How Long Is Banana Boat Sunscreen Good For

The Worst Kids Sunscreensbanana Boat

Banana Boat Sunscreen Lotion Review | Best Sunscreen Ever??

Banana Boat Baby Max Protect, SPF=100 for babies earned a place at the top of the list of the Environmental Working Groups Hall of Shame. Dont be fooled by the high SPF number. This sunscreen protects against UVB radiation but leaves babies skin exposed to UVA radiation that is known to cause aging and skin cancer. Yikes. It also contains a frightening long list of ingredients.

One ingredient that is of concern is oxybenzone which has a hazard score of 9. Among the concerns for oxybenzone are Developmental/reproductive toxicity, Violations, restrictions & warnings, Endocrine disruption, Allergies/immunotoxicity, Persistence and bioaccumulation, Enhanced skin absorption, Biochemical or cellular level changes. When I watched Toxic Childhood last week, the advice one doctor gave was Dont put anything on your skin that you wouldnt eat. Because the skin has no filter these toxins go directly into the bloodstream.

Another unsafe kids sunscreen is Banana Boat Kids Ultra Mist Continuous Clear Spray Sunscreen SPF 50. It gets an overall score of 7 because of the high health concerns which reflects combined hazards of all products ingredients. Actual health risks from product use, if any, will depend on the amount of the ingredients that absorb into the body and individual vulnerability to health problems. There are several ingredients which are of concern.

The Environmental Working Group says:

Does Higher Spf Mean Less Tan

Sunscreen may prevent tanning to some degree. Wearing a chemical- or physical-based sunscreen may help prevent the suns rays from causing photoaging and skin cancer. It may still be possible to get a slight tan, even if you do wear sunscreen. However, no amount of deliberate tanning is considered safe.

Negative Press For Banana Boat Sunscreen

In recent times Banana Boat sunscreens have managed to get themselves into some controversial situations, to the extent of actually having to withdraw a huge number of their products from the shelves.

According to WEB MD, at least five people have actually caught fire after using one of the Banana Boat sunscreen spray products. This spurred a recall of 23 spray sunscreen products sold from January 2010 through September 2012.The Banana Boat manufacturer, Energizer Holdings Inc., announced that “If a consumer comes into contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite”.

It seems that the main issue is that their spray takes too long to dry and until dry remains flammable. In total there have been 4 burn reports in the USA and one in Canada, but they were asking people who have bought their product already not to use them. The fact that all continuous spray sunscreen products contain some sort of warning on their labels that they must not to used near open flames or sparks, and even that people should refrain from smoking when using such products, is enough to put me off completely.

However, the reality is that not many people read the warning labels until after the event. If interested though, the list of products can be found here.

What Lab Testing Can Reveal About Sunscreen Efficacy

Banana Boat Sport SPF 50+ Reviews

Researchers have lab tests to assess UVB protection , UVA protection , water resistance, contact irritancy, , and even how well a given sunscreen sticks to skin following mechanical abrasion .

The FDA regulates sunscreens as over-the-counter drugs. To obtain marketing approval from the agency, sunscreen makers must submit data showing their products are safe and effective. Among other things, the FDA considers lab data on a given sunscreens SPF value, broad-spectrum protection, and water resistance. Labs that test sunscreens recruit volunteers who are exposed to UV radiation from sun lamps while wearing sunscreen and not wearing it . The FDA requires that these tests be done on at least 10 people. Labs that test sunscreens also examine how the formulas perform when applied to acrylic plates, quantifying the amount of UV radiation that passes through. In all these cases, to achieve accurate test results, the researchers must apply the sunscreens in precise amounts and distribute them uniformly across the test surfaces. This is not how people typically use sunscreen.

The Environmental Working Group and Consumer Reports are two organizations that regularly report findings on, among other things, whether a sunscreens SPF matches whats stated on the bottle. Year after year, they find that many do not. But even the best lab-test data reveals little about how people actually use sunscreensespecially when it comes to spray sunscreens.

How To Choose Sunscreen And Sun Protection Products

People who want to get the most from their sunscreen should ensure their chosen product includes the following:

  • Broad spectrum protection: This means that the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, both of which can cause skin cancer and premature aging.
  • SPF of 30 or higher: The Food and Drug Administration recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. However, according to the American Cancer Society , sunscreens with an SPF factor of 15 only filter out around 93% of UVB rays. SPFs of 30 filter out 97%, while SPFs of 50 or more filter out 9899%. For this reason, the ACS recommends wearing an SPF of at least 30.
  • Water resistance: For water and sporting activities, a water resistant sunscreen can be a good option. By ensuring the sunscreen specifies how long the product is water resistant for, a person can be confident when to reapply.

The ACS advises always reading the label before purchasing sunscreen.

Sunscreens have a shelf life of around 23 years, and a person should check the expiration date before use as an expired product might not provide appropriate protection. The

How Dangerous Is Benzene In Sunscreen

Experts’ primary issue is that benzene has long been recognized as a known carcinogen , and benzene-contaminated sunscreens pose a risk for unintentional absorption over time, even if the exact risk threshold for skin isn’t clear currently.

When it comes to sunscreen, it’s likely that potential side effects would be from chronic exposure over a longer period of time, which could lead to increased risk for blood disorders like anemia or leukemia and other cell-based cancers. “The concern would be, had this not been brought to light, the diligent sunscreen user could have a huge lifetime exposure especially as when one considers that the skin is the largest organ of the body, and that many have become accustomed to applying it all over the body routinely,” explains Kenneth Mark, M.D, a private-practicing dermatologist in the New York region and a clinical professor within New York University’s Department of Dermatology.

