A proposed class action claims the labels of certain Banana Boat sunscreens have failed to disclose that the products contain benzene, a known human carcinogen.
The lawsuit is at least the second to be filed after analytical pharmacy Valisure filed a citizen petition asking the FDA to recall dozens of sunscreens that were found to contain benzene in levels known to be harmful to humans.
According to the lawsuit, defendants Energizer Holdings, Inc. Edgewell Personal Care Company Edgewell Personal Care Brands, LLC Edgewell Personal Care, LLC Playtex Products, Inc. and Sun Pharmaceuticals, LLC have violated state and federal law by failing to disclose on their products labeling the presence of benzene in the sunscreens.
Because Defendants did not disclose benzene, a known human carcinogen, may be present in the Sunscreen Product purchased by Plaintiff and the putative class members, the Sunscreen Product are adulterated and misbranded, the complaint alleges.
The lawsuit claims the Banana Boat sunscreens are unsuitable for human application given there is, according to the World Health Organization, no safe level of benzene exposure.

However, this particular one, Banana Boat Ultra Sport Clear Sunscreen Spray , SPF 30, ranks a 4 and is reef-friendly. The biggest no-no ingredient is added fragrance, which is why its not ranked better. A benefit is that you can likely find this in most drugstores.
The last product, also ranking a 2, is the Babyganics Sunscreen Stick, SPF 50+. It has no PABA, phthalates, parabens, fragrances, or nano-particles, is water resistant, never tested on animals, and is also reef-safe.
The Worst Kids Sunscreensbanana Boat
Banana Boat Baby Max Protect, SPF=100 for babies earned a place at the top of the list of the Environmental Working Groups Hall of Shame. Dont be fooled by the high SPF number. This sunscreen protects against UVB radiation but leaves babies skin exposed to UVA radiation that is known to cause aging and skin cancer. Yikes. It also contains a frightening long list of ingredients.
One ingredient that is of concern is oxybenzone which has a hazard score of 9. Among the concerns for oxybenzone are Developmental/reproductive toxicity, Violations, restrictions & warnings, Endocrine disruption, Allergies/immunotoxicity, Persistence and bioaccumulation, Enhanced skin absorption, Biochemical or cellular level changes. When I watched Toxic Childhood last week, the advice one doctor gave was Dont put anything on your skin that you wouldnt eat. Because the skin has no filter these toxins go directly into the bloodstream.

No matter how hard you try to avoid getting sunscreen near your eyes, its practically inevitable that a bit of sunscreen will eventually seep in there. And it can really sting. Most commonly, certain ingredients found in chemical sunscreens are to blame . Zinc oxide and titanium dioxidetwo active ingredients found in physical sunscreensare less likely to irritate your eyes. Face sunscreens are generally formulated to be less greasy and are therefore less likely to reach your eyes after you sweat or swim, but theyre not fail-safe. A May 2021 report from Valisure, an advocacy-focused online pharmacy that tests prescription drugs and over-the-counter products, raised alarm about the presence of benzene, a known carcinogen, in dozens of batches of commercially available sunscreens and after-sun skin-care products. Experts we spoke with acknowledged that the labs findings, while preliminary and not independently confirmed, are worthy of concern. We know that benzene can cause leukemia and other types of cancers, and the high levels detected in all these sunscreens is concerning and surprising, said Luoping Zhang, an adjunct professor of toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley. There is probably no safe level of benzene anywhere or in anything.
Valisure requested a recall of the contaminated batches” and that the “FDA better define limits for benzene contamination in drug and cosmetic products.
While the company did not test samples of all of the sunscreens we recommend in this guide, among those it did test, none were found to contain benzene. The Valisure study is a whistleblower event that helps things change and regulations to happen, said Akshay Talati, an independent cosmetic chemist who has worked with a variety of cosmetics companies, most recently LOreal.
An FDA spokesperson told Reuters that the agency will continue to monitor the sunscreen marketplace and manufacturing efforts to help ensure the availability ofsafe sunscreens for U.S. consumers.
What’s The Best Baby Sunscreen
When shopping for baby sunblock, look for a formula labeled broad-spectrum” that means it will protect against both UVB and UVA rays. The active ingredient list should contain only titanium dioxide or zinc oxide .
These ingredients are considered physical sunscreens, explains Marissa J. Perman, M.D., a pediatric dermatologist at the University of Philadelphia. That means when you apply them, they stay on the surface of the skin and are not absorbed.
A fact that might make you even more comfortable with the idea of putting physical sunscreens on your little one: Zinc is the same product found in many diaper creams, she says.
The AAP notes that sunscreens with the mineral ingredients zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are preferable to a chemical sunscreen. That said, they stress that any sunscreen is a far better choice than no sunscreen at all to protect babies from getting sunburned.
