Its important to note that sometimes youll see two different sets of numbers on a boat: the hull identification number and the registration number. Its important not to get these confused.

The HIN is the same as a car or trucks VIN and acts as a form of identification by the manufacturer. This will not have the validation sticker next to it.

The number that has a sticker next to it is the registration number, which is more important.

The registration number usually begins with your states abbreviation and is followed by a random set of numbers and letters.

United States Coast Guard Documented Vessel Certification And Registration

If you are a Missouri resident, you have 30 days from acquiring the documented vessel to apply for a Documented Vessel Certificate of Registration . If you do not apply within 30 days, you will incur a penalty of $10 on the 31st day, increasing another $10 for every 30 days you are late up to a maximum penalty of $30.

If you are a nonresident, you have 60 days from acquiring or bringing the documented vessel into Missouri to apply for a Documented Vessel Certificate of Registration, if the vessel is to be kept in Missouri over 60 consecutive days.     What Is A Hull Identification Number

    The Hull Identification Number is a 12 or 14 character serial number that uniquely identifies a boat. The HIN is analogous to a VIN on a car. All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972, must bear a HIN, and this HIN must be identified during the boat registration process. Vessels manufactured or imported before 1972 are EXEMPT because they often do not have a HIN.

    The HIN is found on a metal or plastic plate, typically on the transom of the boat, usually on the right starboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. On vessels without transoms, or impractical to use transoms, the HIN is usually affixed to the starboard outboard side of hull, aft, within one foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest. On catamarans and pontoon boats with replaceable hulls, the HIN is usually affixed to the aft crossbeam, within one foot of the starboard hull attachment.

    Boats And Vessels Are Not Required To Be Titled Or Registered In The State Of Missouri If They Are:

    • Owned by out-of-state residents and housed, stored, or operated in the state of Missouri for less than 60 consecutive days
    • Owned by the United States Government
    • From a country other than the United States using the waters of this state for less than 60 consecutive days

    How To Get A Motorboat Or Jet Ski License

    The Motor Vehicle Commission issues motorboat and personal watercraft licenses for use on fresh, non-tidal waters or lakes, creeks or rivers not affected by tidal conditions. A boat license and New Jersey Boat Safety Certificate are required to operate a power vessel or personal watercraft – jet ski or wave runner – on non-tidal waters of New Jersey. A boat license is not required for non-powered vessels.

    New Boat Registrations

    Federal law requires a hull number on all vessels manufactured in 1973 or later. The hull number must be given on the application. If the vessel has a “CT” number , that number stays with the vessel and must be entered on the application.

    If a vessel has a US documented number or a Foreign Documented number then that vessel is not eligible to obtain a CT Title. You will receive a CT vessel registration using your documented numbers.

    Vessels eligible for titles are vessels with a model year of 2017 and newer, or vessels that were previously documented either US or Foreign. Documentation from the Coast Guard is required to show that the Vessel was and is no longer documented.

    Checking on your vessel registration is fairly simple. First, locate the registration numbers on your vessel.

    These are usually found along either side and towards the front of the boat.

    Next, locate the validation sticker and make sure the registration has not expired. You are required to have both the validation sticker and the registration number on your vessel at all times.

    Upon purchase of a newly acquired boat, vessel, or outboard motor you may purchase a temporary permit to operate the boat, vessel, or outboard motor on Missouriâs waterways.

    • If the unit is not a documented vessel, a temporary permit will be issued for a period of up to 30 days, and must expire prior to the 60th day from the purchase date of the boat, vessel, or outboard motor. If the unit is a documented vessel, a temporary permit will be issued for a period of up to 60 days from the temporary permit issuance date.
    • The applicant may be a Missouri or out-of-state resident.
    • Temporary permits are non-renewable.
    • Temporary permits may not be purchased once application for title and registration has been made.
    • Temporary permits may NOT be purchased for a salvage boat, vessel, or outboard motor.

    New Registrations And Renewals

    Registration may be obtained only from the county treasurer in the boaters county of residence. Boat owners may renew registration with the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles or their county treasurers office.

    Vessels 16 feet or over but less than 26 feet in length $46.00*

    Boat Vessel And Documented Vessel Registration Renewal Requirements

    A boat, vessel, or documented vessel registration must be renewed every three years. The registration expires on June 30th in the year specified on the decal. There is no late renewal penalty.Outboard motor decals are not required to be renewed.