This being said, it’s crucial to understand that experts are not advocating that you skip sunscreen altogether. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun’s powerful rays is responsible for upwards of 90% of all cases of skin cancers, and equally 90% of visible aging, Dr. Cohen adds, citing the U.S. Skin Cancer Foundation. “After 40 years as a dermatologist, I see a far greater danger to consumers stemming from failure to use any sunscreen at all.”

Best Practices For Sun Protection

While finding the perfect sunscreen that has broad-spectrum coverage and an SPF of at least 30 is critical to protecting yourself from the sun, many experts we talked to also made sure to point out that avoiding sun damage doesnt end with a good sunscreen.

While sunscreen is an important part of a sun protection strategy, it is not our only protection, says Richard. Remember that clothing, shade structures, sunglasses are all additional measures to use when protecting your skin from UV rays. And Amanda Turney, a press officer at the FDA, encourages consumers to limit time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the suns rays are most intense.

Most Toxic Sunscreens To Avoid

Heres a big takeaway thatll make things somewhat less complicated. EWG recommends avoiding all spray sunscreens. Not only are they very difficult to apply effectiveness and evenly, but theres some concern the ingredients could potentially cause irreversible lung damage. The truth is, the ingredients just havent been tested in the aerosol capacity for long-term impact on human health, like so many other everyday chemicals, unfortunately.

When it comes to sunscreens, here are some of the other worst overall offenders scoring in the Red Zone for major safety concerns. Overall, these products tested poorly in the EWG analysis and are considered bad choices for sun protection. Just remember, this list is not exhaustive. To check your favorite sunscreen or to peruse the database, .)

This is by no means a complete list. Be sure to check your individual products safety assessment at EWG.org.

How We Chose Our Testing Pool

We selected 12 sunscreens to test after extensively researching the different types available, their active ingredients and minimum requirements for effective protection against the sun. We relied heavily on research done by the FDA and spoke to various experts who echoed and supported the conclusions of the FDA.

We tested only sunscreens that were broad-spectrum , had an SPF of 30 or above, and didnt contain oxybenzone or either of the two ingredients the FDA suggested as unsafe .

We interviewed several experts, including dermatologists, to create these criteria. Dr. David Colbert, the founder and head physician at New York Dermatology Group, said micronized zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the best active ingredients to look for because they are inertly safe. Chemical sunblocks the super long words most people cant say or spell such as methoxycinnamate can get into the bloodstream and into the environment, he says. I prefer physical sunblocks and of course sunblock clothing and umbrellas.

Sunscreen Tips And Quick Reminders

Dermatologists recommend always using sunscreen while exposed to the sun and opting for a sun protection factor of at least SPF 30. The AAD also recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, meaning it protects the skin from both Ultraviolet A rays associated with signs of aging and Ultraviolet B rays, which can cause skin damage like sunburns and skin cancer. For continuous sun protection, be sure to reapply your sunscreen after sweating or taking a dip.

How Much Sunscreen Should I Use

To get the SPF listed on the bottle, you need to put 2 mg/cm2 on your skin. That means the average-size adult needs roughly a shot glasss worth of sunscreen for their mostly naked body . So, as you may have just concluded, you are almost certainly not using enough sunscreen. A 2014 study showed that people typically use a quarter to half as much sunscreen as they need to per application to meet the advertised SPF.

Spray sunscreens are trickier, as its hard to tell how much ends up on your skin, but if youre headed to the beach in a bikini or similar, weve found that spraying the sunscreen close to your body for roughly two minutes in a windlessbut well-ventilatedarea should do the trick.

Apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, since it takes that long for the formula to fully sink into your skin, and then again once every hour , plus every time after you work up a sweat or go in the water.

A note about water resistance: Some sunscreen makers claim their formulas are water resistant, but no sunscreen is waterproof or sweatproof. As such, you should never count on sunscreen to stick to your skin after youve gone for a swim or worked out, and you should definitely reapply after you do either of those things. Per FDA regulations, sunscreen can be labeled as water resistant for only up to 80 minutes, by which point you likely should have reapplied anyway.

On some bottles, you can find a tiny open jar icon along with a number such as “12M” or “18M,” according to The Sun. “12M” indicates that the sunscreen is safe to use 12 months after opening, while “18M” would mean it’s good for a year and a half.

The symbol is similar to those you can find on certain cosmetics, such as on this Smashbox primer below.

There is no scientific evidence in support of its use for sunburn, but anecdotal evidence is that it is soothing and safe and can feel cooling.

Aloe vera is a plant species that can trace its origins to the Arabian Peninsula.

Mentions of aloe vera as a curative ingredient can be found in the Ebers Papyrus, from 16th Century BC, and in Pliny the Elders Natural History, which was written in the mid-first century AD.

Despite the supposed lack of scientific evidence to back its use as a treatment for sunburn, many health professionals still recommend it for soothing irritated skin.

So How Did Benzene End Up In Sunscreen Then

“It’s not an ingredient that is added to sunscreen, and likely, occurs as a contaminant, a byproduct of manufacturing, or in the production of another raw material , like alcohol or aloe vera,” explains Laura Cohen, M.D., a board-certified dermatologic surgeon serving as President and CEO of CoLabs International. “Benzene contamination may occur in many alcohol spray applications, and in some alcohol or aloe vera-based lotions.”

Some sunscreens indicated in Valisure’s study contained nearly three times the FDA-approved limit of benzene within pharmaceuticals in general, but it’s currently unclear if anyone has suffered immediate symptoms from any of the study’s implicated products.
