Edgewell Personal Care Australia Pty Ltd is recalling all batches of the following ‘Banana Boat’ sunscreen sprays because benzene has been detected in 4 batches of the products supplied in Australia.

The three products being recalled are:

• Banana Boat Ultra Very High Protection Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+, AUST L 206508
• Banana Boat Simply Protect Kids Very High Protection Sunscreen Lotion Spray SPF 50+, AUST L 311003
• Banana Boat Dry Balance Very High Protection Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+, AUST L 342636.

Banana Boat Sunscreen And Uv Protection

Although Banana Boat sunscreen labels say they offer high protection against both UVA and UVB rays, they do not appear to be certified for UVA. Labels on some of the sunscreens claim to provide 96% protection for UVA/UVB. UVB perhaps, but certainly not UVA.In fact, criticisms have been leveled at Banana Boat for not providing high enough UVA protection from such organizations as the Environmental Working Group in their Annual Sunscreen Report. They report that “this product protects babies from UVB radiation and the sunburns it causes, but leaves them exposed to UVA radiation that penetrates deep into the skin.”This is of great concern to me because it is the UVA rays that are so very damaging. By protecting your child with the highest possible SPF you are shielding them from the UVB rays only.

If there is no balancing high UVA protection, you effectively invite UVA deep level damage. The high SPF means that you probably won’t get sunburnt so you’ll think you’ve done a good job with your sun protection, but in the meantime, the damage is done below the skin’s surface.

Coconut & Lemon Sandwich Cookies

Two different types of sunscreen aerosol sprays by Banana Boat have been recalled in New Zealand due to safety concerns over unexpected levels of benzene in some batches.

Banana Boat’s parent company Edgewell Personal Care announced the recall after consultation with the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia.

Batches of Banana Boat Simply Protect Kids Very High Protection Sunscreen Lotion Spray SPF 50+ and Banana Boat Dry Balance Very High Protection Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+ with an expiry date of 31st January 2024 or earlier have been pulled from shelves, and customers urged to stop using these items and dispose of them.

The issue was identified in product testing, and while the benzene in these sunscreen products at the levels detected would not be expected to cause adverse health effects, Edgewell Personal Care said an abundance of caution was being taken.

What Is Benzene And What Are The Risks

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, a substance that could potentially cause cancer depending on the level and extent of exposure. Benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreens but is suspected to be a contaminant from raw materials used in the product manufacture. The Therapeutic Goods Administration is working with sponsors to investigate the source of benzene.

They are calculated to ensure that an individuals’ excess cancer risk would not exceed 1 in 100,000 if that individual used the maximum recommended amount of the product every day of the year for 70 years.

The TGA laboratories recently completed product testing, which detected benzene at concentrations between 2.3 ppm and 5.2 ppm in four batches of the above products supplied in Australia. Exposure to benzene in these sunscreen products, at the levels detected, would not be expected to cause serious adverse health effects. However, to reduce the risk to consumers, Edgewell Personal Care is recalling all batches of the affected products supplied within Australia.
