Is Banana Boat Sunscreen Safe For Face

Protection You Can Trust

Banana Boat Sunscreen Lotion Review | Best Sunscreen Ever??

Weve been protecting fun under the sun for 40 years and counting. Our dedication to safety and high-quality sunscreen means guaranteed fun-in-the sun protection that you can trust every day. Whether spray, lotion or stick, our easy-to-apply products are designed with one idea in mind: to help you and your family enjoy every moment outdoors.

How Much Sunscreen Should I Use

To get the SPF listed on the bottle, you need to put 2 mg/cm2 on your skin. That means the average-size adult needs roughly a shot glasss worth of sunscreen for their mostly naked body . So, as you may have just concluded, you are almost certainly not using enough sunscreen. A 2014 study showed that people typically use a quarter to half as much sunscreen as they need to per application to meet the advertised SPF.

Spray sunscreens are trickier, as its hard to tell how much ends up on your skin, but if youre headed to the beach in a bikini or similar, weve found that spraying the sunscreen close to your body for roughly two minutes in a windlessbut well-ventilatedarea should do the trick.

Apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, since it takes that long for the formula to fully sink into your skin, and then again once every hour , plus every time after you work up a sweat or go in the water.

A note about water resistance: Some sunscreen makers claim their formulas are water resistant, but no sunscreen is waterproof or sweatproof. As such, you should never count on sunscreen to stick to your skin after youve gone for a swim or worked out, and you should definitely reapply after you do either of those things. Per FDA regulations, sunscreen can be labeled as water resistant for only up to 80 minutes, by which point you likely should have reapplied anyway.

Best Practices For Sun Protection

While finding the perfect sunscreen that has broad-spectrum coverage and an SPF of at least 30 is critical to protecting yourself from the sun, many experts we talked to also made sure to point out that avoiding sun damage doesnt end with a good sunscreen.

While sunscreen is an important part of a sun protection strategy, it is not our only protection, says Richard. Remember that clothing, shade structures, sunglasses are all additional measures to use when protecting your skin from UV rays. And Amanda Turney, a press officer at the FDA, encourages consumers to limit time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the suns rays are most intense.

Benzene In Sunscreens What You Need To Know

A May 2021 report from Valisure, an advocacy-focused online pharmacy that tests prescription drugs and over-the-counter products, raised alarm about the presence of benzene, a known carcinogen, in dozens of batches of commercially available sunscreens and after-sun skin-care products. Experts we spoke with acknowledged that the labs findings, while preliminary and not independently confirmed, are worthy of concern. We know that benzene can cause leukemia and other types of cancers, and the high levels detected in all these sunscreens is concerning and surprising, said Luoping Zhang, an adjunct professor of toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley. There is probably no safe level of benzene anywhere or in anything.

Valisure requested a recall of the contaminated batches” and that the “FDA better define limits for benzene contamination in drug and cosmetic products.

While the company did not test samples of all of the sunscreens we recommend in this guide, among those it did test, none were found to contain benzene. The Valisure study is a whistleblower event that helps things change and regulations to happen, said Akshay Talati, an independent cosmetic chemist who has worked with a variety of cosmetics companies, most recently LOreal.

An FDA spokesperson told Reuters that the agency will continue to monitor the sunscreen marketplace and manufacturing efforts to help ensure the availability ofsafe sunscreens for U.S. consumers.

Other Sunscreens We Like

Chemical sunscreens

If our top pick is not available, we like Banana Boat Light As Air SPF 50 Lotion . Its easy to find in stores, odorless, goes on smoothly, and is about the same price per ounce as Coppertone Ultra Guard Sunscreen Lotion SPF 70.

Physical sunscreens

We like Hello Bello Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 and Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 30 Sunscreen as lower-cost alternatives to the reef-safe Thinksport SPF 50+ we recommend. Compared with the Thinksport, weve found that the Hello Bello formula is more strongly scented. It has the same active ingredient as Thinksport for around half the cost. The Blue Lizard sunscreen contains both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and is more difficult to fully rub in compared with both the Thinksport and Hello Bello sunscreens.

