    How To Register A Boat

So you’ve finally purchased the boat of your dreams. Now, what’s the next step? A good place to start is with boat registration. Registering a boat is required by lawmuch like with a carand the rules and guidelines for how this process is done and what kind of watercraft must be registered are dictated by the state in which the vessel will regularly operate .

Here’s the basic steps to follow when registering a boat:

  • Research the boat registration requirements in your state.
  • Complete a registration formeither online, through the mail, or in person.
  • Provide proof of ownershipincluding a title and/or bill of sale.
  • Pay the registration fee, which varies by state and the size of the vessel.
  • Be conscious of the expiration date and apply for renewal.
  • Other Boat Titling Info

If you sell a titled boat must complete the transfer section on the back of the title before providing the title to the buyer. To complete the transfer, the buyer must take the title to a title office.

Be aware that some boats that require titling may not have required a title at their time of purchase. However, before selling a used boat, the boat owner must obtain a title from a title office, if a title is now required for the type of boat.

    These boat types include:

    • Boats or outboard engines that were acquired before January 1, 1964.
    • Boats under 14 feet in length with a permanently attached, mechanical engine of 10 horsepower or greater and purchased on or before January 1, 2000.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Boat Registered

The process can be pretty quick as long as you have all the documents requested by the DMV.

How long you wait at the DMV is another story, though and thats not really up to you.

But, once you do submit everything to the DMV, they will process the information, and you should receive your registration numbers and validation sticker generally within a couple of weeks.

In other words, its a fairly simple process and shouldnt take much time at all.

Applying your Kentucky Boat License and Stickers

To acquire registration or title for a vessel or outboard motor with a serial number that has been altered, defaced, mutilated or removed, a sworn statement must be filed with TPWD describing the vessel or outboard motor, providing proof of legal ownership, and stating the reason for the destruction, removal, alteration or defacement of the number. This statement must be accompanied by a fee of $25.00 and an inspection certificate from a game warden stating the vessel or outboard motor has been inspected. This section does not apply to USCG Documented vessels.

How To Know If My Boat Is Registered

If you own a car, you already know that it must be registered including a license plate and validation sticker to operate it legally.

Well, a boat is really no different: it usually needs to be properly registered with your state to operate on public waters legally.

Whether youre buying a new boat or arent too familiar with the one you own, it is essential to make sure that the vessel is registered and updated.

So, how do you know if your boat is registered and what steps should be taken next?

What Do The Registration Numbers Mean

So your boat now has its new registration number and sticker, but what do these numbers mean?

Its important to note that sometimes youll see two different sets of numbers on a boat: the hull identification number and the registration number. Its important not to get these confused.

The HIN is the same as a car or trucks VIN and acts as a form of identification by the manufacturer. This will not have the validation sticker next to it.

The number that has a sticker next to it is the registration number, which is more important.

The registration number usually begins with your states abbreviation and is followed by a random set of numbers and letters.

For example, if you live in Florida, the registration number might look something like this:

    • FL 1234 YZ

Again, this serves as a license plate for the boat and shows that you have registered the vessel for use on approved waterways.

What Can Happen If The Boat Is Not Registered

In most cases, an unregistered boat cannot be legally operated in public waters. Period.

A boat without a registration number is like a car without a license plate: without one, local authorities have no way to know if the operator owns the vessel.

For all they know, the boat was stolen by the operator.

If the owner is caught navigating waters without a boat registration, theres no doubt that the local authorities will take strict action.
