Proof Of Vessel Acquisition
You need to demonstrate your entitlement to register a vessel. To do this, you’ll need a copy of a receipt, bill of sale or consignment note that includes the following details:
- full name and signature of the seller
- full name and address of the buyer
- date of sale and the words ‘received payment in full’, or similar
- HIN/Boatcode number and a full description of the vessel.
If your receipt, bill of sale or consignment note doesn’t include all essential requirements, you’ll need to provide another receipt or Statutory Declaration detailing this information.
How To Register A New Boat/vessel
To register your new boat, submit your application in person at a DoT Driver and Vehicle Service Centre, Regional Centre or at a Regional Authorised Agent. Make sure you take the following documents with you:
- New boat registration form .
- Proof of acquisition, this may include any of the following.
- Bill of sale.
- Detailed receipt.
- Consignment note.
- Offer to purchase or any document that provides evidence of ownership. For example: a statutory declaration.
You will also be required to pay a registration fee as well as annual fees.
Purchases of boats with expired registrations will be treated as transfers rather than new boat registrations.

Tax And Bill Of Sale Requirements
Boat and Motor Tax:
TPWD is required by law to collect tax for vessels/boats and outboard motors purchased in Texas or brought into Texas on or after January 1, 2000. The tax rate is 6.25% of the sales price. Tax is assessed at the time of registration/title transfer and is due within 45 working days from the date of sale or date brought to Texas. Applications filed later than 45 working days are subject to tax penalties and interest. A signed bill of sale or invoice is required for every transfer of ownership. Trailers are handled through your local County Tax office and the price of the trailer must be separated from the price of the vessel/boat and motor. One of the following is acceptable to meet the bill of sale or invoice requirement:
- Form PWD 143/144 application – sales price , date of sale, and trade-in information must be completed and signed by the seller.
- Handwritten Receipt or Sales Invoice – must contain date of sale, sales price , description of vessel/boat and/or outboard motor , purchasers name, and seller’s signature.
- Back of TPWD title completed with sales price, the name of the purchaser and signature of the owner listed on the front of the title or from their legally documented representative. .
New Resident Tax – $15.00. New Resident tax is assessed for owners who previously resided in another state who are bringing their previously titled or registered boat and/or outboard motor from that other state into Texas.
Applying For Vessel Title For In
A vessel not exempt from titling must be titled at the same time it is registered. To issue a Florida Certificate of Title for a new or used vessel purchased in or outside of Florida, the owner of the vessel must bring the appropriate titling fee and the following documents into a tax collector or license plate agent office:
New vessel Manufacturers Certificate of Origin or its equivalent statement of builder, or if the vessel is purchased in a state that does not require an MCO, the proof of ownership is an executed dealers bill of sale. The proof of ownership must include a complete description of the vessel, including manufacturers name, year, type, hull material, propulsion, fuel, use of vessel, hull identification number and length.
Used vessel currently titled in FL Florida title accurately completed for transfer to purchaser.
Used vessel currently titled out of state Out-of-state title accurately completed for transfer to purchaser.
Used vessel from a state that does not require title Current registration from that state and a bill of sale from the current registrant. Bill of sale must include complete description of the vessel including manufacturers name, year, type, hull material, propulsion, fuel, use of vessel, hull identification number and length.

Renewals can be done online. You may also renew instantly by going to any business that sells TWRA hunting and fishing licenses or any of the TWRA Regional Offices in Jackson, Nashville, Crossville, or Morristown. You must have the boat registration TN number and the license agent will ask for your last name, date of birth, and last 4 of your SSN. You will receive a temporary registration which will allow you to operate your boat until your new decals and registration card arrive by mail, in about 2 weeks.

What If Your Registration Has Expired
Dont drive the vessel until its registered. Operating an unregistered vessel is an offence with heavy penalties.
If the registration is not renewed by the expiry date, a reminder notice is issued between 15 and 21 days of the expiry.
If your vessel registration expired more than 90 days ago, you can renew it in person, by mail or by phone. There are no late renewals online.

What Is A Hull Identification Number
The Hull Identification Number is a 12 or 14 character serial number that uniquely identifies a boat. The HIN is analogous to a VIN on a car. All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972, must bear a HIN, and this HIN must be identified during the boat registration process. Vessels manufactured or imported before 1972 are EXEMPT because they often do not have a HIN.
The HIN is found on a metal or plastic plate, typically on the transom of the boat, usually on the right starboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. On vessels without transoms, or impractical to use transoms, the HIN is usually affixed to the starboard outboard side of hull, aft, within one foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. On catamarans and pontoon boats with replaceable hulls, the HIN is usually affixed to the aft crossbeam, within one foot of the starboard hull attachment.
Vessel Titling And Registrations
All motorized vessels operating on Floridas public waterways must be titled and registered. Chapter 328, Florida Statutes, designates that FLHSMV is responsible for issuing vessel registrations and titles. Applications for titles and registrations must be filed at a county tax collector or license plate agent office. Owners have the option of registering their vessel for either one year or two years.
A purchaser of a new or used vessel has 30 days to title and register that vessel. During this 30 day period, the owner must have proof of the date of purchase aboard the vessel. Operating an unregistered vessel after 30 days is a second-degree misdemeanor.

From Registration To Ownership

Boat Is Registered In Georgia

Which Boats And Personal Watercraft Must Be Registered
The following vessels must be registered to occupy NSW navigable waters:
- power-driven vessels with an engine power rating of 4.0 kilowatts or more
- any power-driven or sailing vessel of 5.5 metres or longer
- every vessel subject to a mooring licence
- personal watercraft
Registration is granted on an annual basis.
Registering Your Boat In Ohio
Registrations are required for every recreational boat in Ohio, including powerboats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and inflatable boats. NOTE: Kiteboards, paddleboards, and belly boats do NOT have to be registered as boats in Ohio.
