Where To Buy Numbers For Boat

Requirements To Operate On Wisconsin Waters

How old is my boat? – Your HIN number explained !

Wisconsin state law states that no person may operate, and no owner may give permission for the operation of, any boat on the waters of this state unless the boat is covered by a certificate of number, a registration certificate, registration expiration decals, and if greater than 16 feet, a Wisconsin issued certificate of title or a Federal Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation.

In order to operate you must have the assigned registration number and expiration decals displayed on the side of the boat. In addition, the certificate of number must be carried onboard and available for inspection at all times. In Wisconsin, the certificate of number and the certificate of registration are combined into the same waterproof card. Boat owners may also operate on the authority of a 60-day temporary operating receipt if boat was recently registered and owner has not received registration materials in the mail.

Exceptions to the requirement to register a boat include:

  • Sailboats 12 feet in length or less and not equipped with a motor, and sailboards.
  • Manually propelled boats that are not equipped with a motor or sail.
  • Boats registered in another state and using Wisconsin waters for less than 60 consecutive days.

What Is Hull Id Lookup

When buying a boat, getting the vessel report is not enough. It is paramount for you to do a HULL ID lookup. Most of the sites will require you to fill in the boat model, year, and HULL ID.

The information you fill in the HULl ID lookup site will be enough to determine if the ID is for the boat you have or not. In most sites, it will not be asked to pay to get this information.

Before a man buys a boat, it is critical for you to get this information to ensure that the boat you have bought is right for you.

Getting the information is a way of protecting your interest and ensuring that you are not scammed.

About 2018 North Carolina started sending out the registration numbers without a second hyphen. This caused a little confusion how North Carolina describes how the boat numbers should appear. In one section it says that it needs hyphens between letters and numbers and in a different section they say that it needs to appear exactly as on the registration card mailed to you. We produce the decal with both hyphens so the customer can decide to remove the second hyphen if they see fit.

Q: What Is So Important About The Hull Identification Number

A: All Massachusetts boats must have an approved Hull Identification Number in order to be registered and/or titled. The HIN is unique to each boat, which allows the full history of the vessel to be traced from the manufacturer forward. The HIN is designed so that tampering will cause clear and permanent damage to the boats hull, so it is critical in all stolen boat investigations. A vessel shall not operate on the States waters unless the vessel displays the assigned HIN affixed by the manufacturer as required by the US Coast Guard, pursuant to Title 33 CFR, Part 181, Subpart C manufacturer requirements, but OLE may issue HINs for homemade boats and any manufactured vessel that does not have an assigned HIN. The number contains at least 12 characters and is permanently mounted or engraved on the upper right corner of the transom. Federal regulations require that the number is also placed in a second location which varies by manufacturer and model. If applicable, at the time of registration, your boat will be assigned a HIN . You will be given instructions on how to place this HIN on your boat. You must provide proof, to the registration office, of the HIN placement on your boat before you will receive your registration card and decal.
