If you know youre more likely to use a spray, Banana Boat Sport Performance Clear UltraMist Sunscreen SPF 100 is the easiest to apply liberally of the nine spray sunscreens we tested. Although most spray sunscreens feel similar, some testers reported liking the feel of the Sport Performance Clear UltraMist formula best for being less greasy than others, and rated its typical sunscreen scent just fine. Banana Boat Sport Performance Clear UltraMist is also less expensive than most other sprays we considered.

The downside of spray sunscreens is that they are quite a bit more expensive than lotions, especially when you consider that some of that spray never reaches your skin. If youre using a bottle of spray correctlythat is, youre applying and reapplying the recommended amount and rubbing it into your skinone person could use up an entire bottle in a single day at the beach.

The Banana Boat spray bottle itself was the best we tested. The nozzle produced a stream of mist that was less aerated and more concentrated than with many of the other sunscreens we tested, meaning more sunscreen should end up on your skin. The bottle has a groove near the top, so its easy to hold even when your hands are slippery.

The active ingredients are avobenzone , homosalate , octisalate , octocrylene , and oxybenzone .

Who This Is For

Sunscreen is for everyone over 6 months of age, including people with dark skin. Just because some cultures dont have a longstanding history of wearing sunscreen doesnt mean there cant be a benefit from wearing it, said Dr. Nambudiri. Darker-skinned people can absolutely get skin cancer as well as other skin problems caused by UV ray damage. Applied properly, sunscreen lowers your risk of skin cancer and helps prevent wrinkles its arguably the most effective anti-aging product available. Youre getting hit by a fair amount of the suns rays every day, even overcast ones, unless you are a spelunker, dermatologist Rachel Herschenfeld told us. I put it on every single day, she said. I will leave the house in smelly workout wear, but I never leave the house without my sunscreen.

Every single dermatologist we spoke with mentioned that avoiding the sunplus wearing protective clothing and/or sunscreen when you cantis the best way to protect yourself from potentially harmful ultraviolet radiation. When sun abstinence is not an option, covering up is ideal, said cancer educator Lisa Quale: Theres no user error.

Because bundling up in the shade isnt always practical, everyone should be using sunscreen as a second line of defense.

Which Products Were Not Recalled

Samples of Eco Formula Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, Advanced After-Sun Gel by Sun Burst, Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 by SunBurnt, Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 by Goodsense, Ultimate Sheer Sunscreen Lotion SPF 70 by TopCare Everyday, and UV Aero Broad-Spectrum Full-Body Sunscreen Spray, SPF 45 by EltaMD all tested for benzene at levels of 2 parts per million or higher.

Samples of three Banana Boat products also contained levels of benzene at those levels: Kids Max Protect & Play Sunscreen C-Spray SPF 100, UltraMist Deep Tanning Dry Oil Continuous Clear Spray SPF 4 and Ultra Sport Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 100.

To date,CNN was not able to verify that any of these products have been recalled followingValisure’srequest to that effect to the FDA.

The sunscreens tested by Valisurewere only a tiny sample of the more than 11,000 registered sun care products on the market.

The Personal Care Products Council, an industry association, said its members were “firmly committed” to providing products with “ingredients that have been thoroughly tested for safety and follow the requirements of the law.”

“We are aware of the study reporting the presence of benzene in some of the sunscreen products tested,” the council said in a statement. “There is nothing more important than safety. If our consumers can’t believe in a product or rely on it to do what it says, then nothing else matters.”

How Can I Tell If My Sunscreen Is Contaminated

Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen, Active Dry ...

Because the contamination was sporadic and likely occurred accidentally, there is no way for consumers to look at a label and choose a product without benzene, Faber said.

“Sadly, consumers are screwed. There’s no way to shop around this problem,” Faber said, adding that consumers can petition for new regulations to more thoroughly test consumer care products for toxins and contaminants.

“People can tell the FDA to require over-the-counter sunscreen product companies to test for contaminants like benzene, and people can tell Congress to pass laws to modernize cosmetics safety laws,” he said.

Valisure has committed to testing additional sun care products as they have space in their lab schedules, and it is encouraging people to send in sunscreens and sun care products they have purchased to be analyzed.

If you’re interested in having your sunscreen tested in their crowdsourcing study, the full instructions on how to package and send your product can be found here.

What Sunscreens Are Banned

Dont just read the label. Check the ingredient list. No one is yet governing whether a product labeled Reef Safe is, in fact, Reef Safe. What are we looking for then?

First, no aerosol. But beyond that, how do we know what to avoid?Possibly 70% of the sunscreens available to consumers will be affected by the ban.

Top sellers of sunscreens with the banned chemicals include Banana Boat, Coppertone, and Hawaiian Tropic. But even Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic carry sunscreens that are with and without the chemicals.

How confusing!

