As for how the jack attaches to your trailer, there are two styles, bolt-on and weld-on. West Marine does not currently offer any weld-on models, which need to be attached by someone with professional welding skills and equipment. The most common size for trailer frames is 4″ high and 3″ wide. Our bolt-on models and most of the others we sell will fit frames up to 3″ wide by 5″ tall.

You should. Boat lifts aren’t glamorous, but they can make all the difference in determining how much you really get to enjoy the Lake life!
It may seem like the boat or lift is only used on a few of the big weekends every season, but actually the lake is always using them. With wind, wave or wake the lift is moving, supporting and protecting your boat. Without the right boat lift, much of what you’ve invested at the Lake can be in jeopardy.
Here are six things to consider when you’re shopping for a boat lift.
1. LOCATION/STRUCTURAL STRENGTH
One important factor to consider when purchasing a boat lift is location.

Think Youre Done Not Quite Yet
Now add a margin of safety. This is usually between 10% and 20%. At this point, we select the next higher capacity for your lift. Why the need for all this? Heres a simple example of why we do this.
A man picks up a ball. For our purposes, lets say it weighs ¼ #. This presents no problem.
Next, the same ball is coming towards him at 90 mph. It hits him. It hits him. Do you think the ball feels like it weighs only 1/4 #? Obviously, the moving object will have the effect of more weight even though it still weighs just ounces.
Why the comparison? Many times in a storm, the waves will wash against the bottom of a boat. In severe storms, the boat may actually bounce up and down on the lift as the wave rolls across the bottom. Now you have a boat weighing 2,500 3,200 pounds bouncing up and down. The added weight of the boat at this time may result in a cable breaking. This situation is especially true if the lift was not properly sized originally or the cables are not in good shape. In severe cases, the boat may be washed off the lift completely. A future post will address the insurance issue watch for it.
Will the lift be able to take the shock of that bouncing? Thats why we go to the next size up. This is a common cause of cable failure. These shocks could cause a cable to break if they have rust or frayed strands. For more information SEE
Will I Benefit From A Shallow Water/kicked Cradle
Answer: If the water depth is deeper on one side of your slip than the other, a shallow water cradle will more than likely benefit you. Measure the depth at the center of the lift piling on the shallow side of your slip and compare it to the depth 3′ into your slip. This depth difference tells you how much water depth benefit you will get from electing a shallow water cradle.
Lifts that are located parallel to or on an angle in relation to the seawall generally benefit from a shallow water cradle. As the water depth on the outside of the lift closer to the center of the canal is generally deeper than the water depth close to the seawall. If your lift is oriented 90 degrees off the seawall the shallow water cradle more than likely will not help you for a water depth utilization purposes.