If you prefer a physical-only spray sunscreen, we like Coppertones Pure & Simple SPF 50 Spray as a solid and cost-effective choice with no added fragrance. As with all spray sunscreens, you still need to rub this formula into the skin for maximum protection.

Combination sunscreens

CVS Health Clear Zinc Sun Lotion SPF 50 is a solid choice if youre specifically looking for a sunscreen that wont stain white clothing. You should note that, despite this sunscreens name, it does not appear colorless on all skin tones.

Carcinogen Found In Some Popular Sunscreens And After

Traces of a chemical tied to blood cancers including leukemia have been detected in dozens of popular sunscreens and after-sun products, according to tests conducted by online pharmacy and lab Valisure.

Benzene, a known carcinogen, was found in 78 of nearly 300 sprays and lotions tested about 27% including products sold by Banana Boat and CVS, according to Valisure.

In a petition, the company has asked the FDA to recall these contaminated batches. The regulating body is reviewing the claim.

“The FDA takes seriously any safety concerns raised about products we regulate, including sunscreen,” the FDA told CBS News in a statement.

Sunscreens and after-sun, classified as cosmetics, are generally subject to FDA regulation.

The chemical is identified as “a colorless or light-yellow liquid chemical at room temperature.” Valisure states that it’s been used “primarily as a solvent in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.”

Trace levels of benzene can be found in cigarette smoke, gasoline, glues, adhesives, cleaning products and paint strippers.

All of the samples tested have “contained up to three times the conditionally restricted FDA concentration limit of 2 parts per million” of benzene, according to Valisure’s website.

He is also urging the FDA to better define its standards for contamination, and “address current regulatory gaps regarding benzene in both drug and cosmetic products.”

    What To Look Out For

    Sprays vs. Lotions

While popular for their lack of mess, alcohol-based aerosol sunscreens are much thinner than lotions and can evaporate more easily, leaving skin exposed. Even the sprays which require rubbing in will leave a much thinner layer than applying lotion straight from the bottle.

    Chemicals

Sunscreens can also contain chemicals which are harmful to the lungs if inhaled, making sprays the must-avoid product if around kids. Chemicals such as oxybenzone act as an allergen, affecting the regulation of hormones and can be penetrated through the skin. Another harmful chemical is retinyl palmitate which may speed up the development of skin lesions and tumors when applied in sunlight, according to government studies. There are other alternatives you can use such as mineral-based sunscreens.

    Allergies

For those with allergies to certain products, sunscreen can leave them with an irritating skin reaction. Those with sensitive skin should monitor for reactions for a few days after using a product, with symptoms including itchy skin, rashes and even blistering. Sunscreens are usually one of two types chemical or physical blocks. You may find switching to a different type helps and, there are products out there for sensitive skin.

Editors’ note, July 14, 2021: Neutrogena has voluntarily recalled select spray sunscreens, including the Neutrogena Beach Defense spray previously featured here. Some sunscreens, including those from Neutrogena, were found to have benzene in a third-party lab test. If you have this product, or one of other recalled varieties listed here, Neutrogena recommends you dispose of it and contact the company for a refund.

Summer’s in full swing — is your sunscreen ready? If you can’t remember when you bought your last bottle, it’s time to toss it and get something new that will protect you from the sun’s rays and save your skin from a sunburn.

Approximately 40% of Americans rarely or never wear sunscreen, according to a recent survey of more than 2,000 people. That’s pretty awful considering all of the ways the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can harm your skin — including sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and sagging. And the sun can even make your tattoos fade. Everyone should use sun protection and wear sunscreen, regardless of your skin tone or skin type, because even if you have darker skin, anyone can get skin cancer.

Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen Spf 50 Review

    Ingredients:

My Experience with Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen SPF 50:

My Lotus Herbals Sunblock got over on the first day of our Bali Trip. So I rushed to the nearby grocery store to pick up a sunscreen. I saw Banana Boat Sport Sunscreens on the counter there. A quick search on IMBB and I found a very good review of Banana Boat Sunscreen SPF 30 version.I picked up the SPF 50 version instantly. Plus the claims were very good SPF 5- UVB 50 PA +++, UVA water and sweat resistant, non greasy and quick absorption. UVA protects the sun rays from penetrating though your skin and protect you from sun burns. UVB protects you from getting tanned.

