Fresh Off the Boat had been picked up for a midseason launch. We had been shooting our 13-episode season that late summer into fall. Right after the holidays, we found out our airdate Feb. 4, 2015. A Wednesday night. The Promised Land of ABC comedy. We would get a magical taste of precious comedy scheduling real estate. But just for the premiere. Then we would be sent to Tuesday at 8 p.m. the slot recently vacated by Selfie and Manhattan Love Story. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune were our lead-ins with a couple of dramas behind us. Not precious comedy real estate. But by the time Fresh Off the Boat moved to Fridays a couple seasons ago, Tuesdays had become comedy real estate. Nahnatchka, Jake and I still joke that Fresh Off the Boat was the scheduling pioneer of Tuesday night on ABC. Looking back on this now in 2020, with the de-emphasis of same-day ratings and the emphasis of three- and seven-day delayed viewing on streamers, its easy to recognize that we lived through both an upheaval in ratings metrics and a dramatic change in viewership habits that was unimaginable when we sat down to dumplings at our first table read over a half-decade ago.

As I recalled these memories, I remembered a moment from early in my Hollywood career that reminds me of what making Fresh Off the Boat for the past six seasons means to me and why it was so important for us to get it on the air.

It would be great if ABC’s new sitcom succeeded, but it might be too much too soon. Can Fresh Off The Boat beat the odds?
Another January, another month of snow, sleetand a slate of new TV shows. So it was that on Jan. 15, the Television Critics Association gathered to interview the stars of the latest and greatest, with much buzz over the new ABC sitcom Fresh Off The Boat, about the coming-of-age of hipster chef Eddie Huang and his migrant family, which premiered Wednesday night. And rightly so: this was the first show to feature an all-Asian family since 1994s All-American Girl, the ill-fated show starring Margaret Cho, and intended, as part of its manifest, to strike out against racial stereotypes.
And so, of course, the days first question felt like a boulder being plunked into a pond.
I love the Asian culture, the first reporter stated, to slackened jaws. And I was just talking about the chopsticks, and I just love all that. Will I get to see that, or will it be more Americanized?
Then, of course, theres that chopsticks question that Fresh Off The Boats cast fielded on its media day, the kind of grotesque, impossibly outdated question that would make serious headlines if, say, someone had asked the cast of Black-ish whether the show would feature rapping. So despite all the shows good intentions, can Fresh Off The Boat shake the feeling that its doomed to be a noble failure, a footnote in a push thats moving all too slowly?

Louis and Jessica decide to sell the van and get a new one its more Jessicas idea than Louis. In fact, Louis doesnt want to give up the van, as it is filled with memories, literally and figuratively. Meanwhile, Eddie , Emery and Evan Huang start unpacking the van and find said memories. Eddie also mentions that he earned a 1500 on his SATs . The boys find a hand-drawn map that leads to a time capsule they buried in a park in Washington, DC before they moved to Orlando. As Louis mourns the loss of the van and Jessica wants him to get over it, the boys manage to sneak away on a road trip to DC to find out what exactly they put in the time capsule.
When the boys reach DC, Eddie gets sick from eating too many hot dogs, and Emery and Evan are forced to dig and find the time capsule without his help. They are irritated with their older bro, but when they find the time capsule, it is filled with Emerys rubber ducky, Eddies bag of farts, and a picture of their mom, which Evan put in there. They come to the realization that this was a trip that wasnt really a trip for the time capsule, but one last trip for the Huang brothers to bond before Eddie goes off to school.
At the end of part one of the finale, the Huangs finally make it to the Magic Kingdom and they have a new van the exact replica of Sheila.
The finale of Fresh Off the Boat may mark the end of an era, but it definitely has opened the door to many new ones.

Huang was born in , to Jessica and Louis Huang, who were immigrants from . They were both of Taiwan the of his father and mother were in the and provinces of , respectively. Huang was raised in Washington, D.C. but then moved to , where his father owned a successful group of steak and seafood restaurants, including Atlantic Bay Seafood and Grill and Cattleman’s Ranch Steakhouse. He appreciated culture, especially , at a young age. He also frequently got into fights, getting arrested twice on assault charges while growing up.
