How Much Does Boat Storage Cost

Is Rv And Boat Storage Secure

An in Depth Look at the Cost to Owning an Offshore Boat

In addition to how much space youll need and the type of storage options any facility has to offer, you should pay special attention to what security features are provided for your RV or boat. Site security is a variable you cannot afford to ignore. Paying more for a secure facility vs paying less for a facility with poor or no security, might end up costing you more in the long run, if your RV or boat is vandalized, damaged, or parts and accessories are stolen.

Even facilities with good security procedure, like requiring the use of private entry codes to access the locked storage lot, are still accessible to many renters 24/7 which means dozens of people possess the codes to enter the property. Most facilities keep a record of the codes used to access their secure spaces, so if some misconduct does occurs, they can provide information to investigators, but that might not be enough.

A lifetime ago, I was a police officer, and I handled a few thefts at RV storage lots. Typically, RV owners would go to the lot to pick up their rig and discover that their house batteries or tires had been stripped from their rig. These were not infrequent events. The lots where we had the most thefts, did not have cameras or anyone onsite, so thieves could pilferage other peoples RVs virtually undetected.

Therefore, with regard to security, vehicle owners have some responsibilities to augment the security offered by the facility.

Average Price For Rv And Boat Storage

Its hard to make an apples to apples comparison because some prices are for a contractual time period of 3 or 6 months, other prices are based on a monthly calculation, the sizes of spaces are different, and some of the prices are for heated indoor storage while other prices are for outdoor storage spaces.

However, you will see that prices are vastly different some are as low as $45 per month, others as high as $250 per month. The prices in Hawaii, Utah, and Colorado stood out as high-priced options. Louisiana, Idaho, Kansas, and New Jersey stood out for their low-priced storage fees.

The average storage fee calculated by Sparefoot.com across all sizes and types is $130.80 for monthly storage, but if you calculate the average price for only the largest spaces that monthly average climbs up to $244.44.

For example, check out this list of storage spaces and prices from Indoor RV Storage in California:

Where your storage facility is located will make a huge difference in the cost. How close and convenient the facility is to your home may also impact the cost. The type of storage you want for your vehicle or vessel will also play a part, and the security and extra services will finally determine how much your storage preferences will cost.

Preparing Your Boat For Winter Or Long

If you live in an area of the country where the weather gets cold from October through April, its important to winterize your boat before putting it into long-term storage. This preparation can also apply to boat owners in warmer locations who plan to use outdoor boat storage for extended periods of time. By preparing your boat for storage, you can avoid damages to the boats internal or external components.

The Location Of The Boat

How Much Does It Cost to Winterize a Boat?

Some areas of the world are more dangerous to boat in than other areas. The insurance plan you get will reflect this reality.

For instance, a person using their boat off the coast of Alaska is far more likely to suffer damage to their boat than someone who uses their boat in a sheltered inlet in New Jersey.

Even the areas that the boat will be driven through can change the cost of insurance. For example, a boat owner in Philadelphia who uses their boat in New Jersey will have to drive through the city to get to their destination.

This increases the chances that the boat will be in an auto accident and thus increases insurance costs.

Typical Boat Insurances Cost Examples

As we will see in a second, many factors go into boat insurance, so absolutely knowing the costs ahead of time isnt possible.

However, you can estimate annual costs based on 1.5% of the boats value.

So a $100,000.00 boat should have an annual insurance cost of $1,500.00. Individual factors will come into play, but, in general, the 1.5% rule is reasonably accurate for estimation.

However, here are a few basic examples I found from other boaters around the web:

2003 Scout 242 Abaco with a 225 HP Yamaha motor in Northern California. Hull value of $70,000.00. The owner has full coverage and is paying $658.00 a year for insurance.

1963 Bertram 25 with two 135 HP motors on Orange Beach, Alabama. The value is $55,000.00, and the owner is paying $583.00 annually.

2008 MayCraft 2000cc with a replacement value of $26,000.00. The boat is located in Delaware, and the owner is paying $348.00 a year.