Anyway, I am heads over heels in love with this sunscreen.

    • does not made me sweaty. But I feel that would depend from person to person. Most sunscreens dont make me sweaty.
    • protected me and Sanjeev A LOT from getting tanned. We still got tanned but considering how harsh the sun was in Bali, we could have come back toasted and roasted.
    • we did not get any sun burns or skin allergies.
    • gets absorbed quickly without leaving any whitish cast behind.
    • has a thin texture that is easier to use.
    • be careful not to get it in your eyes. It stings BAD!
    • has a perfumey fragrance but its not bothersome.
    • is waterproof.
    • comes in an easy squeeze tube. very easy to carry around.
    • approved by Skin Cancer Institute.

Overall, a very good sunscreen. And a must pick for beachy destinations.

Best Overall Sunscreen: Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Sunscreen Spray

The Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Sunscreen Spray achieved a perfect score in nearly every single one of our tests. Its spray function made it extremely easy to apply, and it has a wide and even distribution, making it easy to quickly cover your entire body with a swift pass it clocked in with the fastest full-body application for the testers who tried it out.

The spray disappeared nearly immediately into the skin and didnt leave any lingering color or sheen. It felt a little wet at first but soon absorbed, and we completely forgot wed even applied it. The sprays tropical smell of coconut was pleasant, though it has a hint of chemicals and is quite strong overall, which could deter people with more sensitive senses of smell.

In addition to being a quick and easy sunscreen to apply, the Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Sunscreen comes in a slim container that barely takes up any room in a bag, plus it can easily fit in a standard water bottle pouch on the side of a backpack. The cap twists into a lock position, so wherever you store it, you can be sure it wont leak or soak any of your belongings.

Best Mineral Sunscreen: Coppertone Pure & Simple Sunscreen Lotion

If you want to be extra safe and completely avoid chemical active ingredients, a mineral sunscreen is the way to go, according to the experts we spoke to. While this variety is generally thicker and harder to rub in than a chemical sunscreen, out of all the mineral options we tested, the Coppertone Pure & Simple Sunscreen Lotion stood out above the rest.

Albas Botanica Fragrance Free Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen fell short of our best mineral sunscreen spot because it was harder to rub in than the Coppertone, but the Alba mineral sunscreen does come in a spray bottle, which might be a plus for some.

The Coppertone formula is an SPF 50, broad-spectrum lotion with only one active ingredient: zinc oxide. The Coppertone excelled in tests where mineral options normally fell short, namely in ease of application and sunscreen visibility. The lotion itself is thin enough that it applies smoothly to the skin. However, like all mineral sunscreens we tested, it took a while to sink in. One of our testers saw a slight but noticeable white cast on her skin after applying, while another said it took some rubbing but most of the chalkiness and color eventually disappeared.

This sunscreen didnt have much of a smell, though our testers did pick up a slight chalky, mineral scent. The Coppertone felt gentle on the skin, with no issues or irritation, which makes it a go-to option for anyone with sensitive skin, including children.

Sunscreen Chemicals Build Up In Your Blood

Affordable Mineral Sunscreen Review | Blue Lizard, Sun Bum Face, Banana Boat, Coppertone

The effects of sunscreen may linger longer than expected, too. An FDA-led 2020 studyfound that chemical sunscreen ingredients are systemically absorbed after one application, and some ingredients can stay in the blood for at least three weeks.

The sunscreen chemicals tested include avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate and octinoxate, and all six active ingredients tested readily absorbed into the bloodstream of humans in the study and at concentrations that surpass an important FDA safety threshold.

This builds onprevious research showing that sunscreen chemicals hit the bloodstream within a day of using them and at levels high enough to prompt a government investigation on safety.

We slather these ingredients on our skin, but these chemicals havent been adequately tested, Leiba says. This is just one example of the backward nature of product regulation in the U.S.

Beyond safety issues is another question: Does sunscreen even work? Environmental Working Groups found that nearly 75 percent of sunscreens dont work and/or contain concerning ingredients that are readily absorbed by the body.

Things may be slowing moving in the right direction, but for now, the onus is still on the consumer to find sunscreen thats safer and actually works.
