What Makes It Great
Three hundred miles of undeveloped, undulating shoreline packed with nooks and crannies waiting to be explored is at the heart of what makes paddling at the Land Between the Lakes so special! Paddlers will marvel at the unrivaled scenery as they travel along the numerous bays and rugged bluffs of Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.
To help enhance recreation and conservation in the area, the park has partnered with a variety of state and federal agencies to establish a regional water trail system called the Land Between the Lakes Water Trail. They even have a few routes already identified for use.
One of the water trails already developed is the Kuttawa Landing Rookery Water Trail, which is near a 4-acre heron, egret, and cormorant rookery with thousands of nesting birds and is very popular with birdwatchers. This 2-hour paddle is recommended for advanced paddlers as it is found on the main channel of the Cumberland River.
The Ginger Bay Water Trail highlights a large bay off of Kentucky Lake with rocky limestone bluffs on parts of the shoreline. Pull over for a picnic and to explore the rocks that are filled with fossils such as crinoids, brachiopods and ancient clams.
Swimming is allowed anywhere in the park so no worries about jumping overboard when the temps being to rise. If youre going ashore, be sure to bring insect repellent to protect yourself from ticks from March through October.
About Land Between The Lakes
Situated between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, Land Between The Lakes features over 265 square miles of backroads, hiking and biking trails, water trails, historical exhibits and interactive attractions. Visitors can enjoy the Woodlands Nature Station, an interactive wildlife exhibit that has the feel of a zoo. Step back in time at the Homeplace 1850s Living History Farm and watch interpreters demonstrate pre-Civil War farm life. The Golden Pond Planetarium offers daily shows and often hosts special astronomy exhibits. Turkey Bay OHV area inside LBL features 2,500 acres of ATV and Jeep madness. Homeplace 1850 Working Farm And Living History Museum

The farm and museum represents a two-generation farm operational in the mid-19th century. Visitors can stroll throughout the farm and observe actors in period clothing performing era-specific tasks on the farm. Take a trip to the gardens to learn more about heirloom gardening. Pop into the Tool Barn to see tools and farm equipment from the era. Meet all the farmplace animals, which include rare and endangered breeds.
The farm and museum are open from May to November. Pay a small entry fee to experience this immersive take on farm life.

Directions Parking & Regulations
To get there follow the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway which is the main north/south road into the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area or follow the directions to the specific put-in desired. Parking is limited, and while some put-ins have vault toilets and trash dumpsters, none have water. Plan to pack it in and pack it out.
There are restroom facilities, picnic areas and developed and back country camping in the park, much of which is accessible via boat. Due to the location spanning parts of Western Kentucky and Tennessee, youll have to follow applicable state fishing rules and have appropriate licenses when fishing in each state. Boating At Kentucky Lake
Kentucky Lake offers 160,000 acres of water and boating fun, with 2,380 miles of shoreline and it all starts just 1/2 mile from our resort! Lake Barkley is a 57,920-acre lake just 8 miles from Kentucky Lake Cottages.
There are numerous free public boat launches/ramps located close to our resort. Kenlake Marina is the closest boat launch which is located within a mile of Kentucky Lake Cottages. It is a privately owned marina within the state park system, offering nightly rentals of covered and uncovered boat slips, and a free public boat launch/ramp. They offer boat rentals of various sizes, including fishing boats, pontoon boats, and ski boats. And Kentucky Lake is a great place to bring your sailboat!

Fenton Landing is located just across the new 5-lane Kentucky Lake bridge in Land Between the Lakes. Cherokee Beach Boat launch area, is secluded and conveniently located about a mile from Kentucky Lake Cottages.

Kenlake Marina is located on one of the most beautiful cruising, boating, and fishing watersin the Southeast United States. For anyone that has a boat or is thinking about buying a cruising style boat and wants a covered or uncovered marina slip, we suggest you narrow your choice to Kentucky or Barkley Lakes. These lakes have relatively deep fresh water that is perfect for fishing, swimming and water sports in summer.
The marina is a friendly place. Most of the slip holders live in larger cities and come from relatively long distances away, , and stay the whole weekend living on their boats. In locations such as Old Hickory Lake in Nashville people come to their boats for an hour or two, take a short cruise, and then go home.

Pontoon Boat Rental At Land Between The Lakes Kuttawa Harbor Marina
When visiting the Land Between the Lakes you cant help but to want to be on the water. When we were there in September the water was as smooth as glass and the weather was perfect for boating. We just missed the peak season, so rates were low and boats were available without reservations. We enjoyed a mid-day cruise around the Kuttawa Harbor Marina with Toko.
We choose an hour scenic drive from Lake Barkley to Kuttawa Harbor Marina so we could see some Kentucky farmlands and different sections of The Land Between the Lakes. Also, Kuttawa Harbor offered low rental rates and dog-friendly pontoons. We paid $156 for a four hour rental including gas.
The section of the lake near Kuttawa Harbor is busier and more industrial than the area near the Lake Barkley Resort. There were several barges hauling goods up and down the Cumberland River. We navigated up river to see the Kentucky Dam and then back down to see the State Penitentiary. I was surprised to see the State Penitentiary was a beautiful building on the water. The boating experience was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the tiny bird island and the tall river banks, but I would recommend another location, such as the Lake Barkley Marina.
Anywhere you choose to take a boat out at The Land Between the Lakes is sure to be a wonderful experience. Enjoy!

Are Captains Credentials Needed
If you opt for a traditional houseboat for your next boating vacation, then you wont need any prior experience to take on the captains duties.