For boaters up north, winterizing is a topic that commands more attention than we will give it in this article, but its worth mentioning at a high level. When the boating season winds down up north, there are crucial considerations such as whether to remove your boat from the water, winterizing the vessel and its various systems and finally where to store the boat. For some, this means indoor, climate-controlled storage . For others, it means going through a full process to protect the boat being stored outside. Shrink wrapping, winterizing the engine, taking care of the fuel and battery systems and more are all considerations that must be made. If youre a new boat owner, its best to lean on a professional to ensure your boat is properly cared for as you approach the winter season.

    Towers Fly Bridges Masts

Then you gotta think about all the stuff on top of your boat. It only makes sense that a boat with a T-top will need extra material and work to get wrapped up, compared to a speedboat that has everything non-aerodynamic ‘shaved off’.

The same goes for a mast. Although you won’t be shrink-wrapping the whole thing from the bottom all the way to the mast top, the wrap has to go around the mast bottom and that is more work than if the mast was not there. If you take your mast down, you don’t have to worry about a price increase, but if you leave it up, add around 2 or 3 dollars extra per foot.

What To Look For In A Storage Facility

The facility and staff that you entrust your boat to is an important consideration. As such, here are a few tips on what to look for in a boat storage facility:

    • Have a critical eye when driving up to the marina or storage facility. Is the area clean and landscaped? How professional are the staff and management?
    • What are the security procedures of the facility? Is the property gated? Are security cameras present? Ask about any potential recent security issues.
    • What are the steps and procedures in the event of a serious storm or hurricane? Should the facility enter the path of a NOAA hurricane forecast, what are the procedures in place?
    • If utilizing high and dry storage, is it possible to have the boat cleaned from time to time?
    • What amenities are available for slips ?
    • Are the personnel insured and bonded?

How Much Does It Cost To Shrink Wrap A Boat

When the boating season comes to a close, and the weather takes a turn for the cooler, winterizing your boat is an essential part of taking care of it for the season. Between fuel stabilizing, antifreeze, and storage, there’s a lot to take care of before the winter rolls around and starts to impact your boat. But what about shrink wrapping?

While it can be simple to buy a boat cover or to find storage for your ship, shrink wrapping provides an alternative option. The process involves setting a polyethylene material around your boat, which shrinks when exposed to extreme heat to form an airtight seal to withstand the elements and prevent UV damage.

But how much does it cost to shrink wrap a boat? And is it worth the investment?

Storage Unit Size For Kayaks And Canoes

How Much Does A Pontoon Boat Cost In My Opinion

A single kayak or canoe can fit in the smallest storage units, like the 15×20 unit required for a jet ski. However, since kayaks and canoes are designed for only one or two users, multiple vessels are often stored together. For proper kayak and canoe storage, a stand is typically recommended. This helps mitigate the risk of hull damage during long-term storage. Indoor storage is also advised to avoid the damage caused by UV rays. When deciding where to store your kayak or canoe, remember to measure adequate space for stands and temperature control to avoid damage.

    Construct The Right Layout

You may want to offer a variety of storage units in your facility. Most renters will want an enclosed unit for RV and boat storage. Enclosed units offer more security and sun & weather protection than open storage spaces or canopy spaces.

When you offer more than one type of space, the layout of your facility should make it easy to get from one section of units to another. The units should also be built on either side of any established drives so that you maximize the use of the roadways. If you have a main office on-site, it should be clearly marked and easy to access as soon as a customer drives up to your storage lot.

Layout considerations also include the exits and entrances. You may need to work with the city to create or change the entrances to accommodate the size of the RVs and trailers. In addition, the adjacent streets must be able to handle vehicles of such size turning in and out of your parking lot. You also need to factor in fire codes when it comes to spaces between buildings, and the necessary hydrants or fire sprinkler systems in your buildings.

The Cost Of Diy Winterizing A Boat

If you consider yourself a handy-man or youre prepared to get your hands dirty to cut some costs, then it may be a good idea to winterize your boat yourself.

There is a significant cost difference between hiring someone else to winterize your boat and doing it yourself. Ill go into more detail on the pricing, later in the guide.

It may also come as a surprise to some that it is usually quicker to winterize your boat yourself rather than having someone else do it. DIY winterization can be done within an hour. Taking your boat to a shop or marina could take a couple of hours.

Winterizing your boat, yourself may take over an hour your first time however I can assure you that youll get more efficient and will get your timing down to under an hour in the following years.
