Banana Boat Sunscreen Recalled Due To Benzene

Banana Boat sunscreen recall

MONDAY, Aug. 1, 2022 Edgewell Personal Care Co. has recalled three batches of its Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 because trace levels of benzene were found in some samples during an internal review. Though this sunscreen product is not meant to contain benzene, it may have come from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.

The recall is voluntary, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of it, the company said. Specific batches are affected by the recall, which does not apply to other batches of the product. No other Banana Boat products are part of the recall. The products are packaged in aerosol cans and were distributed throughout the United States to retailers and online. Retailers have been alerted to the recall.

Banana Boat said it will reimburse consumers who have purchased a recalled product. Consumers can determine whether their cans of sunscreen have been recalled by looking for the lot codes on the bottom of the can and comparing them to the recalled product list.

Edgewell said it has not received any reports of adverse events and noted that benzene is in the environment and humans are exposed to it regularly from multiple sources.

Information is also available online at www.bananaboat.com. Consumers should contact their physician or health care provider if they have any questions or concerns or have experienced any problems related to using these aerosol sunscreen products.

The Food and Drug Administration recalls a particular Banana Boat sunscreen because it contains a chemical that might cause cancer.

Edgewell Personal Care Company, the parent company of Banana Boat, has voluntarily recalled three lots of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 after an internal examination revealed some samples contained trace amounts of benzene. The analysis revealed that “unexpected quantities of benzene came from the propellant that shoots the product out of the can,” the company claimed. However, benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products.

They are as follows:

· SPF 30 hair and scalp spray by Banana Boat, six oz., lot code 20016AF, expiration date December 2022.

Banana Boat Voluntarily Recalls Sunscreen Due To Harmful Chemical

If you have any fun summer outings coming up, you may want to check your products before lathering yourself with sunscreen.

While sunscreen is an important part of keeping yourself safe during the summer months, Edgewell Personal Care Company has announced a voluntary recall of several of its popular products.

“We know that you love our products, and we are conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution,” read a statement on the company’s website.

The nationwide recall was issued after unexpected trace levels of benzene were found during an internal review. The CDC notes that long-term exposure to benzene, a human carcinogen, can cause harmful effects on bone marrow and decrease red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.

The press release assures that benzene is not an ingredient in the products but was found in some samples due to the propellant that sprays the sunscreen out of its can.

Edgewell Personal Care Company issued a recall Friday for three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp sunscreen sprays after an internal review of product samples found traces of benzene.

Benzene is a human carcinogen that can lead to leukemia, blood cancer in bone marrow, and other blood disorders. People typically are exposed to the chemical in their environment through skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion.

The chemical is not an ingredient in the sunscreen spray, but the FDA said that unexpected levels of benzene came out of the spray bottles propellant.

As of this report, Edgewater said it has not learned of any illnesses related to the presence of benzene in their products nor does the FDA believe exposure to the benzene in the sprays could be particularly dangerous.

Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences according to an independent health assessment using established exposure modeling guidelines, the FDA advisory said.

However, the FDA said that if you have the affected product, stop using it and throw it out.
