Ways You Can Get Up On A Wakesurf Board
- While laying on it, try getting up as if its a knee board. Slowly take one hand off the rope. Then, pull up and put forward the foot that the hand is still holding on to the rope. With the other hand laid low to stabilize you, gradually get up.
- Start by sitting on the surfboard in a straddling position with your feet moved to the side. Once there is tension, move your feet to the front of the board and gradually stand up.
- With the surfboard being perpendicular to your boat, lay behind it. Once there is tension, the rope will snap and cause the board to get you on your feet. You will then pop up before turning sideways. This pattern is a little complicated and is best suited for advanced users.

To clear things up quickly, you should only wakesurf behind a boat that is inboard V-drive or inboard direct drive. The reason is that the propeller is usually found underneath the boat. That way, the rider is less likely to come in contact with it when wakesurfing.
Never wakesurf behind a boat with and outboard or I/O motor. Many have sustained serious injuries, and in worst cases, some lost their lives as a result of surfing behind such boats with exposed propellers.

Boat speed for wakesurfing will vary with the make and model of boat, and the amount of ballast, but usually good waves form around 10 mph and professional surfers will cap out around 12.5. Skim-style boards perform best at about 1.5 mph slower than surf-style boards. When pulling up a wakesurfer, you should accelerate even slower than when pulling a wakeboarder. You want to start slow and make small incremental increases. Ideally, to start, you want a thigh-high wave with a clean face and no whitewater on the lip.
Safe Surfing Behind An Outdrive
In spite of the above facts, youve probably often heard people mentioning how they wakesurf behind their outboard or stern drive boat. You can indeed ride a surfboard behind an outdrive safely using a tow rope.
Wakesurfing with a rope is done at a distance and rope length similar to wakeboarding, making it unlikely for you to ride the wave down into the outboards prop.
Purists will argue this isnt real wakesurfing, as the latter involves riding the wave without a rope. Some people call this skurfing. Whatever the name, this variant lets you surf an outboard wave without risking a limb.
The main difference with wakeboarding is that youre riding a surfboard without straps or bindings, which also makes it much more challenging to get up at first.
Boarders typically use a 15 to 20 feet rope for wakesurfing this still feels pretty close to the boat if youre used to wakeboarding.
Another difference with wakeboarding is that wakesurfing is done at slower speeds, typically 10-14 mph , so falling is usually not an issue.
You can have a lot of fun on a wakesurf riding up and down the wake and cutting back and forth close to the wake on a surfboard, pulling 180s and 360s. Never let go of the rope or try to pull up closer to the boat, though, to avoid any risk of hitting the prop.

How To Ballast My Boat For Wakesurfing
Theres no replacement for displacement. Most boats dont come setup great for surfing as they are initially designed for wakeboarding and skiing. The reality is you need to add weight and a fair amount of it to get surfing. DELTA does its job by shaping the wake, but you still need ballast to give the wake enough energy or push to surf on comfortably.
For a 21-23 foot boat, we usually see people running with around 700 lbs in each rear corner and 850-1000 lbs in the center/front of the boat. Also, people count as ballast too! Although these are very generic numbers, we generally say we want to achieve a 60/40 split of weight in the boat .
It is essential to understand that it is also very possible to add too much weight when this happens all you will achieve is a ton of turbulent whitewash.

Wake Size + Wake Shape = Wake Quality
Adding additional weight to your boat, whether its in the form of ballast, people, or even gas in the fuel tank makes the boat sit lower in the water. This means the hull is displacing more water, which will result in a larger wake as the boat drives though the water. Your requirements for wake size will depend on several factors:
-Desired wake size: just how big do you want the wake to be?
-Space requirements: how much room are you willing to give up in the boat for ballast?
-Comfort level: how much ballast are you willing to run in the boat?
-Activity: are you primarily wakeboarding, surfing, or both?
The bigger you want your wake, the more hull displacement, and therefore additional ballast you need for your boat. Anywhere you place additional weight in the boat will cause an increase in the displacement of the hull in the water. To increase the wake’s size, the location of the ballast is completely trivial. Place it anywhere you want.
The shape of the wake is equally important and often ignored. Whereas ballast location in the boat plays no role in determining the size of the wake, wake shape is completely dependent upon where the weight is placed throughout your boat. In this article, we are going to talk about how to weight a wakesurfing boat, how to use ballast bags, where to place passengers, and gear that can be used to set up the boat.
Weight a Monterey Boat for Wakesurfing
Wakesurfing, is obviously, all about constructing the perfect wake with the vessel. The Monterey wakesurfing boats are built to do this with a proper hull design that displaces water, so the ideal wake is produced. As water replaces that displaced water, the endless wave moves towards the vessel giving the wakesurfer non-stop wave action.
When more weight is placed at the bow of the vessel, the boat creates a shorter wake height, but a lengthier wake overall. And, the opposite is true. When more weight is placed in the aft of the vessel, the wake height will be greater, and the wake length will decrease. In order to increase the wake side to side, more weight will be needed on each side of the boat.

Types Of Boats Suitable For Wakesurfing
Wakesurfing is similar to wakeboarding in that they both involve riding a board behind a motorboat. In wakesurfing, however, the ultimate goal is to let go of the rope and freely surf the boats wave, gaining enough speed in the wake to follow the boat without any pull.
Surfing the boats wake without towing requires staying very close to the boats stern, typically at a 3 to 6-foot distance. Therefore, if the boat has a visible propeller out its back, youre exposing yourself to serious or even deadly injury!
Inboard boats, including direct drives and V-drives, are the only types of boats you can safely wakesurf behind. In both these types of boats, the engine and drive unit are placed inside the boat, and the propeller comes out under the hull in front of the transom.
Inboard direct drive
In these types of boats, hitting the propeller is unlikely as it would involve reaching further forward and a few feet under the boat to get to the prop from the riding position.
Outboard boats and stern drives , on the hand, are not suitable for wakesurfing as in these types of installations, the propeller and exhaust stick out the back of the boat and are thus very close to the wakesurfer.
In a stern drive, while the engine itself is mounted inside the hull, the drive unit and the propeller are outside the back of the hull and attached through the ransom.

This is an intermediate trick that will help you generate speed and give you bounce. Once you master this art, then youll be able to do 180s, 360s and other tricks.
Other Important Boat Features For Wakesurfing
As mentioned, with an outdrive type boat, its hard to create a strong enough wave to be able to ride without rope at a safe distance, even if you add a lot of ballast, and ride a bigger longboard.
Good wakesurfing requires a good size wave. For an outdrive to achieve that, the boat should not be planing and maintain its bow really high, affecting the visibility and maneuverability for the driver.
A direct drive or V-drive boat is required for creating such a big wave right behind the boat, one that can be ridden relatively safely.
Besides being designed as an inboard drive, a good wakesurfing boat typically has a flat bottom stern, deep and heavily ballasted so as to dig hard into the water and produce a big wake.
It will also generally have an extended gate on the transom, and tanks and bladders for pumping water aboard. This adds weight to the stern and on one side of the hull to create a bigger wake and skew it to the side where the wakesurfer rides.
Let alone the risks mentioned earlier, outdrive boats typically have standard V-shaped hulls which dont create the kind of wave needed for good wakesurfing, A surf gate would need to be added as well as ballast tanks in the back and on one side to throw a bigger wake.
