Is Boat Insurance Mandatory In Florida

What To Look For In A Policy

5 Things to Know about Boat Insurance

Its best to work with an agent as youll have many policy options. You can choose an Agreed Value policy which pays for a replacement of a boat of the same kind and quality. Alternatively, a Stated Value policy compensates you for the value of your boat up to the policy limit, less depreciation.

Boat policies are either named perils or all perils policies. All perils policies protect you against all risks, unless theyre specifically excluded in the policy. However, you may need to take risk mitigation measures such as providing them with a hurricane plan if you want them to include wind coverage in hurricane-prone Florida.

A named perils policy typically protects you from risks such as theft, vandalism, lightning, fire, grounding, sinking, and lost or stolen belongings. Generally, your policy can provide the following coverages:

  • Personal property or vessel damage sustained on the water or trailer, less the deductible
  • Liability coverage for damages to others
  • Medical payments coverage for you and your guests after an injury
  • Uninsured boaters coverage for property damage or injuries caused by an uninsured boater
  • Towing coverage

A boat insurance policy limits the navigational territory. If youre traveling outside of your insured territory, you may need a policy endorsement.

Boat Insurance In Florida

Boat insurance isn’t mandatory in Florida, meaning it’s not required by law to own or operate a vessel. However, if you took out a loan using your boat as collateral, the lender will typically require that you have insurance to cover damages to the boat. And Florida marinas often have boat insurance requirements, so you’ll need to provide proof of liability coverage in case of injury or damages to others.

Even when it’s not required, if you own a motorized boat in Florida or one that costs over $1,000, we recommend you consider boat insurance. Many homeowners insurance policies offer limited coverage for boats and watercraft:

  • Coverage for damages to the vessel is generally limited to around $1,000 and only applies to certain causes of damage.
  • Your homeowners liability insurance may offer some assistance if you caused bodily injury or property damage to others, but there are often restrictions depending on the type of boat.
  • Personal property that you bring on the boat may be covered if it’s lost or damaged, but not if its use is exclusive to the boat.

A boat insurance policy can provide coverage for:

What Are The Deductibles

All insurance policies have physical damage deductibles that may either be a specific dollar value or a percentage of the value of your yacht. Also, depending on what kind of vessel you have, a separate deductible may be applied.

Additionally, check if the insurance policy of your ship includes a named storm or hurricane deductible. The state of Florida has a high risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. Insurance companies usually add this deductible, which can go as high as 10% of the value of your vessel.

Alabama Boat Insurance Coverage Options

Is Florida Boat Insurance Required?

If you understand how your vessel is protected, you can better understand the risks that can affect your policy. Although it may vary a bit by company, boat insurance in Alabama can generally be divided into two categories: liability protection and physical damage protection. Both together can be considered comprehensive boat insurance.

Liability Coverage

For boaters, liability insurance covers damages you may cause in accidents. If you collide with someone, your boat liability policy can cover the medical expenses and property damage youre at fault for.

Many liability policies also include coverage for fuel spills. If your boat discharges oil or fuel after an accident, the damage it causes may be covered by your insurer. Wreckage removal may also be included in your policy, which allows your insurer to help cover the costs of raising or removing your wreckage after an accident. Check the specifics of your plan for when these coverages may come into play.

You can usually purchase liability limits in increments of hundreds of thousands of dollars with many insurers capping out at $1 million in coverage. But, you may be able to get more depending on your carrier, or you may need a sort of umbrella policy.

What Is Boat Insurance

Boat insurance covers you in the event of a loss or damage to your boat. It covers most watercrafts with motors, including fishing boats, pontoon boats, paddle boats, leisure crafts and yachts. Boat insurance does not usually cover canoes, kayaks or personal watercrafts .

For small watercrafts, you may find some limited coverage under your homeowners policy. You may also be able to add a special endorsement or buy separate coverage. Contact an independent agent for assistance with all of your boat coverage.

Is Boat Insurance Mandatory In Florida

How To Get A Boat Legal In FloridaThere is no state law that requires any Florida boater to buy boat insurance, but if you do not own your boat free and clear, your lender is likely to require boat insurance as part of the financing contract. And if you keep your boat at a marina, the marina may require you protect it with boat insurance.

All boats in Florida have to be registered and titled with the state, unless the vessel is less than 16 feet long and has no motor. Thus, some small sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and rowboats are excluded from this requirement. And you dont have to show proof of insurance to register and title a vessel like you do with an automobile.

Additionally, you will be required to pass a safety course and get a boating safety ID card and to carry life vests and some other safety equipment on your boat when in use.

Why It Makes Sense To Carry Boat InsuranceLack of legal necessity aside, it only makes sense to protect yourself, your passengers, and your vessel with boat insurance if you plan to ply Floridian waters. The very popularity of Floridas lakes, rivers, canals, and shorelines increases the odds of an accident, and the frequency of storms and hurricanes also is a major risk. And even if you dont get caught out in a storm, your boat could get damaged at the dock.
