Our mail-in boat registration procedures were established to meet our fiduciary responsibility to both the State of Georgia and to our customers. The first objective for mail-in payments is to ensure that customers fees are processed and recorded in such a manner to prevent mishandling of payments, in part accomplished by keeping the number of individuals handling your payment to the lowest level possible. The P.O. Box that receives your boat registration application and payment are physically located at a bank processing center used by the State of Georgia so that your payment is deposited immediately upon receipt. A scanned image of your check or money order is generated as a reference, and your boat registration application is sent from the bank to our license vendor for processing and fulfillment. If the application is complete and all necessary documents are present, the application is typically processed within 48 hours. Decals are created each night and mailed 5 days a week. It typically takes about two weeks from the time we receive your application at the P.O. Box until you receive your decals, or receive a letter or email stating that the application is not complete or documents are missing.

How To Register A Boat Trailer In North Carolina

The money raised by the Highway Use Tax you pay to title and tag a boat trailer substitutes for a state sales tax. Registering your boat is a simple matter of filling out forms and paying fees. Registration for boat trailers is a privilege limited to North Carolina residents, with few exceptions. While standing in line waiting to register a boat trailer is hardly the way you expect to spend your precious boating time, like caring for a dinged hull or “nursing her” through a stretch of river populated with sandbars, it’s part of boating.

Go to the Vehicle and License Plate Renewal Office in the county where you are a resident. You are required to present a North Carolina driver’s license or North Carolina state-issued identification card to register the trailer unless you are active-duty military personnel stationed in North Carolina or a college student attending school in North Carolina.

Complete the “Title Application ” form and present it to the Vehicle and License Plate Renewal Office. This form asks for you to declare all liens and sign certifying that you’re financially responsible for the trailer. This form requires a notary.

Pay the title fee, the license plate fee, the Regional Transportation Authority Registration Tax for Vehicles Registered in Wake, Durham and Orange Counties, if applicable, and the Highway Use Tax. As of September 2017, the Highway Use Tax for trailers is 3 percent of the trailer’s purchase price.

My Registration Expired And Now Im Told The Registration Numbers On My Boat Arent Available And Must Be Changed Why

    REGISTERING A BOAT

When boat registration numbers expire, they become available to be reused. We do this because of the limited quantity of numbers available. While the odds favor that an expired registration number wont be quickly selected by the computer once it expires, it is available upon expiration and if reassigned is no longer available to the previous registrant. We suggest maintaining boat registrations rather than letting them expire. An expired registration incurs an additional $10 late fee at renewal.

Georgia is a title state for vessels. Once the registration is finalized, registered vessels have a Georgia eTitle in the vessel registration system. Outboard motors over 25 hp are included on the title. There are two methods for recording a security interest or lien in a Georgia registered vessel.

  • A lender may use the Security Interest or Lien form to record a security interest in a Georgia registered vessel. The cost to record the lien is $10. The lien will be recorded on the electronic record in the Georgia vessel registration system. The lienholder will receive an Owner of Record letter to show the lien was filed on the eTitle. A paper copy of the title showing the lien may be requested by the lienholder for an additional $10. When the lien is satisfied the lienholder will send the Security Interest or Lien form to release the lien, or if a paper title was purchased the lien is released by returning the paper title. The vessel returns to an eTitle in the vessel owners name. Address and directions for releasing the lien appear on the form and on the title.
  • A lender with a security interest may record outstanding debt against a vessel and an individual by filing a Georgia UCC-1 form through the Georgia Superior Court Clerks Cooperative Authority. Refer to the following site for information and a checklist:

Although a title is not required, your car must still be registered with the DMV. As previously said, prepare a bill of sale signed byall parties and travel to the DMV to register the new boat/trailer. You will need to bring proof of insurance as well.

You can also register your vehicle with the Coast Guard if it was used during the time period when you were granted citizenship status. This process is called “historicizing” your vehicle. To do this, you will need documentation such as registration renewals, bills of sale, or use and function reports. These documents should show that you owned the vehicle before becoming a citizen and after acquiring naturalization papers.

If you do not have any of these documents, you cannot register your vehicle with the Coast Guard. However, even if you are able to register your vehicle, this does not change the fact that it is illegal for you to drive it on U.S. roads without proper citizenship papers.

    The First Steps To Register

The first step for you to take with registration is to get all your necessary paperwork in order. You will need to provide documentation to Transport Canada, the government agency responsible for vessel registration. You must have proof that you are a Canadian resident, and you also must show that you are the rightful owner or one of the owners of the boat. Providing a copy of the bill of sale for your boat is going to be what you will do as part of your submission of the registration documents. You also need to fill out the appropriate application, so finding the paperwork you need matters as well. There will also be a registration fee that you must pay.
