Where Is Banana Boat Sunscreen Made

Sunscreen Tips And Quick Reminders

Banana Boat Sunscreen Lotion Review | Best Sunscreen Ever??

Dermatologists recommend always using sunscreen while exposed to the sun and opting for a sun protection factor of at least SPF 30. The AAD also recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, meaning it protects the skin from both Ultraviolet A rays associated with signs of aging and Ultraviolet B rays, which can cause skin damage like sunburns and skin cancer. For continuous sun protection, be sure to reapply your sunscreen after sweating or taking a dip.

Other Sunscreens Have A Tiny Jar Icon On The Back That Indicates The Expiration Date

On some bottles, you can find a tiny open jar icon along with a number such as “12M” or “18M,” according to The Sun. “12M” indicates that the sunscreen is safe to use 12 months after opening, while “18M” would mean it’s good for a year and a half.

The symbol is similar to those you can find on certain cosmetics, such as on this Smashbox primer below.

How Did Benzene Get Into Banana Boat Sunscreen

The class action lawsuit points out that Edgewell does not list benzene as an ingredient on Banana Boat sunscreens. Instead, the chemical is likely a byproduct of the manufacturing process, say the plaintiffs.

The independent lab which tested Banana Boat sunscreen allegedly ruled out the possibility that benzene was created as the sunscreen degraded over time and concluded that the carcinogenic chemical got into the products as they were made.

Further, the plaintiffs point out that not all of the sunscreens tested by the lab contained the chemical, indicating that benzene contamination is not necessary during the manufacturing process.

Voluntary Banana Boat Sunscreen Recall

Once an FDA-regulated product is in widespread use, unexpected problems can lead to a manufacturer recall or voluntary market withdrawal. Energizer has already notified its retail partners to stop selling the affected sunscreens and believes it has identified the source of the safety concern. According to its corporate website, Energizer blames the product delivery system, and concluded that the spray valve opening on these cans dispenses more than industry standards for continuous sun care sprays. If an individual comes into contact with a spark or flame before the spray is dry, the product can catch on fire burning the skin. Such horrific injuries sound as if they were taken from a science fiction thriller, but five people have already suffered severe burns in just this manner. New Yorkers who have suffered from these or similar side effects are urged to consult with a qualified New York product liability lawyer.

The affected Banana Boat products were distributed throughout the country from January 2010 through September 30, 2012. Below is a partial listing of the products included in the recent Banana Boat voluntary market withdraw:

When Was Coppertone Sunscreen Invented

Banana Boat Ultra Sport Sunscreen Lotion

Coppertone sunscreen was invented in Florida in 1944. It was created by a pharmacist named Benjamin Green who designed it specifically for the U.S. military during World War II. Many soldiers were getting burned while stationed in the Pacific tropics.

The original Coppertone Suntan Cream was made with a substance called red veterinary petroleum, or Red Vet Pet for short. This ingredient was approved for use during the war by the American Medical Association and helped sunscreen become part of the first aid kits found in life rafts and tanks.

Red Vet Pet did the job when it came to protecting soldiers, but eventually Coppertone wanted to get their product on the shelves for consumers. They made their lotion more marketable by mixing cocoa butter and coconut oil into the formula and by introducing an advertising icon to the world the Coppertone Girl.

Today, Coppertone is one of the top suppliers of sunscreen, pulling in a cool $87.2 million in 2019. The Coppertone Girl has also inspired a legion of fans and merchandise made in her honor!

What Sunscreens Are Banned

Dont just read the label. Check the ingredient list. No one is yet governing whether a product labeled Reef Safe is, in fact, Reef Safe. What are we looking for then?

First, no aerosol. But beyond that, how do we know what to avoid?Possibly 70% of the sunscreens available to consumers will be affected by the ban.

Top sellers of sunscreens with the banned chemicals include Banana Boat, Coppertone, and Hawaiian Tropic. But even Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic carry sunscreens that are with and without the chemicals.

How confusing!

As consumers, the burden isnt really on us since the ban is on selling and distributing the sunscreens in Hawaii, but as concerned global citizens, we may want to make sure that we are not contributing to the loss of reefs. To do this, were going to have to pay attention to labels.

Look for these chemicals: oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3 octinoxate, also known as 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor

Other harmful ingredients to watch out for are parabens such as: the commonly used methylparaben butylparaben phenoxyethanol, used initially as a mass fish anesthetic.

And the organization that put out the study leading to the new sunscreen ban, Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, also has a comprehensive list of chemicals to look for on labels.

Some Sunscreens Have A Code On The Bottom Of The Bottle

Some sunscreens, such as Banana Boat, print a code on the bottom of the bottle but you have to decipher it first.

According to Banana Boat’s website, the first two numbers of the code indicate the year the sunscreen was produced, and the next three letters indicate the day of the year produced.

The code on the Banana Boat Sport spray sunscreen below, for example, seems to indicate that the sunscreen was manufactured in 2017, on the 13th day of the year.

Banana Boat sunscreen is effective for three years from the date of manufacture, according to their website, which would make the expiration date for this particular bottle January 13, 2020.

A Look Inside Edgewell Personal Care In Ormond Beach Courtesy Photo

With the beaches in Volusia county reopening to sunbathing, Edgewell Personal Care is praying production of sunscreen ramps up.

