Bannister Law said Australians who bought Banana Boat aerosol sunscreens could mount a legal case against the company.

“We’d like a full refund for all consumers who have purchased and been misled by the packaging,” Mr Bannister said.

A spokesperson from Edgewell Personal Care Australia, which owns Banana Boat, disputed the test findings.

“These results are entirely inconsistent with the testing we have conducted at Edgewell’s reputable labs in accordance with the Australian mandatory standard as regulated by the TGA ,” they said.

“All Banana Boat products meet the SPF claim as labelled on pack.”

What Sunscreen Is Safe For Coral Reefs

Just like reading food labels: the simpler the formula, the better. The safest sunscreens for reefs are mineral-based sunscreens that do not wash off your body when in the ocean.

These sunscreens use minerals that are physical blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun without the use of chemicals, like oxybenzone that penetrates the skin and stay in the body for an unknown amount of time.

Also, look for coated, non-nano ingredients. Not all sunscreens are created equal, so I scoured the internet to find the best options out there for you to choose

How To Safely Store Sunscreen

Though sunscreen should have a 3-year window for use, thats only if the proper care is payed in regard to storing. Its important to keep your sunscreen cool and out of direct sunlight, even when youre at the beach, pool, or lake. The FDA suggests wrapping it in a beach towel, tucking it in your bag, or storing it in your cooler.

When Was Sunscreen Invented

Banana Boat Sport Performance CoolZone Sunscreen Lotion ...

The first commercially successful sunscreen in the United States was invented in 1938 by a Swiss student named Franz Grieter. He is also credited with the term Sun Protection Factor, better known as SPF.

Greiter was climbing an Appalachian mountain range when he was burnt to a crisp by the brutal UV rays. This experience was so memorably painful that he was inspired to create a sun-blocking lotion that he called Glacier Cream. This product, which only had an SPF 2 rating, was eventually bought and sold by a company called Piz Buin, a brand thats still going strong to this day.

Sunscreen was super sticky and thick when it was first invented. Thankfully, the brands we use today rely on hydrating formulas that keep us feeling silky smooth!

Sunscreen Tips And Quick Reminders

Dermatologists recommend always using sunscreen while exposed to the sun and opting for a sun protection factor of at least SPF 30. The AAD also recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, meaning it protects the skin from both Ultraviolet A rays associated with signs of aging and Ultraviolet B rays, which can cause skin damage like sunburns and skin cancer. For continuous sun protection, be sure to reapply your sunscreen after sweating or taking a dip.

How To Store Sunscreen To Keep It Effective

Keep sunscreen in good condition by storing it in a cool, dark place. Exposing the container to excessive heat or direct sun can cause its ingredients to become less effective.

When outdoors, you can protect sunscreen by wrapping the bottle in a towel or placing it in the shade. Keep the lid on firmly at all times.

If youre going to be out in the sun for a long time, you can store sunscreen in a cooler. Another idea is to apply sunscreen indoors so you can avoid taking it out in the sun.

What Does Spf Mean

The term SPF is often used in association with sunscreens. It stands for Sun Protection Factor and is the rating system used to measure which fraction of UV rays will reach your skin.

Heres a quick breakdown of how SPF works!

If fractions werent your specialty in math class, heres what you need to know. The higher the SPF rating, the less harmful UV radiation will reach your skin. Be sure to read the labels!

What You Need To Know About The Banana Boat Sunscreen Investigation

Banana Boat Sunscreen Lotion Review | Best Sunscreen Ever??

Health Canada has been investigating Banana Boat sunscreens since serious chemical burns were reported in babies who used the products last year.

May 10, 2018

Last year, after several reports of babies developing serious chemical burns upon using Banana Boat sunscreens, Health Canada launched an investigation into the products. By mid-July of 2017, the department of health had received nearly 200 complaints from Canadians about Banana Boat sunscreen products. Now, with sunscreen season ramping up again, we checked in with Health Canada to find out what parents need to know to protect their kids this year.

Could your babys sunscreen cause severe burns? Health Canada told us that they tested a number of Banana Boat sunscreen products and reviewed Banana Boats own testing on the products associated with the complaints of reported chemical burns. The tests and review of company results confirmed that the samples contained the correct amount of medicinal ingredients, that the pH levels of the samples were satisfactory, and that no undeclared drugs were identified, said the statement from a Health Canada spokesperson.

If Health Canadas continuing investigation finds evidence of a safety or quality concern with any sunscreen, the department says it will take immediate action and keep Canadians informed.

Here S How To Tell When Your Sunscreen Expires Insider

Banana Boat Inundated With Social Media Complaints Last Summer

In January, dozens of people flooded Banana Boat’s Facebook page to complain that they had experienced sunburns despite using their products.

One Melbourne woman told the ABC she had to be prescribed pain medication after suffering “horrific” burns on the backs of her legs while wearing Banana Boat spray-on SPF 50.

A number of people also reported experiencing similar problems with Cancer Council products.

Banana Boat insisted its products were safe and said consumers were not applying enough sunscreen to adequately protect themselves from the sun.

Mr Bannister said he believed his test results showed the consumer was not to blame.

“The tests conducted by Eurofins Dermatest indicate substantial problems with Banana Boat’s aerosol range, and not consumers’ poor application,” Mr Bannister said.

Aerosol spray sunscreens have become popular in recent years because they feel lighter than creams and are easy to apply on squirming children.

