Learn about boat owners insurance and what the coverage means to you.

Did you know that boat insurance is one of the earliest known forms of insurance? Ancient sailors knew firsthand about the risks of a life at sea and sought to insure their boats against hurricanes and other unpredictable weather and waters. And it still applies today.

Boat insurance policies can vary widely in what they do and do not cover based on a number of considerations, including the type of boat, the waters it will traffic, and how many months of the year the boat will be used. Still, there are a few basic kinds of coverage you can expect to receive, as well as some potential discounts for safe boaters.

When you purchase insurance over the internet…..expect to be treated this way! They will just deny the claim in hopes that you do not fight them. Do yourself a favor if you haven’t already and get a good Independent Agent on your side that will FIGHT FOR YOU!! Call your agent if you have one…….there should be coverage for your lower unit for hitting a submerged object……the insurance company is handing you a line of B.S.!Good luck!

Should You Insure Your Boat Even If You Only Use It Seasonally

Moving and Storage Insurance

Yes. Even if you use your boat only a few months out of the year, it’s still important to protect yourself against fire, theft, vandalism, and even liability while your boat is in storage.

Fortunately, quality coverage is affordable. Plus, your policy premium also considers the length of the boating season in your state.

Tips & Recommendations For Replacing Your Gearcase Lower Unit

It happens just plain bad luck hitting an underwater tree stump, rock or other invisible debris and your boat lower unit is shot. After you get towed safely back to shore and have a chance to regroup, what are your next action steps? We have written this article to outline the step you should take if you damage your lower unit. Use this as a reference tool as you navigate through the process of repairing or replacing your gearcase lower unit.

First off, if you think you have damage to your lower unit but are hoping that it will be okay if you ignore the problem, be aware that internal damage to your unit may not be noticeable right away. Slightly damaged gears may seem to work fine at first but over time the off-kilter gears will wear away and cause eventual failure. We recommend you have your motor diagnosed thoroughly to determine if you have internal damage. Check out this forum for further evidence: What smacking a boulder does to your lower unit gears.

The choices you have when replacing a lower unit include a brand-new OEM unit, a remanufactured OEM unit or a new aftermarket unit. I will discuss the pros and cons of each below.

How Does Boat Insurance Cover Engine Damage

If your insurer agrees to cover it, how you get reimbursed for your engine depends on the coverage outlined in your policy. With actual cash value protection, youll always receive less than what you paid for your engine due to depreciation. The older the engine is at the time of its failure, the less youll get for it.

With an agreed-upon value or hull value policy, your insurer may pay to replace a new one without accounting for depreciation if its within a few years old. The cut-off for deducting appreciation varies by company its usually between 3 to 7 years. For instance, one insurer may replace your 5-year-old engine without deducting depreciation, while another one may.

Your provider also might have certain limits when replacing your engine. For example, Progressive will cover engines up to 700 HP for single engines or 1,400 HP for twin engines on cruisers, motor yachts, and ski/wake boats with inboard or inboard/outboard engines.

Well pay to repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or upper & lower units of an inboard/outboard motor if you have a mechanical breakdown. And yes, well still cover it if its caused by general wear and tear. Starts at $38/year. Propulsion Plus does not apply to jet drives or inboard motors.

The boat owner should select a carrier, agent, and policy that meets their specific needs. In most cases, this means not selecting a policy based on the price, but on what you get in return. Even large differences in premium will be made up quickly if you select an inadequate policy, an uninformed agent, or an indifferent carrier.

carolinianI’m wondering if anyone knows about boat insurance. My question is a general question as I’m sure policies from different insurance companies all differ to some degree, but…Here’s what happened:A couple nights ago, I was landing my boat and, I forgot to raise the trim, and as I attempted to drive it onto my trailer the prop/lower unit got hung up on the bottom and… the lower unit was totally destroyed. It was actually only connected to the boat itself by a couple of cables. The lower unit was actually laying there on its side with the drive shaft sticking out. It was surreal let me tell you. I’ve had this boat for 6 years and landed it many many times with never any problems.I have full coverage, and as I understand it, policies usually cover collisions , and I suppose this is a collision, but I wonder if there are any rules pertaining to such a boneheaded mistake on my part. Boat is a 18′ bow rider with a 4.3 liter merc I/O…..Anyone have any opinions, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance….
