Is Boat Insurance Worth It

What States Require Boat Insurance

boat insurance | Is boat insurance worth it | boat insurance colorado | boat insurance cost

As of right now, only two states have boat insurance lawsâArkansas and Utah. In Arkansas, all motorboats powered by engines of more than 50 horsepower, and all PWC, must be covered by a liability insurance policy. The policy must provide at least $50,000 of liability coverage, and it is illegal to operate the PWC without the required insurance.

In Utah, all motorboats and PWC are required to carry ownerâs or operatorâs liability insurance when operated on Utah waters. Motorboats equipped with engines less than 50 horsepower and airboats are exempt. It is illegal to operate a PWC on Utah waters without the required insurance.

Utahâs boat insurance policy requires the following minimum coverage limits per occurrence:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury per person.
  • $50,000 for total bodily injury if multiple people are hurt in the accident.
  • $15,000 for property damage.

There are some instances of states requiring insurance for boats used in some state parks or kept in some state-operated marinasâcheck with your state marine board or alternative governing agency to see if you are impacted.

Difference Between Motorboat And Rib Insurance

RIB Insurance only covers RIBs. RIB stands for ridged inflatable boat. RIBs have both inflatable and solid parts to their hulls and are almost always powered by outboard engines. RIBs could be considered as the 4x4s of the sea.

Theyre versatile, fast and almost unsinkable. Though they can be used as straight forward pleasure craft, RIBs are often used as safety boats by sailing clubs, excursion boats by SCUBA dive clubs and sometimes for thrill rides by tour companies and holiday resorts.

So whats covered by our motor boat policy?

The short answer is everything else where the sole method of propulsion is an engine. The long answer is: sport boats, sports cruisers and fast fishers among many others. Both RIB and motorboat policies feature third party cover, theft, malicious damage and vandalism cover and even personal accident when you take out our highest level of cover. Both policies have platinum, gold, silver and bronze levels of cover which means you can choose the level of cover to suit your usage and requirements.

Do I Need Boat Insurance When Its In Storage

Keeping your boat insured is a good idea, especially with comprehensive coverage. Your boat insurance will still cover theft, hail damage, and other hazards while its stored. Plus, you won’t have to worry about reactivating your policy once you’re ready to get back out on the water. However, some insurers will allow you to drop some coverages if youd prefer. For example, Progressive lets you adjust certain coverages while you’re not using your boat.

Why Do I Need Boat Insurance?

If theres one topic that always excites people when I bring it up at cookouts or dinner parties, its boat insurance.

And how much fun is it when you and your friends break out the pen and paper and start calculating the cost of the boat insurance you need to keep your family reliably covered.

Fun stuff, right?

Okay, so maybe talking about boat insurance isnt all that exciting, but it is important. Seriously.

Its important from a simple legal standpoint and to protect your familys financial future.

As a boat owner, boat insurance is an investment you really shouldnt skip. Thats my answer to one of the most common questions people ask. That question is:

Skisafe Is Cheap And Ready To Deny Your Claim

SkiSafe boat insurance is cheap and great as long as you never really need to make a claim. I purchased my policy through Geico. When I had an accident they said I was in a “layup” period which does not cover the boat in the event of an accident on the water. They denied my claim and I’m out about 10K in damages. When I confronted them about the layup period the response was we told you to read through the policy and let us know if you had any questions. I think the fact that there is a period that your boat is not covered if you are using it should be something disclosed upfront and not just if someone asks about it. I had never had a boat and I knew nothing about all this and in the policy it says at the top that your covered all year but at the bottom with one small sentence it says may be subject to layup period. I think they will try to get out of any claim they can and be as vague as they can about the policy in order to do so. I will not use this company again. Notice the one other review is clearly an attempt to counter balance this bad review.

Boat Insurance Costs And Discounts

How much youll pay for boat insurance depends on the level of insurance coverage you want, as well as the size, horsepower, type and value of your boat.

You can choose your deductible, which is the amount deducted from your insurance check if you make a claim. A typical policy has deductibles of $250 for property damage, $500 for theft and $1,000 for medical payments, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Liability claims against you do not have a deductible.

Insurance companies offer a variety of ways to save money, including discounts for:

  • Having a diesel-powered boat.
  • Not having made a previous boat insurance claim.
  • Carrying other policies, such as car or homeowners, with the same insurer.
  • Taking safety courses.

Types Of Boat Insurance

Damage reimbursement and liability are two sides of the same coin with boat insurance. Galbreath says liability requirements depend on state laws, as well as lender requirements if you have a mortgage or loan on the boat.