The last couple of months have been difficult for the Ormond Beach manufacturer, said Director of Operations Jose Lago. Edgewell has facilities worldwide, but the Ormond location specializes in producing Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen. Lago said based on market reports, sunscreen consumption is down 50% in the U.S. The company is, however, exploring other products to manufacture.

We have to weather the storm,” Lago said. “Not much you can do.

But, he said they’re prepared for the times ahead.

Edgewell Personal Care began in 2015 after it split from the Energizer Corporation, Lago explained. The company as a whole produces different personal care products across the globe, and its heritage dates back to 1910 when Colonel Jacob Schick invented the first cutthroat razor, according to Edgewell’s website. Then in 1932, The International Laytex Company was founded, which would later be known as Playtex. In 2007, following various mergers and introduction of product brands, the two companies merged.

While the measures that have been taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 have been “painful,” said Lago, they were also necessary.

“Because the option of doing nothing would have been a disaster,” he said.

Banana Boat Sunscreens Contain Carcinogenic Petrochemical Class Action Lawsuit Claims

Banana Boat sunscreens contain benzene, a known human carcinogen, but the company doesnt advise consumers and wont take it off shelves, a nationwide class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Maria Zapatero filed the class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of Banana Boat sunscreens Thursday in a Florida court, alleging violation of Floridas Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and unjust enrichment.

The defendants named in the class action are Energizer Holdings, Inc., Edgewell Personal Care Company, Edgewell Personal Care Brands, LLC, Edgewell Personal Care, LLC, Playtex Products, Inc. and Sun Pharmaceuticals, LLC.

Zapatero says the companies distribute, market and sell several over-the-counter sunscreen products under their brand name Banana Boat, and that several of the sunscreen products have been tested and found to contain benzene, a known human carcinogen.

The presence of benzene in Defendants Banana Boat sunscreen products was not disclosed in the products label, in violation of state and federal law, the class action lawsuit says.

In 2020, analytical pharmacy Valisure ran tests on a variety of the Banana Boat sprays and lotions and discovered that certain products contain benzene with values ranging from less than 0.1 parts per million , 0.10 ppm to 2 ppm, and more than 2 ppm, the claim states.

It says benzene is used primarily as a solvent in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and that the major United States source of benzene is petroleum.

Why Are Lifeguards Noses White

In the 1980s, a sunblock called Zinka hit the market and took over surfing culture. Athletes and outdoor lovers swore by this colorful sunscreen and would swipe it over their noses to block the light from the sun. It was made from zinc oxide paste, which was thick and left a visible mark on your face.

Zinkas popularity with the younger crowd is what created the cliché of lifeguards noses being white. It was a trend that continued on into the rest of the decade, showing up in TV shows and movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

What Sunscreens Have Oxybenzone

Banana Boat Kids SPF 50 Review | Mineral Sunscreen | Sensitive Skin Friendly

Ok, I get it. None of those scientific words mean anything to you well unless you are a scientist, that is.So I figured I would research for you, and it seems that a simple search to find a list of sunscreens containing oxybenzone, which has been said to cause coral bleaching, does not bring up a list to avoid.

Fortunately, I was able to find some information so you at least know a few brands to avoid.Of course, after this section, Ill let you know several Reef Safe options that have received high Hawaiian approval, but before we go into that

Lets take a look at some of the brands and products you will want to steer clear of:Johnson & Johnson In a 2017 safety and care statement by Johnson & Johnson, it is clear that they do not find the study about these chemicals to have enough scientific evidence to change their products at this time.

This may change later, but a portion of their statement on oxybenzone reads:

Therefore, Johnson & Johnson, a parent company to Neutrogena, will not be sold and deemed harmful to the coral reefs and banned by Hawaiian legislation.

Bayer All current products contain oxybenzone, but they have stated they will comply with the new regulation for Hawaii. You will need to look at labels to make an informed decision when buying these products.

What Sunscreen Is Safe For Coral Reefs

Just like reading food labels: the simpler the formula, the better. The safest sunscreens for reefs are mineral-based sunscreens that do not wash off your body when in the ocean.

These sunscreens use minerals that are physical blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun without the use of chemicals, like oxybenzone that penetrates the skin and stay in the body for an unknown amount of time.

Also, look for coated, non-nano ingredients. Not all sunscreens are created equal, so I scoured the internet to find the best options out there for you to choose

What You Need To Know About The Banana Boat Sunscreen Investigation

Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen SPF 30 travel size 1 oz (case ...

Health Canada has been investigating Banana Boat sunscreens since serious chemical burns were reported in babies who used the products last year.

May 10, 2018

Last year, after several reports of babies developing serious chemical burns upon using Banana Boat sunscreens, Health Canada launched an investigation into the products. By mid-July of 2017, the department of health had received nearly 200 complaints from Canadians about Banana Boat sunscreen products. Now, with sunscreen season ramping up again, we checked in with Health Canada to find out what parents need to know to protect their kids this year.

Could your baby’s sunscreen cause severe burns? Health Canada told us that they tested a number of Banana Boat sunscreen products and reviewed Banana Boats own testing on the products associated with the complaints of reported chemical burns. The tests and review of company results confirmed that the samples contained the correct amount of medicinal ingredients, that the pH levels of the samples were satisfactory, and that no undeclared drugs were identified, said the statement from a Health Canada spokesperson.

If Health Canadas continuing investigation finds evidence of a safety or quality concern with any sunscreen, the department says it will take immediate action and keep Canadians informed.
