History Of Santa Catalina Island
Inhabited since 7000 BC by the Tongva people, and claimed by the Spanish, the Island was renamed after it was re-discovered on Saint Catherines name day. The Spanish then proceeded to transfer natives to the mainland to work on the missions. With limited militia the Spanish were unable to monitor the island and it became frequented by riff raff from around the world, including trappers and pirates.
Unfortunately, he defaulted on the loan and it was then sold to the famous banning family 1891. The banning brothers completed the first resort and it was a great success until a majority of the property was burned down in 1915. The cost to rebuild in combination with the lack of tourism due to WWI forced the family to sell their majority ownership to the Wrigley Family.
William Wrigley, Jr. took Catalina to the next level. Building an island infrastructure in addition to tourist attractions such as the iconic casino. In 1972, Philip Wrigley, established the Catalina Island Conservancy to protect and restore Santa Catalina Island. By 1975, The Wrigleys had deeded 88% of the island to the conservancy. As you make your way onto the ferry, you will be directed to store your luggage inside. I thought there was going to be a designated storage area below the deck, but it was simply in the same room where the passengers sat. There is a large open space towards the back of the seating area and this where the staff directed us to place our luggage.

Catalina Ferries are high-speed catamarans and mono-hulled boats with most service provided by two companies: Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer. You can catch a Catalina ferry from several locations.
- Long Beach:Catalina Express boats leave daily to Avalon from Catalina Landing in downtown Long Beach. The location has plenty of nearby paid parking, and the trip takes about an hour.
- San Pedro: Catalina Express goes from San Pedro to Avalon or Two Harbors. Their schedule varies by season, and they don’t run every day on the off-season. The departure point is Berth 95 at the Sea/Air terminal, near the cruise ship terminals.
