What Kind Of Paint To Use On Fiberglass Boat

What Is Marine Paint

Gelcoat Or Paint? Which One Should I Use On My Boat Restoration!!

These paints are antifouling protective coatings, designed to cope with organic pests that attach to the hull of a boat and to withstand seaborne corrosion, sometimes releasing layers of biocides as a boat moves through the water. This guide to bottom boat painting deals strictly with under the waterline.

Its important to prep the hull of a boat for a long-lasting effect by removing old paint and then all grease from the surface. Its not always necessary to remove all paint, just the outermost layer. If youre not racing, its good to know that old paint doesnt add that much weight or drag to a boat for you to bother stripping everything off and painting afresh.

But sometimes its necessary and sometimes itll give you the chance to do a good job while the boat is hauled up. It could save on fuel costs and if cruising

Beyond color, other simple considerations include time, climate and the boats specific surface material or substrate to get the right antifouling bottom paint. The longevity of different paint types is also relevant depending on how many years between dry-dock the boat will see.

Two: Apply The Primer

Getting paint to adhere to fiberglass for the long haul will require priming. Once your area is safe, clean, and dry, apply the primer over the gel coat. You can use either a brush or a roller for this, but the goal is to have a thin, even coat of primer everywhere on the fiberglass where youll end up painting.

Using Chemical Bottom Paint Removers

Some of the same procedures for dry-scraping will be used with marine paint stripping products. The difference is time and how much your muscles will protest. Chemical strippers have gotten cheaper, safer and environmentally friendlier.

Smart Strip by Dumond is an eco-friendly water-based product that can remove 15 layers of paint without any harmful chemicals. There are no noxious fumes or toxic spillage and Dumonds strip is in fact biodegradable.

Dumonds marine paint remover works well on wooden boats, fiberglass and metal. On fiberglass boats Smart Strip will remove the antifouling paint without harming the gelcoat underneath.

Because Smart Strip doesnt have harsh chemicals it should be left on longer than even the instructions suggest. It wont hurt. Can even be left on overnight. Professionals wont use this product because it takes too long, but amateurs can afford to let their handiwork do its thing.

Another solution that doesnt punish nature is the Sunnyside Multi-Strip Advanced Paint & Varnish Remover. It too contains no methylene chloride, effectively clinging to vertical paint surfaces and pulling up to 15 layers away from all boating substrate materials with little spillage.

After applying Multi-Strip with either brush, spray or roller, wipe away from surfaces that are not intended for paint removal with a cloth. Wait 3-5 hours depending on the temperature and scrape away.

Different Types Of Topside Boat Paints

As a whole, topside paints are similar. Meant for use above the waterline, theyre durable, resistant to moisture, can endure hull expansion and contraction and resist UV rays. The differences between the types of topside boat paints are in how well they rank in each of these areas.

  • Two-part polyurethane paints outperform every other topside paint when it comes to hardness, scratch and UV ray resistance and gloss and color retention. Why not stop here? Because it comes with a price tag to match. In addition to being the most expensive topside paint, it also requires very specific primer and application equipment.
  • One-part polyurethane paints are perfect for do-it-yourselfers. While they dont quite have the performance of two-part polyurethane, theyre easy to apply and provide a beautiful shiny gloss finish. Theyre affordable, safer to mix and apply and easy to touch up.
  • Alkyd marine enamel paints are very popular because theyre easy to apply, glossy and affordable. They require fewer coats, but will require a fresh coat each year, as they arent as durable. Their oil base makes them a great match for wood, and theyre easy to touch up.

Where Slime Is A Problem

The big news here is that the popular anti-slime additive Irgarol is, after an absence of several years, back! Irgarol disrupts photosynthesis in plants, which makes it an effective additive for controlling slime and preventing that ubiquitous waterline “beard”. Micron Extra by Interlux is an example of this type of paint. Other choices include paints boosted with the anti-slime biocide zinc pyrithione, also called zinc omadine.

Totalboat Wet Edge Marine Topside Paint

Every owner of a fiberglass boat likes a certain color. TotalBoat recognizes this need, so this paint is offered in 21 colors. I picked the Hatteras off-white for a beautiful finish with maximum retention of color and gloss.

Whats more to love is its strong resistance against scratch, stains, UV rays, and harmful chemicals. Fading, peeling, and cracking are no longer my concerns since I covered my boat with this paint.

Its also effective in restoring an old boat. I put an old DuraNautic boat on sale, but no one got interested. Im glad it remained in my possession as this paint covered every flaw well. This paint can be used on wood and painted surfaces, too. Its also not surprising if you see it on RVs and campers.

This topside paint made the hull of my fiberglass boat gorgeous. Normally, surfaces need to be cleaned regularly. With this paint, its a piece of cake as the finish is not easily tarnished, thanks to its polyurethane content.

However, its not recommended for boats that stay in the water for more than 72 hours. Its not a problem for me, since I always take my boat out of the dock whenever I dont need to be in the waters.

  • Not recommended for boats that stay in the water for over 72 hours
  • Has a thick texture that needs to be stirred well

How to Paint the Bottom of Your Fiberglass Boat – DIY

The thing that impressed me about the TotalBoat Wet Edge marine paint is that it is effortless to apply. Straight out of the can, it already has a perfect consistency. It does not need a thinner. Just mix the contents thoroughly. It was so easy to use that I only needed several brushes to cover my 14-inch sailboat with several coats.

I am also glad that it has several choices for colors. I was worried at first because I needed three different colors for a project, and I did not want to use different brands if I can help it. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that all the colors I needed were already in the 21-color lineup for this brand.

This paint is not just for fiberglass, which I appreciated because after I painted my boat, there was still a lot of product left over. It can also adhere strongly to fiberglass and on wood and metal. I used the leftover paint to give my hardwood front door a new coat and it was surprisingly good.

Aside from how good it looked on my front door, I am also satisfied with its durability. Since it is marine paint, I did not doubt that it can protect whatever it covers from rain and moisture. However, it was also abrasion-resistant. I tested it by attempting to scratch the second coat as soon as it cured and there is not even a mark.

  • Resistant to saltwater, UV rays, and chemicals
  • Has a long drying and curing time

  • Once youve wiped down the entire area with a tack cloth, its time to apply your first coat of primer. Resist the urge to apply a thick coat instead, paint on just enough to cover the surface of the area youre going to paint. Let the primer dry. Make sure you follow the manufacturers instructions for drying time and time between coats. Dont panic if you can see uneven spots on the surface well address that in the next step.

  • Fill low spots with epoxy.
  • Inevitably, youll notice uneven spots on the surface maybe left over from dents or peeling paint you tried to sand out. Once the primer has dried, its time to touch up these low spots with epoxy. Using your putty knife, apply the epoxy and do your best to evenly spread it over the low areas, creating a surface thats as even as possible. Then, let the epoxy cure.

  • Lightly sand.