But some dermatologists say it is difficult to get enough protection from aerosols, and the product can often blow away if applied outdoors.

The TGA is reviewing the manufacture, labelling and safety of sunscreens with a report expected to be finished by the end of the year.

If You Cant Find An Expiration Date Your Sunscreen Is Likely Good For Up To Three Years

The Food and Drug Administration requires all sunscreens keep their original strength for three years, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. So you probably dont need to toss last summers sunscreen.

The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends writing the date you bought the sunscreen on the bottle so that youll know when three years has passed and its time to throw it out.

Signs that your sunscreen is expired can include any obvious changes in the color or consistency, according to the AAD.

But if youre using sunscreen properly, a bottle should not last you for very long anyway.

Sunscreen Recall : Coppertone Neutrogena And More

Banana Boat, Ultra Sport, Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50+, 8 oz ...

Some Coppertone, Neutrogena and Aveeno products have been recalled after a test detected small amounts of a carcinogen.

Coppertone and Johnson & Johnson have recalled some sunscreen products over benzene contamination concerns.

Even during winter, sunscreen should be part of your daily routine. But it’s important to make sure you’re not accidentally using a recalled product.

In May, independent pharmaceutical testing company Valisure found that 78 lots of sunscreens and sun care products contained benzene, a known carcinogen that has been linked to blood cancer and other illnesses. Forty products were found to have “significantly detected” levels of benzene out of the 78 lots. While short-term use of a product with small traces of benzene is unlikely to cause harm, the concern is long-term use of a product people use frequently, such as sunscreen.

In response to the findings, Johnson & Johnson announced in July that it was voluntarily recalling select Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol spray sunscreens “out of an abundance of caution.”

The recall affects the following products:

  • Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen
  • Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen
  • Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense aerosol sunscreen
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer aerosol sunscreen
  • Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen

If you have these aerosol sunscreen products, Johnson & Johnson recommends you dispose of them and contact the company for a refund.

When Was Banana Boat Sunscreen Invented

Banana Boat sunscreen was invented in 1992 by a former lifeguard in Miami Beach named Robert Bell. His formula includes a mixture of coconut, fruit, baby oil, and iodine.

Like many great entrepreneurs, Bell started his company while he was in college at Florida International University. He managed to totally raise the bar in the sunscreen industry with the introduction of SPF 23. Before then, only SPF 15 was available on the market, which is approved by the FDA but not nearly as strong as higher SPFs.

Banana Boat is one of the leading brands in sunscreen today. Their most popular products, including Sport Performance and Ultra Sport, made over $94 million in 2019.

May 27th is National Sunscreen Day! Its that beautiful time of the year when the sun is burning hot, and you should make sure to wear the right SPF.

Is Your Sunscreen Causing Cancer

The majority of sunscreens on the market today are more harmful than beneficial. Sunscreens are designed to decrease your risk of skin cancer and allow you to enjoy the sun without worry. Unfortunately, most modern day sunscreens may increase your risk of cancer and disrupt the functioning of your hormones.

What causes skin cancers?

Ultraviolet radiation from UV-A and UV-B rays from sun exposure is the number one cause of skin cancer. Smoking, HPV and artificial light from tanning beds are also associated with an increased risk of skin cancer.

UV-A vs. UV-B

UV-B rays penetrate only the epidermis and increase your risk of cancer by direct photochemical damage to your DNA, resulting in mutations in your genes. These mutations contribute to wrinkling and aging of the skin by degrading elastin and collagen.

UV-A rays penetrate deeper into the dermis and can contribute to the development of cancer by increasing reactive oxygen species, which can, in turn, damage your DNA.Therefore, when choosing a sunscreen, you should opt for a sunscreen that blocks both UV-A and UV-B rays.

Origin of sunscreen

If zinc oxide is so effective, why is it rarely used today?

Aesthetically, zinc oxide is a disaster. Because it is not absorbed into your skin like most sunscreen products, you’re left with a pasty white substance all over your skin with each application.

Heres How To Tell If Your Sunscreen Is Expired

Banana Boat Simply Protect Sensitive Sunscreen Review

Heres the lowdown on how to tell if sunscreen is expired before you pack it on your next trip.

Yes, your sunscreen can expire. In fact, most beauty products have expiration dates somewhere on their label, but you might not realize it because they can look a little different than the expiration dates youre more accustomed to on food. Its important not only to check the sunscreens you already have in your bathroom cabinets, but also to scope out the labels on sun-protection products before you even buy them to make sure the formulas still work.

An investigation by Good Morning Americafound that some popular storesincluding Target, Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens locations in Chicago, DC, LA and New Jerseywere still selling sunscreens past their expiration dates, unbeknownst to sun-fearing customers. After visiting a total of 17 stores, the GMA team discovered 68 expired bottles still on the stores shelves despite policies to make sure expired products dont remain out for sale.

While most of the stores highlighted in GMAs story have responded that theyre looking into this major concern, its still important to be an informed consumer and look out for yourselfespecially with something as critical to your health as sun protection.

On a bottle of Banana Boat sunscreen, for example, GMA explained that the first two numbers represent the year the product was manufactured, while the next three indicate the exact day of the year.

Why Does Sunscreen Have An Expiration Date

Because the ingredients in sunscreen can go bad or spoil, the Food and Drug Administration requires sunscreens to carry an expiration date. That date indicates when the FDA deems the product no longer effective, which is usually three years after the product was made.
