work event but I had a lovely experience. I have never been to the boathouse before, out of all the times I’ve been to Central Park. It was a Tuesday afternoon at…around 3 pm and it was pretty crowded for such a weird hour. You should definitely try to sit outside if you can because that’s where you’ll get the best view of the lake and all the boats. The cocktails are pretty good and are a nice addition to the view.More

Central Park Boat House A Tourist Favorite To Permanently Close
The Central Park Boat House an iconic pavilion within the confines of one of Manhattans most famed tourist sites and home to a prominent eatery, bar and café is once again closing its doors.
Central Park Boat House filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the New York Department of Labor on July 15 announcing permanent layoffs of its 163 employees. It cited the rising costs of labor and goods as its reasons for closure, which will happen in October.
The site is home to a restaurant, a bar and a café, in addition to hosting private events.
Dean J. Poll, president of the Central Park Boat House, declined to confirm the certainty of the closure to Bisnow but said if it went ahead, the closure would affect all the Boat Houses food, beverage and entertainment offerings.
My only objective is to operate a restaurant at a profit, Poll said, adding insurance costs have risen in addition to the costs of labor and goods. Costs are rising faster than can be afforded by the facility.
Central Park Boat House also filed a WARN notice in October 2020 when it closed due to the pandemic, The City reported at the time. The business then entered into conversations with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation before reopening in March 2021, according to reporting from Gothamist, although Poll told Bisnow that NYC Parks didn’t play a role in keeping the business afloat.

Today is a sad day in New York: Patch reports that the iconic restaurant at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park will permanently close on October 16.
According to the outlet, owner Dean Poll filed a notice with the state, citing economic conditions as the reason for closure. Unfortunately, as explained in the notice, all 163 employees will be laid off by the fall.
“The Boathouse is a beloved place in the city of New York, for New Yorkers and tourists alikebut the current economic situation does not permit it to sustain itself,” Poll said to Patch. “I’ve been there for 21 years. The economics just don’t work anymore.”
Perhaps surprisingly, the owner made it a point to explain that COVID-19 didn’t play a significant role in his decision to shutter the business. “The volume was there but the expenses just eat away at it,” he explained.
The Loeb Boathouse has a long and storied history in New York. Named after investment banker Carl M. Loeb, who also funded its construction, the eatery opened back in 1954 and quickly rose to fame both within the city’s culinary scene and as a popular event location.
The restaurant was also featured in countless New York-based films and TV productions, including When Harry Met Sally, The Manchurian Candidate, 27 Dresses and Sex and the City .
The Iconic Nyc Restaurant And Attraction Will Close On Oct 16
The iconic Loeb Boathouse in Central Park will close this fall, marking the end of an era for the historic building beloved by both tourists and New Yorkers.
The boathouse, which has stood in its current form since the 1950s and offers visitors the chance to rent rowboats and enjoy a meal on the lake, will close for good on Oct. 16, The New York Times reported, citing a notice filed with the New York State Department of Labor.
“Due to rising labor and costs of goods, the business will be permanently closing,” the company wrote in the notice.
“It’s a very difficult place to operate,” Dean J. Poll, the operator, told the NYT. “It’s the location, the seasonality, access and expenses.”
The boathouse, which has been featured in several classic films like “When Harry Met Sally,” was first designed by Central Park landscape architect Calvert Vaux in 1872 as a two-story wooden Victorian building, according to the boathouse website. But the building itself 12 feet wide and 20 feet long at the time was later replaced by a rustic wood structure in 1924 and then eventually refurbished and reborn as the Loeb Boathouse in 1954.
While the boathouse is closing down, officials from the Department of Parks and Recreation told the NYT they plan to find a new operator “as soon as possible” and are trying to accommodate people who have scheduled corporate events or weddings there.
