Unique Tours And Cruises For Adventure On The Water

One of my familys favorite things about living on the West Coast is all the gorgeous bodies of water surrounding us everywhere we look, from plentiful lakes to stunning Puget Sound, the Salish Sea and the great Pacific Ocean beyond. What better way to take advantage of these natural wonders than to spend time on them? Warm summer months are the perfect time to enjoy a leisurely sail or boat ride. And luckily for us, theres no shortage of cool local water ride options to choose from no boating license required.

The following unique local boat tours, rentals and cruises are essential additions to your summer adventure bucket list!

San Juan Island Day Trip From Seattle

Cruise out of downtown Seattles Pier 69 in the morning and soak in breathtaking scenery on your journey from Seattle to Friday Harbor. Catch sight of the

Even for its size, Seattle is easy to get around. The Metro Transit buses are an extremely reliable and convenient way to get about town. You can also use the Link Light Rail that goes from the airport to downtown and areas beyond. There’s also the option of taxi cabs and rideshare services. The choice is entirely up to you.

You may have heard a little rumor about Seattle being, well, kind of rainy. Unfortunately, we can’t deny this, but we can tell you when to visit to get this fabulous city at its dryest. June through September is your best bet, and these months also offer the warmest daytime temperatures, as much as 75 F or more. October sees the cold set in and the rain get more frequent, and this fairly uninspiring weather carries on through winter.

Seattle has great dining and nightlife scenes, so you’ll need to pack a healthy apetite and a lot of energy. In more literal terms, though, we recommend you bring the following:

What Should We Bring

While the San Juan Islands have some of the best weather around in the Summer, we are still in the Pacific Northwest and you can always plan on it being about 10-15 degrees cooler out on the water. So, layered clothing is the key and remember you will be on a boat, so sensible shoes are best. Also, dont forget to bring a camera , binoculars , sunglasses, and sunscreen. Most importantly though, bring a fun attitude! This will make your whale watching trip all the more enjoyable.

This is a review for tours in Seattle, WA:

“The 1-hr boat tour around the Seattle Harbor was well done. The boat has a full bar and light snacks. The staff was very friendly and the narration along the tour was informative, engaging and funny. We experienced smooth waters and the catamaran provided comfortable seating and we felt safe and at ease, which added to the joy of the tour. The only thing that would have made the boat tour any better would have been marine life sightings. The critters were absent on this day. Obviously, a factor the tour operator has no control over.Highly recommend this experience to any visitor to this beautiful city.”

  • Is The Morning Tour Better Than The Afternoon Tour

We always like to say that no two whale watching tours are the same. That is the honest truth. It is hard to say whether the morning is better or the afternoon is better, because usually if we have whales in the area we will see them on both trips. However, there are days when the whales may not be found by the morning tour or they may be out of range for the afternoon tour. Mornings can be a little mellower out on the water, people wise. But, in the end there really isnt much difference between sightings in the morning or afternoon, the best way to decide is to look at your schedule and plan accordingly.

What Happens If We Don’t See Whales

Sneak Peek: Salish Sea Tours debuts brand new boats

Well, it doesnt happen very often, but dont panic if it does. Some of our best tours have been encounters with Porpoises, Harbor Seals, Bald Eagles, and Steller Sea Lions. Of course, we are always looking for whales, as well as other wildlife, during our trip and there are often times when we leave the dock without a whale report only to find some along the way.

With the best crew around, we strive to make every tour the very best it can be and if there are whales in the area we will make every effort to share them with you. And, dont forget that the beautiful island scenery alone is worth the price of the tour.

With that said, guest satisfaction is our primary goal. No one can control wildlife and weather. They are completely up to mother nature, and there are never any guarantees. However, in addition to all the other beautiful wildlife of the San Juan Islands, we want to give you every opportunity to experience the wonder of encountering and learning about whales in their natural environment. That is why, in the rare occurrence that you dont see whales on one of our tours, we happily invite you to come again on the boat tour for free. You will receive a voucher code after the tour good for the number of people in your party. Vouchers are not transferrable but have no expiration. This policy only applies to the boat tour portion of a flight package.

