How To Wash Ll Bean Boat And Tote Bag

Heavy Canvas Tote Bags

Can you wash LL Bean canvas bags?

Heavier canvas tote bags, like the ever-popular L.L. Bean Boat and Totes, can be cleaned in exactly the same way as their lighter weight counterparts in the machine, cold water only, reshape to air dry. The biggest difference here is that when the bag comes out of the wash it will be quite stiff and possibly creased in odd spots. That is okay! I really promise. You’ll want to do your best to reshape the bag and then allow it to dry standing up. As it dries, the canvas will lose its stiffness and any odd creases will come out naturally.

In the event that your cotton or canvas tote bags have stains on them, it’s important to pre-treat the spots using a spray like Shout or Zout before you launder the bags, since those stains will probably have been there for a while and will need the extra help to eliminate.

The Sanctioned Way: Spot Treating

According to the care instructions provided by L.L. Bean, a dirty or stained Boat and Tote should be spot cleaned. Of course, “spot clean” is an instruction that’s a little light on specifics, which is why you have me to break it down in more detail for you.

First, you’ll need a mild detergent. Liquid laundry detergent is an obvious option, but you can also press dish or hand soap into duty, or something like Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid Soap , along with water, a small bowl, and a light-colored sponge or rag. The “light-colored” part is really important, especially if you use a sponge, as dye transfer can very easily occur and then you’ll have a whole other kind of spot in need of treating.

Once you’ve assembled your tools, dilute a small amount of detergent with about a cup of water, dip your light-colored sponge or rag into the solution, wring it out so that it is damp and sudsy, and scrub at stains and soiled portions of the bag, working with the grain. Repeat as needed until the stains are gone, and then allow the bag to air dry before using.

Thick Cotton Overnight Bags

Heavier quilted cotton overnight bags like those uber-polarizing Vera Bradley numbers can also go in the washing machine, but because theyre often multicolored and not necessarily colorfast, theres a high risk of the dye running and bleeding into lighter colored areas of the bag. The best way to safeguard against that is to use a Shout Color Catcher in the wash. Just like with tote bags, use cold water to prevent shrinkage. However, unlike cotton or canvas totes, your overnight bag can go in the dryer, though it would be better to let the bag air dry. If you do want to machine dry, only use the low-heat cycle, as medium- or high-heat will be too hot for the cotton.

What Is A Duffel Bag

A duffel, also known as a duffle or kit bag, is a large bag made from a soft, flexible material like canvas or leather. The bag will either zip or cinch closed with the help of drawstrings and is typically spacious enough for everything you need to carry.

The history of duffel bags starts in 1677 in a Belgian town named, fittingly enough, Duffel. The word duffel originally referred to a coarse woolen cloth that was made in the town and was then eventually sold all over Europe. This cloth went on to become canvas, a material that we still use today to make everything from clothes to furniture to canvas bags!

Poet E.E. Cummings was the first to use the phrase duffel bag during World War I. He was serving in the military as a volunteer ambulance driver and wrote the phrase in a letter he sent back home.