Another variable for coverage, he says, is if the boat will be out on a private lake, on a state lake or reservoir, a river or tributary, or on open water or the ocean. The greater the risks of adverse weather, theft or unfortunate encounters with other boaters, the more detailed the policy will be.

What Does Average Boat Insurance Cover

How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost and Do You Really Need It?

And now we get to perhaps the most important question here: What does boat insurance actually cover, anyway?

A lot of things, varying from policy to policy.

Take the time to customize your boat insurance plan to suit your needs. Carefully select what you and your family need, given your specific circumstances. To get you started, here are a few of the things covered by the average boat insurance policy, and that most boaters consider very important:

Medical Costs

If someone is injured in a boating accident thats found to be your fault , then your boat insurance plan will likely cover a good chunk of the medical expenses associated with the boating injuries.

This is also true if you or someone on your boat is hurt in an accident thats someone elses fault. This is important, especially if the other parties involved made the poor choice to skip getting boat insurance!

Liability Expenses

After a boating accident, regardless of whether there were medical bills, there are often legal costs. These could be potentially ruinous if you dont have good boat insurance coverage in place.

Property Damage

If your boat is involved in an incident that causes property damage to another vessel, a dock or part of a marinaor even simply to itselfyoull be glad you have boat insurance when the repairs or replacements are covered by your insurer, and not your personal bank account.

Why You Need Boat Insurance

When financing a boat, you may not want to think about adding any other costs to your budget. After all, a ship can be a hefty purchase. However, it’s because ships can cost so much that you should invest in an insurance policy to protect it.

In 2017, the US Coast Guard reported over four-thousand recreational boating accidents in the year, amounting to roughly 46 million dollars in property damage between collisions, falls overboard, flooding, swamping, and other incidents. No matter the cause of the accident, having insurance can help you pay for damages you may not be able to afford out of pocket.

In some cases, your homeowner’s insurance policy may cover part of your boat however, relying entirely on this coverage can be risky, as it may not give you everything you need to protect your boat in all potential situations. It’s much better to purchase a separate policy specifically for your ship to have the best results.

You’re Probably Not Required By Law To Carry Boat Insurance But That Doesn’t Mean You Don’t Need It

A few states require that you have liability coverage on certain types of boats powerboats with more than 50 horsepower or personal watercrafts , for example or on boats used in state parks or kept in state-run marinas. To find out if you are legally required to have insurance on your boat, search online for state and “boat insurance requirements.”

Even if your state does not require you to carry boat insurance, your bank will if you have a loan on the boat, and your marina might. You won’t be able to get a loan on your boat without providing the bank with proof of insurance that covers the full value of the boat in the event of a loss. The bank gets listed as the lien holder on the policy so that if any loss payments are made it will be listed as a co-payee on the check. Most marinas require proof of liability insurance before it will accept a contract for a slip or a mooring, and some will want to be listed as an additional insured on the policy.

Do You Offer Any Services Beyond Towing

My crew and I are available 24/7/365, on the water and off, as a resource to boaters. For example, well provide a free escort through treacherous areas, such as Woods Hole. We prefer to help our members avoid issues and keep them out of trouble. Ive also helped members plan trips along the East Coast, using my knowledge from years of yacht deliveries to guide them and plan an itinerary with some local knowledge.

Being a member means having access to a captain with a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge, and that provides a comfort level for boaters that you cannot get with any other service. For example, I have a member who fishes offshore in the canyons, well beyond cell service. He bought a Garmin product that allows for communication via satellite text, and he uses my cell number as the contact. For him, membership is about knowing you have a direct link to someone who is available, 24/7. And if something were to happen and he needed assistance, we have the assets including a 41-foot ex-Coast Guard vessel with the speed and range to get offshore and tow in larger sportfishing vessels.

How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost

The cost of boat insurance depends on many factors, but in general, you can expect to pay 1.5% of the value of your boat for coverage annually. For example:

  • A skiff worth $25,000 may cost $375 a year to insure.
  • If you own a motorboat worth $200,000, the cost could be $3,000.
  • A 70-foot luxury yacht worth $5 million could cost $75,000 a year to insure.

The exact cost you pay will depend on factors such as:

  • The characteristics of your boat such as value, length, age, engine type and category
  • Location of anchorage and usage
  • Boat owner experience level
  • Boat insurance claim history
  • Safety measures such as whether you have taken a safety course from the U.S. Coast Guard
  • Driving history

Depending on the offerings of your insurance provider, you might be able to qualify for boat insurance discounts. Buying multiple insurance policies from one insurer, called bundling, can net you a price break. Many car insurance companies have bundling discounts for boats and autos. Some other discounts can include:

  • Claims-free insurance history
  • Having fire extinguishers approved by the U.S. Coast Guard on board