How Close Do You Get To The Whales

There is always an urge to experience the whales and wildlife as close as possible. However, we have to remember that we are viewing these animals in their environment and it is best to see how they live without our interference. With this in mind we operate under guidelines and regulations that are in place to help ensure that we dont change their behavior or interfere with their life cycles. Our guidelines change from year to year based upon the most recent scientific research. What you can expect is that we will not approach the whales within 200 yards in US waters and 200 meters in Canadian waters when we are viewing them. However, keep in mind that these distances on the water will still offer an excellent viewing experience when you are viewing a close to 30 ft long animal.

Sneak Peek: Salish Sea Tours Debuts Brand New Boats

During the summer, Seattle is usually a hotbed for tourism – but that’s of course taken a serious hit because of the health crisis.

One struggling spot includes Pier 57 on the waterfront, home to Miner’s Landing and the Seattle Great Wheel. And on top of the health crisis, the seawall also needs some emergency work done.

But when things are back to normal again, the people at Pier 57 have a new attraction in the works that will make a big splash. And we got a sneak peek.

You could say they are the latest one-two punch in the Puget Sound. Meet Orca One and Orca 2, the latest addition of Miner’s Landing at Pier 57. The Orcas are the headliners for the new Salish Sea Tours that will give locals and visitors a captivating and unique perspective of Seattle now and then, all while touring Elliott Bay.

“Weve got it set up with extra large windows so people can actually experience the tour from here,” said Brian Nichols, Director of Operations. “You know how our inclement weather here in Seattle can be, if its pouring rain you can still go on a really cool tour sitting in here.”

Stadium seats get everybody a spot on the boat that feels like first class. Every inch of the Orcas was thought out, and built in Bellingham. It took over a year to finish these beauties, the construction was a work of art. Even the engine room shines like a museum.

It’s a large part of the tour, as well.

Each Orca is 93 feet long, 26.5 feet wide and can comfortably hold 149 passengers.

What Is The Best Time Of Year To See Whales

Salish sea tour in Seattle Washington

The San Juan Islands is the best place to see Orca Whales, as well as Humpbacks and Minkes, in the world. Whales range through the Salish Sea the most between March and October, although we do have sightings throughout the year. Faster boats, flexible trip duration, and our departure location help ensure that our sightings are as high as, or higher than, any operator in the area.

You can expect to see Orca Whales on the vast majority of our tours, and when Orcas aren’t in the area we usually encounter Humpback Whales and Minke Whales. Keep in mind that the Orca Whales we see do travel completely out of the area to the Pacific Ocean from time to time throughout the season and that every year is different depending upon what is happening in the ecosystem.

Even the few tours that dont include whales are worthwhile with spectacular island scenery, Bald Eagles, Porpoises, Seals, Sea Lions, and lots of interesting sea birds.

    We Guarantee Youll See Whales

The Salish Sea is home to an astonishing variety of whales, including orcas, humpbacks, gray whales, and minke whales. With thousands of departures over 37 years, our local knowledge is unmatched. As a result, our success rate is the best in the industry. If you dont see whales on your whale watching tour, we will gladly give you a voucher for a cruise on a later date no questions, no hassles. Guarantee is not valid for split trips, specific whale species, or cash back.

Why Fly To San Juan Island To See Whales

The better question might be, why wouldn’t you? Nothing is quite like taking off from Seattle in a seaplane and flying over the Salish Sea. The spectacular 50 scenic flight culminates in the quaint town of Friday Harbor. The perfect place for a whale and wildlife adventure.

Besides the fact that the San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful places in the world, they also happen to be in the heart of whale territory in the Pacific Northwest. Your best opportunities for whale and the most diverse wildlife is in the San Juan Islands.
