By law, any new or used motor vessel, other than a Jet Ski type personal watercraft, must display a sticker that warns passengers of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Use the Washington State CO warning sticker or a Department of Licensing approved sticker previously installed in another state or by the manufacturer. Boaters visiting Washington may recreate on state waters for up to 60 days without a permit as long as the vessel is registered in another state or has current U.S. Coast Guard documentation. If you plan to be on Washington waters longer, apply for a permit on or before the 60th day of your visit. To get a permit, visit any Vehicle Licensing Office, bring your unexpired state vessel registration and identification from your state. You may renew the permit once for an additional 60 days. When the renewed permit expires, you must either register your boat in Washington or remove your boat from Washington waters.

Starting July 2013, Georgia residents who have a boat registered with the state can fish on their birthday as part of their boat registration fee.

Its a one-day bonus for the states some 300,000 resident boat owners. This offer from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources also covers use of some DNR shooting ranges, plus some other sporting privileges. To take advantage of it, boat owners just have to get outdoors.

The birthday bonus is a one-day resident combination license that not only allows Georgians 16 and older who own a vessel and have a valid, current registration to fish , it covers many other recreational opportunities, including fishing at public fishing areas, accessing state lands where a Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass is otherwise required, hunting small game and feral hogs on private land, and using shooting ranges where a license is required.

Boat owners must carry a Georgia ID, such as a drivers license, and their plastic vessel registration card to show proof of a valid vessel registration. Activities like mountain trout fishing and big-game and migratory bird hunting require additional paid licenses. Saltwater fishing requires an additional free permit.

When a person dies, title to their property, including any vessels they owned, becomes vested in another person. A formal legal process guides this action. Legal documents may be available to show who gained ownership of a vessel from the estate, or who has legal authority, such as an Executor or Administrator of an estate, to dispose of a vessel.

To transfer registration, the Department of Natural Resources must have a legal document reflecting the change in ownership of the vessel. We have past instances where we learn ownership of a vessel is in dispute. For example, someone may have sold a deceased’s vessel to a third party and others in the family or spouse claim the seller had no ownership claim to legally sell the vessel. Therefore, the person that sold the boat was not the owner and the buyer is unable to legally transfer registration.

Alright, so now that weve gone through the states that may require an inflatable boat or kayak to be registered, how would you register it? Like everything else, this is going to be dependent on which state you live in, but it will almost always be run through the DMV for your state. Youll likely need to know the following things about your inflatable boat or kayak:

  • The vessel length

  • Make and model of boat
  • Type of motor used

    My research really comes down to how you take care of your inflatable boat. The average lifespan is about 8 to 12 years. A few last longer, and many dont even last that long. PVC boats that are left in the sun or on the water, dealing with the full weather issues, may not last 5 years. Its best to store your boat in a cool dry environment. But reality is, most of us dont and wont store our boat indoors.

    I store our boat in my shed and I know it gets very hot in there.

    Why you ask? Because we live like most of you do, in a Hot and Humid Summer location. It gets pretty toasty here!!

    All I can do to help protect it, is to make sure we put it away clean and dry, plus keep it in the shade. I believe no matter how long our boat last, if we divide the cost of our boat by the years it last, and the FUN and FREEDOM we enjoy while using it, certainly outways any so called issues with the boat that we are not able to repair.
