The Lighthouse

On Friday, October 21, 2005, the Cape St. George Light collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico. On Monday, December 1, 2008, the reconstructed lighthouse was opened to the public. Built in 1852 on what is now Little St. George Island, the Light finally succumbed to beach erosion and pounding waves. Working with state and federal government support, the St. George Lighthouse Association spearheaded the effort to salvage the pieces of the Light. Volunteers cleaned the mortar off thousands of the old bricks. The original plans were obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and the lighthouse was reconstructed on St. George Island, using as much of the original materials as possible. Please browse the accompanying pages to read about the Lights history and to see photos of the Light through the years, including extensive coverage of the reconstruction effort. Take a look at our merchandise and membership opportunities, and the calendar of upcoming events. And come visit and climb the 92 stairs to the top of the Light. Your continued support of the Cape St. George Light is important to help maintain our historic lighthouse for future generations!

As mentioned above, the further and deeper you go into the bay, the more fish you discover. This rule also includes the rarer species of fish. Our customers succeed in catching even sharks, snapper, mahi-mahi, king mackerel, and sailfish! Deep-sea fishing is the best decision to haunt your fishing trophies.

However, some specific species are restricted to catch . Pay special attention to what you catch in June and July, as these months are, although full of success in fishing, can also provide problems with fishing codes. However, since our staff is highly certified, they will provide you with all the needed help and information on what and how to fish. Moreover, we suggest catch-and-release programs in order to save the ecological situation in the area.

Just Show Up And Fish

Here are the fishing charter programs we suggest to try in St. George Island bay:

  • Inshore calm water fishing employs going no further than 1 mile from the shore. It is a great choice for taking kids’ trips or for the first experience trial. In these trips, it is possible to catch such species as redfish, speckled trout, spotted seatrout, flounder, tripletail, red snapper, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, black sea bass, pompano, gag grouper, and black drum. The inshore months are February, August, and October.
  • Nearshore fishing will take you up to 9 miles from the shore. We suppose it is the best opportunity for those who tried fishing at least once and want to proceed with their skills. These charters will more likely supply you with kingfish, gag, and goliath groupers, black sea bass, amberjack, cobia, blacktip shark, bull shark, tripletail, mangrove, lane, red, and vermilion snappers. April, July, and October are the best time for these trips.
  • Offshore fishing is undoubtedly pro-choice. Except for the time it takes to go more than 40 miles away from the shore, it is also a true test for intermediate and advanced fishers. You can try your best to catch mahi-mahi, kingfish, gag, red, and goliath groupers, cobia, blacktip shark, bull shark, black sea bass, amberjack, lane, red, and vermilion snappers, blackfin tuna, great barracuda, and wahoo there. It is better to go on offshore trips in the summer.

Great time on the beach! Shelling was amazing! Thanks Captain Dan. His folkloric knowledge enriched the journey. For best results disembarking and embarking from the stern is easiest.

Everything about Journeys was A1. Friendly people, very accommodating, always accessible, and helpful and polite. I will rent from them every time and neysnot even check any of their competitors.

We have been using Journeys for 20 years now for our kayak needs on St. George Island. Also have used their paddle boards over the last few years. Always friendly and always quality kayak gear.

Lost count of all the fish – and limited out on redfish. Captain Jeremy had dolphins leaping in our wake and we even were startled by an inquisitive manatee in the great redfish “hole” up the Apalachicola river. Best trip ever!

The Sunset Tour was fantastic. Russ was our captain and made the trip exactly what we wanted. A memory we will always remember!

Paula Deen Video Testimonial

We caught our limit of red fish in very short order. We went shelling on Little St. George. We followed some dolphins. We caught some sharks , and both my boys caught their very first fish with only a little help from Capt. Lee. I was really impressed with his patience with my kids – many captains will tolerate kids on their boats, but Capt. Lee really engaged them. And, all the adults had a wonderful time as well. I would highly recommend for just adults and families.

– Shelley G. on Yelp.com

Captain Coble was awesome. We had non stop action all day. Red snapper, mangrove snapper, Spanish mackerel, grunts, reds, trout, triple tail, he put us on the fish! My 80 year old grandfather said this was one of the best fishing trips he had been on in a long time, and has been on quite a few charter trips. Captain coble comes highly recommended for a offshore, inshore combo like we did.
