Davis 792 Stain Remover

I left my boat soaking for over two months because of community lockdown last year. I was so disappointed to see that my boats hull accumulated significant stains during that period. Fortunately, my brother had a stock of his Davis Instruments 792 Stain Remover. I thought this would be like other mediocre gel cleaners in the market, but I was wrong.

What I love most about this cleaner is its economical 2L size. Buying smaller portions of cleaners is usually expensive. So, I prefer having a big-sized solution like this instead. It is easy to apply and wipe off. I used a sponge and rubbed it onto the surface, let it dwell for a few minutes, and then wipe the excess off. I was so amazed that every wipe restores its original color.

I like that it removes rust, waterline, oil, and other stains almost effortlessly. I think it is because it comes in a well-absorbing gel form. You can literally see the difference as soon as the gel is in contact with the affected area. Moreover, it is ideal for fiberglass and white painted surfaces, allowing me to work flawlessly. Whats more interesting is it is formulated as a biodegradable cleaner, which means it doesnt harm the environment.

  • Easy to apply and wipe off
  • Removes rust, waterline, oil, and other stains
  • Formulated as a biodegradable cleaner
  • Ideal for fiberglass and white painted surfaces
  • Comes in a well-absorbing gel form
  • Stubborn stains require additional applications, and scrubbing

Spray Star Brite Deck Cleaner On And Brush Around

Restoring the Shine to Fiberglass

Put some of the Star Brite cleaner down onto the wet deck, and move it around using a deck brush. You want to make sure that it is evenly distributed across the fiberglass.

Leave it to settle for three minutes, as this allows the chelating agents to get to work. They actually start to life up dirt and mildew or mold stains, breaking them up.

Handy Hint: Star Brite say leave it for 3 minutes, but I recommend to let the product cut into any stains or unwanted dirt by letting it rest longer. For better results, I have found that 10 minutes does the job.

Once you spray this cleaner down it will start to list dirt and mildew off the fibreglass deck.

Should I Use Gelcoat Restorer

In recent years a number of products have come on the market that claim to restore the surface of the gelcoat. Restorer formulations renew the gloss in essentially the same way as wax by providing a new smooth surface but without the need for buffing. Results can be dramatic, but because restorers are a plastic coating similar to urethane varnish they can wear off, flake off, and occasionally discolor. Restorer kits typically include a prep wash and sometimes a polish in addition to the restorer. A specialized stripper for removing old sealer is also necessary.

There are variations in the recommended application, but in general it is the same as already described clean, polish, and coat. The acrylic sealer is usually water-thin, so applying it to the hull is much easier than, say, paste wax. And it dries to hard film, so no buffing is needed. However you do have to apply several coats five is typical to get a good shine. If the product you have selected doesn’t include an applicator, use a sponge or a soft cloth to wipe the sealer onto the gelcoat. Drying times are short, so subsequent coats can generally be applied almost immediately.

A multicoat application can restore the shine to weathered gelcoat for up to a year, but when it is time to renew it, you will need to remove the old sealer using the special stripper supplied in the kit . Apply five fresh coats of sealer and your boat should shine for another year.

Time To Apply The Buffing Compound

Take your chosen buffing product in hand, as its time to get to work buffing your boat hull. Always keep in mind that you want to avoid scratching the protective finish on your boat hull, at all costs.

That being said, polishing and buffing products are generally abrasive in nature, designed to refresh your hull, making it shine like new before wax is applied, so dont use too much pressure.

Following the directions on your chosen product begin to buff in short sections at a time, only. Depending on your personal preference, you may buff by hand or use a specially designed buffing tool. Try to keep your hand pad or the buffing tool flat and equally distributed.

What Is Fiberglass

Fiberglass is a common term for fiber-reinforced plastic, or FRP, which is a plastic material strengthened using a fiber cloth. Most boats these days are made from fiberglass, along with pickup truck caps, motorhomes, even bathtubs! To give the fiberglass a smooth, shiny surface, a material called gelcoat is applied to the outer surface. For the most part, when you’re looking at a fiberglass boat, you’re really seeing the gelcoat surface on top of the fiberglass itself. However, most people refer to gelcoat as fiberglass, so we use the terms fiberglass and gelcoat interchangeably.

Gelcoat is available in many colors and is fairly durable, but it can become dull or faded as it weathers. Sunlight and air combine to oxidize the gelcoat surface, fading it and making the surface cloudy. The oxidation process for gelcoat is similar to how metals rust or corrode. So how do you keep your gelcoat looking good? Simple: you coat the surface with eitherwaxor a sealer.

Polish is not a coating, but rather an abrasive like extremely fine sandpaper. Polishing removes the pitted surface rather than coating it. Use a soft cloth to apply polish to a small area at a time, rubbing with a circular motion until the surface becomes glassy. After polishing, you should apply a coat of wax to protect the surface and improve the gloss. Some polish products include wax in their formulations.
