How To Check If My Boat Is Registered

Identifying Details Of The Watercraft

The Boating Guy – Do I need to register my boat?

When you do a watercraft search on the PPSR, your search doesn’t return any identifying details of the watercraft, such as make, model or registration status like it does for a PPSR car search. This means you need to be careful when entering the serial number as you won’t be able to cross check the information to confirm you’ve searched for the right boat.

What Can Happen If The Boat Is Not Registered

In most cases, an unregistered boat cannot be legally operated in public waters. Period.

A boat without a registration number is like a car without a license plate: without one, local authorities have no way to know if the operator owns the vessel.

For all they know, the boat was stolen by the operator.

If the owner is caught navigating waters without a boat registration, theres no doubt that the local authorities will take strict action.

How Do I Get A Hull Identification Number

  • Boat owners should use every effort to determine if a boat has an existing HIN or resolve problems with a HIN for use in the registration process.
  • A HIN is required for boats manufactured after November 1, 1972. If the HIN is unavailable and unknown, the boat owner must first contact the boat manufacturer to obtain a replacement HIN .
  • If the HIN is known but the plate is missing or the HIN not inscribed on the boat, the boat owner is responsible for permanently affixing the HIN to the boat.
  • If the HIN is an improper format, the applicant will be asked to electronically upload or send a picture or pencil tracing of the HIN to DNR for verification and further instruction.
  • If the manufacturer is out of business or will not assist the boat owner, a DNR HIN Inspection is necessary. DNR will assign a HIN number after the inspection process and the boat owner is responsible for permanently affixing the HIN to the boat. Information on arranging an inspection can be found at;.

Registering Or Purchasing An Inherited Boat

When a person dies, title to their property, including any vessels they owned, becomes vested in another person. A formal legal process guides this action. Legal documents may be available to show who gained ownership of a vessel from the estate, or who has legal authority, such as an Executor or Administrator of an estate, to dispose of a vessel.

To transfer registration, the Department of Natural Resources must have a legal document reflecting the change in ownership of the vessel. We have past instances where we learn ownership of a vessel is in dispute. For example, someone may have sold a deceased’s vessel to a third party and others in the family or spouse claim the seller had no ownership claim to legally sell the vessel. Therefore, the person that sold the boat was not the owner and the buyer is unable to legally transfer registration.

Q: I Purchased My Boat From A Car Dealer

A: Car dealers that are not registered boat dealers must first title the boat in the car dealer’s name before legally selling the boat. The car dealer must also pay a sales tax to the Department of Revenue before titling the boat. Once the car dealer has applied for and received the title from the state, the sale can be made.

License Numbers For Your Pleasure Craft

2014 Skeeter Bass boat Lettering from Danny S, GA ...

At a minimum, licensing is required for pleasure craft in Canada if your boat has an engine that over ten horsepower and is not used for commercial purposes. If you fall into this category, you will want to complete the paperwork needed so you can license your vessel. You will be assigned a license number that you must then place on your boat according to the regulations put out by Transport Canada. The numbers must be at least three inches and in block lettering. They also must be placed on the hull of the ship on both sides so that they are as far forward as possible and visible above the waterline.

Certificate Of Title Or Manufacturers Statement Of Origin

Boats previously registered in Wisconsin

Boats 16 feet in length or greater previously registered in Wisconsin are titled. The seller must provide you with the original Certificate of Title for you to transfer the boat into your name. The Certificate of Title must be signed; if the Certificate of Title lists more than one owner and the names are separated by the word and, all owners listed on the title must sign. If the word or separates the names, any of the owners listed on the title may sign.

Boats previously registered in another state

To register and title the boat, the DNR will need the original signed Certificate of Title if the boat is coming from a state that titles boats or a registration card if the boat is coming from a state that does not title boats.

Boats never registered before

Applications to register new boats, or boats that have never been registered in any state, require the original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin to be submitted in lieu of Certificate of Title.

If this is a home-built boat, copies of the materials / supplies receipt should be submitted.

What Do The Registration Numbers Mean

Boat Registration Renewal

So your boat now has its new registration number and sticker, but what do these numbers mean?

Its important to note that sometimes youll see two different sets of numbers on a boat: the hull identification number and the registration number. Its important not to get these confused.

The HIN is the same as a car or trucks VIN and acts as a form of identification by the manufacturer. This will not have the validation sticker next to it.

The number that has a sticker next to it is the registration number, which is more important.

The registration number usually begins with your states abbreviation and is followed by a random set of numbers and letters.

For example, if you live in Florida, the registration number might look something like this:

  • FL 1234 YZ

Again, this serves as a license plate for the boat and shows that you have registered the vessel for use on approved waterways.

Bill Of Sale For Boat

A Bill of Sale for a boat must have adequate information to positively link the BOS to the boat, similar to the example WRD BOS.

Owners of Georgia registered boats must notify the Department, in writing, of sale or transfer, theft or recovery, or destruction or abandonment of a boat within 15 days.

The following should be on the BOS:

  • GA or Other State Registration Number
  • HIN #
  • Hull Material
  • Sellers and Buyers Signature

It is a judgment call whether WRD believes the BOS received is adequate to link the vessel to the BOS in a reasonably sufficient manner, or whether other documents such as a transferred title, a manufacturers statement of origin, or other information supports the submitted BOS. A BOS does not have to be witnessed OR notarized, although this is acceptable.

If it is determined that a BOS is not available at all or is not adequate, the customer should obtain an adequate BOS. If a BOS cannot be obtained, the Affidavit of Vessel Ownership process may be completed.

Hull Number Correction Information

The U.S. Coast Guard has mandated that all registered vessels in the State of Tennessee provide a properly formatted Hull Identification Number to TWRA.

The Hull Identification Number is a 12 character serial number that uniquely identifies a boat and is formatted according to US Coast Guard standards. The HIN is similar to the VIN on a car. Vessels manufactured or imported before 1973 are EXEMPT because they often do not have a HIN. All boats manufactured or imported after 1972, must have a HIN, and this HIN must be identified during the boat registration process. HIN numbers are typically located:

  • On sport and fishing boats, they can be found on the back right outside corner.
  • On pontoons, they can be found on the right side of the frame above the pontoon, but below the deck.
  • On personal watercraft, they can be found under the seat as well as on the lip of the footrest.

If you are unable to locate the HIN number in any of these locations, photos of these areas of the vessel will be required.

Customers with an invalid HIN may renew their boats but within the next three years, our system may decline these renewals and any new owner applications in order to comply with the Agencys Coast Guard deadline.

It is imperative to correct these numbers in the system before that deadline.

How Do You Check A Boat Registration Number

It is important to check the boat’s documentation before purchasing a previously owned boat or watercraft. The U.S. Coast Guard and some states, such as South Carolina, allow potential buyers of used boats to check the boat’s status by using the registration number and the other data of the vessel:

  • Visit your state’s department of natural resources watercraft buyer’s guide
  • Navigate to the registration and titling information, and check if there is a boat buyer’s guide or an option to check the status of a boat on the page. If there is, provide the information requested, such as the registration number or the motor number. A check on the registration number of the boat can provide details such as the state where the boat is currently registered and damage reports.

  • Check the vessel’s documentation by name

Access the USCG vessel database if you have the name of the boat and if the registration number is missing or cannot be located. Visit the Office of Science and Technology on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association website, and navigate to the vessel documentation page. Input the name of the vessel, and find it on the list. It should be noted that the USCG only retrieves data from five net tons or larger vessels.
