How To Identify The Model Year Of A Yamaha Outboard

Finding the year your outboard motor was built may be as simple as looking at a document. For some motors, the clues are on the motor, waiting for you to decipher using a key word. For at least one, you have to ask the dealer, if you want more than a range of years in which that particular model of motor was produced, because neither the model number or the serial number will provide a clue.

Inspect the registration certificate issued by the state, if you live in a state that requires registration, or on the title, if you live in the states of Utah, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina, Oklahoma or Missouri. The model year or the date of manufacture is plainly displayed on both registration and title. If you own a Honda outboard, this may be one of the only two ways to find the information without contacting the Honda dealer.

Open your motor operator’s handbook and look for the information the dealer included about your motor. If you don’t have the motor operator’s manual that came with your motor when it was new, you must use another method.

Go to the motor and look on the motor’s swivel bracket for an embossed, metalized tag or plate that has the name of the motor’s manufacturer boldly stamped at its top. This manufacturer’s tag also shows the year the motor was built, or the model year on all motors except Honda.

Serial Number Search: Mercury Outboard Parts & Mercruiser Parts

Serial Numbers for Mercury Marine Outboards and Mercruiser Sterndrives are unique sets of numbers used to identify certain objects such as Marine Engines, Boats, Automobiles, Software, etc. In the case of Mercury Outboard Parts, Mercruiser Engine Parts, and Mercruiser Sterndrive parts it’s the Serial Number that’s used to identify the configuration of the Mercruiser Engine, Mercury Outboard or Mercruiser Sterndrive. For example if you own a 2003 Mercruiser 350 Mag MPI Sterndrive Engine and need to replace the Fuel Cooler the Mercruiser Serial Number is important because Mercruiser changed the design of the Fuel Cooler midway through that model year. Locating Serial and Model Information on an Outboard ...

Outboard boat engines, much like automobiles, have serial numbers assigned to them after production. Each engine maker uses a different placement point for these numbers and also use a different code to interpret the alpha-numeric cipher. To find the serial numbers on outboard engines, you need to search the shaft of the engine and under the cowling—the cover that rests over the engine itself.

Pull the boat’s shaft up and out of the water using either the power lift assist or by grabbing the cowling handle and lifting up and back toward the boat.

Inspect the entire shaft looking for a small set of etched numbers and letters or for a small metal plate riveted to the shaft. This is the boat engine’s serial number. Write down this number, or take a picture of it using the digital camera.

Open the engine’s cowling and look at the engine block or on the inside of the cowling for the serial number if it’s not on the shaft.

Determine the make of the engine by looking for a name such as Mercury, Evinrude or Johnson, to name but a few.

Your marine engine serial number is a very important piece of information youll need whenever you arrange for service or purchase parts.

In this Mercury Quick Tip, well show you how to find the engine data tag where the engine serial is located so you can reference it any time you need it. For engines of 8hp and higher, the serial number tag can be found on the right side halfway down the transom assembly, just below the engines powerhead. What About My Engine

The Coast Guard has no model-year regulations for outboard engines, making it harder for consumers to determine the year in which they were built. In 2007, Yamaha stopped designating model years for its outboard engines entirely. Though the reasoning is sound, it creates a challenge for consumers.

Unlike cars, in which engines are built into the product, a selection of engines usually can be fitted on outboard boats. Dealers have struggled for years to make sure that the engines bought from an engine manufacturer during one year get sold that same year on new boats.

If a boat on the showroom floor comes with a 200-hp engine but a buyer wants a 250-hp engine, the dealer may have to order the bigger engine and keep the smaller one in stock. If it takes a couple of years to finally sell that 200-hp engine, a buyer may be reluctant to buy it if the model year isn’t current, and the dealer may have to subsequently discount it. Buyers typically want a 2017 engine, for example, on their 2017 boat.

What’s considered an upgrade? In the end, the engine manufacturer gets to decide what it is and when there’s enough of one to create a new model. Fortunately, dealers usually know which engines in their stock have the most current changes, and you should ask before buying.

Remove the cowling by lifting the release levers found on each side or front and rear of the outboard to find the core plug.

What About A Mercruiser Serial Number

On a Mercruiser sterndrive or inboard engine, typically, the tag is on the block near the starter. But, sometimes, its down by the starter on the engine block, near the flywheel, or on the flame arrestor.

All too often, the ESN tag on a Mercruiser is not the easiest to find, so definitely take a picture and save it on your cell phone.
