Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. So how have Rick and Steve managed, both individually and as 50/50 partners, to start, acquire, and run so many successful businesses? Hard work, of course. But thats the answer everybody gives. Here are five more core values the men say drive their success:
HONESTY – Rick explains they emphasize this value for every employee of every one of their businesses. There is no need to ever lie to a customer for anything, he said. If you dont know the answer, show them the courtesy to find out the right answer and give it to them.
SUPPLY – Few things are worse for the bottom line than not having enough inventory. Rick and Steves marine businesses stock as many boats as they feel the market will stand, and then focus on quick turnover.
LOVE – We only get into lines that were sold on, Rick said. Its clear this is a major factor for these two. They know not all boats are created equal, and they know boaters know it, too. Customer brand loyalty is common in auto sales its even more serious in boat sales.
REPUTATION – People that have worked for us, a lot of ems been there for quite awhile, Steve says in his Midwestern drawl. What we say were gonna do, we end up doing do what you say and say what youre gonna do I think that has followed us around the Lake.

We purchased our 2012 Four Winns boat in Feb 2017. After a couple of rather difficult purchases in the O’Fallon, IL area over the past few years I was very leery of getting a fair deal on a boat purchase. I have to say though, I was pleasantly surprised by the terrific service and “fair deal” I received from Tim. Very straight forward approach, didn’t over promise but delivered everything we agreed upon. We have now upgraded to a larger boat that has given our family some great memories in the Ozarks. If you want a “fair deal”, I highly recommend these folks.

On Labor Day weekend, I receive a call from my boss’s brother and says his boat is overheating. He asked who to call on a Saturday afternoon. I hang up and call Rome Mason. Rome tells me he can have a mechanic there, with the parts, within the hour. In an hour and a half the water pump and new serpentine belt is replaced and he is back on the water ecstatically happy. Big Thunder Marine Named Cigarette Dealer At Lake Of The Ozarks
In a move that still has the ground shaking in Osage Beach, Mo., Cigarette Racing Team has named Big Thunder Marine as its new dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks. The news was first reported by Speedboat magazine this morning.
There were a number of factors involved in the decision, both our strengths and other peoples weaknesses, said Fred Ross, who owns Big Thunder Marine as well as the Fountain Powerboats, Donzi Marine and Baja Marine powerboat brands. Cigarette looked around and saw we were their best option for maximum growth. Our goals for the future are aligned.

A full-service dealership with multiple locations at the Lake of the Ozarks, Big Thunder Marine carries the Fountain, Donzi and Baja lines in addition to its pontoon and tow-boat lines. Ross said the addition of Cigarette is a complementrather than competitionfor its current high-performance powerboat lines.
We see this over and over again, Ross explained. Usually, Cigarette guys want Cigarettes and Fountain guys want Fountains. There is very little crossover. They are two different brands with two different price points. Cigarette is a very niche brand that only builds so many boats a year. That said, I could not be more proud of our Fountain brand.