As consumers, the burden isnt really on us since the ban is on selling and distributing the sunscreens in Hawaii, but as concerned global citizens, we may want to make sure that we are not contributing to the loss of reefs. To do this, were going to have to pay attention to labels.

Look for these chemicals: oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3 octinoxate, also known as 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor

Other harmful ingredients to watch out for are parabens such as: the commonly used methylparaben butylparaben phenoxyethanol, used initially as a mass fish anesthetic.

And the organization that put out the study leading to the new sunscreen ban, Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, also has a comprehensive list of chemicals to look for on labels.

Benzene Found In Popular Sunscreens: What To Know

Banana Boat Mineral Foam Sunscreen Review
  • The chemical benzene, is a known carcinogen.
  • The benzene appears to be a result of manufacturing problems.
  • The benefits of using sunscreen likely outweighs the risks from benzene.

Its important to note that benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreen, and Valisure’s petition suggests that the findings are a result of contamination somewhere in the manufacturing process.

Still, if benzene-contaminated sunscreen proves to be a widespread problem, “the benzene amounts can add up to a significant chronic exposure over a lifetime, says Christopher G. Bunick, MD, associate professor of dermatology at Yale University in New Haven, CT.

“We’re asking our patients to put sunscreen on from 6 months of age, telling them to do it their entire life, their whole body, multiple times a day,” he adds. Go here to learn more about benzene.

To all my fellow avid sunscreen users: as summer begins pls make sure your sunscreen does not have oxybenzone and benzene, a carcinogen that has contaminated numerous sunscreens

anna karenina

In the Valisure statement announcing the findings, Bunick, who is also quoted in the petition, said that “it is critical that regulatory agencies address benzene contamination in sunscreens, and all topical medications at the manufacturing and final product level, so that all individuals feel safe using sunscreen products.”

How Can I Be Sure My Products Are Safe

The manufacturing process is rigorous and highly regulated — and should leave Australians feeling confident in their sunblock, according to Banana Boat’s Marketing Director, Rachel Pullicino.

“The message that sunscreens don’t work is wrong. They are high protection products,” Pullicino told HuffPost Australia.

“We took the complaints and claims that we received last year very seriously and retested the batches of sunscreen that were in question.

“We found no problems with the products. We stand by our claims that they all deliver their labelled SPF ratings as high protection sunscreens and we can stand by all of our testing. Ensign Laboratories are a huge part of that process.”

Application is the biggest variable. If it is not applied evenly on the skin and as directed on the label, it doesn’t work in the way that it should.

“We’ve done so much work in ensuring that we are meeting our SPF claims,” Commercial Director of Ensign Laboratories Andrew Fast said.

“It’s an expensive process and it’s rigorous. But it has to be because we recognise it is such an important product for the health of Australians. And that is something that needs to be encouraged.”

According to the team, discrepancies lie in application — a process that Australians are not getting right.

“This is the biggest variable. If it is not applied evenly on the skin and as directed on the label, it doesn’t work in the way that it should,” Pullicino said.

Some Sunscreens Have A Code On The Bottom Of The Bottle

Some sunscreens, such as Banana Boat, print a code on the bottom of the bottle but you have to decipher it first.

According to Banana Boat’s website, the first two numbers of the code indicate the year the sunscreen was produced, and the next three letters indicate the day of the year produced.

The code on the Banana Boat Sport spray sunscreen below, for example, seems to indicate that the sunscreen was manufactured in 2017, on the 13th day of the year.

Banana Boat sunscreen is effective for three years from the date of manufacture, according to their website, which would make the expiration date for this particular bottle January 13, 2020.

Voluntary Banana Boat Sunscreen Recall

Once an FDA-regulated product is in widespread use, unexpected problems can lead to a manufacturer recall or voluntary market withdrawal. Energizer has already notified its retail partners to stop selling the affected sunscreens and believes it has identified the source of the safety concern. According to its corporate website, Energizer blames the product delivery system, and concluded that the spray valve opening on these cans dispenses more than industry standards for continuous sun care sprays. If an individual comes into contact with a spark or flame before the spray is dry, the product can catch on fire burning the skin. Such horrific injuries sound as if they were taken from a science fiction thriller, but five people have already suffered severe burns in just this manner. New Yorkers who have suffered from these or similar side effects are urged to consult with a qualified New York product liability lawyer.

The affected Banana Boat products were distributed throughout the country from January 2010 through September 30, 2012. Below is a partial listing of the products included in the recent Banana Boat voluntary market withdraw:

Dont hoard sunscreen: It breaks down over time. Most bottles are labeled with an expiration date thats a year or two from when you buy it. If yours has no date, the Mayo Clinic recommends tossing it after three years. And know that keeping your sunscreen in the car, or in direct sun at the beach, may make it deteriorate faster.
