Let me introduce you to Lola! Shes the 1958 Lone Star Meteor amongst the fleet of retro boats at Retro Boat Rentals in Austin, Texas who took my friends and I out onto Lady Bird Lake last month for a truly unique and instagrammable experience.

I actually could not control myself from waving at the kayakers, boaters and paddle boarders we passed. I was thriving off the good attention. I mean how could they not stare? She is a total showstopper!

We decided to dress for the part. I wore a thrifted yellow dress with retro red flowers, my best boating hat and of course my white western boats to commemorate the only state that could ever have such an instagrammable place to be at.

And obviously we also came prepared with snacks and drinks. We just ran into a Trader Joes to ensure we could also get a french baguette, because THAT was the vibe. Little did we know that Altas, above the boathouse, would be open with delicious pre boat ride bites, drinks and coffee!

We were reasonably nervous considering that Lola is a true gem, but with top speeds of a cruising 4 mph and GREAT instructions, theres no need to worry.

Lake Austin is a part of the Colorado River. It begins below Mansfield Dam and is fed by the outflow of Lake Travis. The lake meanders generally from northwest to southeast, with few significant tributaries. The largest being Bull Creek, entering near the Pennybacker Bridge. Its outflow through Tom Miller Dam then becomes the principal inflow for Lady Bird Lake. Lake Austin is maintained as a constant-level lake by releases of water from Lake Travis upstream.

Fun And Relaxing Day On Lady Bird Lake In Our Electric Boat

My husband and I rented an electric boat from Austin Sailboat Rentals and enjoyed a relaxing time cruising around Lady Bird Lake for a few hours. The location is easy to get to with plenty of available parking, so convenience is one of the perks. Jim and Ginny are both very pleasant and helpful. They let us reserve ahead of time and were ready for us when we arrived. The views of the city from the water are unique and offer a special experience while in Austin.Austin Sailboat Rentals has a nice selection of boats, which is always a good sign. All the equipment was clean and well maintained. We really enjoyed the electric boat and will definitely be back to rent that again. The electric boat doesn’t go super fast, but there is no need for speed. It was fairly windy while we were out, yet our boat remained steady and comfortable. The electric boat comes with a shade cover, so you get to enjoy the sun without baking in it. If you plan to head towards downtown, then just keep in mind it will take some extra time fighting the current and wind back to shore. It was definitely nice to be out on the water in the electric boat and Austin Sailboat Rentals will be our go-to spot for when we want to spend time on Lady Bird Lake!! For written reference, our boundary line is the First Street Bridge. Boats will not be permitted to go to the west of that marker.

An Experience Above The Rest

Located on the west bank of Barton Creek, where the cold waters of Barton Springs Pool meet the Colorado River, Barton Creek is the perfect backdrop to begin your canoeing adventure.

You can either hike your way into the site, or park at the main Zilker Park area by the Pool and walk down the set of stairs to the left. I personally like to go on a small hike in, before going for a spin on the water. When you arrive, youll notice they dont have a fancy dock. Only the shore and the boats. I find this adds to the experience, allowing you to connect with nature.

As you climb into the canoe and glide down the creek, the big city traffic noises will start to fade away. Youll pass by turtles sunning themselves on logs as you make your way toward Lou Neff Point. As you approach, pause for a moment and prepare to take in one of the best views of Austins ever changing skyline. And its at that moment youll feel it. The magical draw of the city that calls to many of us like Sirens.

From there, there are no rules as to how to enjoy the river. I sometimes like to go toward the city and imagine what the thousands of people above me are doing. But most of the time I like to head west of the city and get lost in mother natures beauty.
