Captain Rob Copenhaver is the new owner of the 24-hour on-the-water boater assistance service, TowBoatUS Ocean City, MD. Copenhaver was most recently operations manager, helping to grow the local boat towing companys footprint last July by adding a second location: TowBoatUS Chincoteague, VA. Hes taking over the helm after the passing of former owner Captain Greg Hall, who started TowBoatUS Ocean City in 1986. Today, the location is one of the longest-running towing ports in the nationwide fleet of more than 600 response vessels at 300-plus TowBoatUS locations.
Copenhavers tenure with the company began shortly after he graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 2004 when he did marine-construction work for Hall. He then spent six years gaining experience as a towing response vessel captain for TowBoatUS Marco Island, FL. He rejoined Hall at TowBoatUS Ocean City seven years ago and has since logged hundreds of hours and miles of towing disabled vessels, providing battery jumps, and providing soft-ungrounding services, steadily growing his responsibilities to eventually manage day-to-day operations.

How To Determine The Actual Weight Of A Boat
All the little things like life vests, coolers, boards, fishing gear, batteries, speakers, people, etc really start to add up and increase the boats weight a lot. Keep these little things in mind as you are towing the boat.
I cant give you a formula that will determine every boats exact weight because every boat and boat owner is different. Some people have more accessories than others. Some boaters prefer to bring more people, or fishing equipment, or water toys along for the ride and that adds a lot of weight.
I can, however, give you the weights of things that people usually have in their boats and a rough estimate of how much extra weight one can expect to have.
Here is a list of items with their estimated weights that you will need to add to the boats dry weight. These will all provide the most accurate number to know if a vehicle can tow the boat or not.
- Trailer 1,000-1,600 lbs
- Tower 70-300 lbs
- Stereo 50-250 lbs
- Gear 100-500 lbs
- Fuel 240-450 lbs
- Options 50-450 lbs
An extra 1,500-2,200 lbs could be potentially added to the weight of your boat. Keep in mind that these numbers are a rough estimate, but should give you a good idea on how much certain things can impact your boats weight and ability to be towed.
Some of the items on this list might not even be an issue for some boats, while other items might be taken into even more consideration.

It started in the pre-dawn hours of the morning with a call to go 40 miles offshore to tow a 62-foot sport-fishing vessel that had been fishing and ran out of diesel fuel. It was a relatively fast ride out on his franchise-owned 266 World Cat towboat, powered with dual 200HP four-stroke Yamaha outboards. But the tow back at about 5 knots took hours. The rest of the day was very slow doing maintenance and cleaning the boat, until what he calls the witching hour at about 4 p.m. That is when all the boats out at the beaches, sandbars or fishing the inshore and outside waters start heading back to port. The radio, texts and emails started flooding in, and he went from sitting for hours to running from one tow to the next until late into the evening.

It is essential to remember to only use vehicles to tow boats and weights that fall under their tow rating as it can be extremely hard on the vehicles mechanics if it tows more than it is supposed to.
Here are some examples of common trucks and SUVs with their respective towing capacities. I also included which types of boats they can tow from my list.

Most trucks can tow up to 10,000 lbs without any struggle. Most of the smaller and mid-sized ones only tow about 5,000-8,000 lbs worth of weight, while the bigger heavy duty trucks tow anywhere between 12,000-20,000 lbs.
If you get a heavier duty truck or even a large SUV, you should be good to go with just about any type of boat you could want. These larger vehicles are almost always equipt with a strong V8 engine that allows them to pull insane amounts of weight.
SUVs obviously dont have anywhere near the power that trucks have, but they can still tow to some extent. Depending on the SUV they can tow 3000-5000 lbs. Some of the newer SUVs are known to tow up to 9,000 lbs. When thinking about towing with an SUV be sure to do your research to make sure the car and its engine can handle the load.
