What Types Of Boats Will Have Names

All types of boats can have names. Any boat can have names. No law states that only particular types of vessels need to be named. But, often, small boaters will not name their boats.

  • For speed or powerboat, generally, if you go for a name that is related to speed, such as Rebel, lightning, etc., it will be pleasant to your boat . And probably you shouldnt go for a name related to slow-moving or slow-going for a speed boat.
  • For a sailboat, you can keep any names related to wind, clouds, sailing, etc. For a sailboat speed is not related at all, sailboats are related to relaxation, calm, stress relief, etc. Some of the names for a sailboat are summer wind, sailing free, sail away, etc.
  • For a fishing boat, you can select names anything related to fishes, tacking ability, about fishing, etc. If you have big outboard motors, then you can go for speed boat names as well. Some of the names for a fishing boat are Kingfisher, gone fishing, fish magician, etc.

Q: What Is So Important About The Hull Identification Number

A: All Massachusetts boats must have an approved Hull Identification Number in order to be registered and/or titled. The HIN is unique to each boat, which allows the full history of the vessel to be traced from the manufacturer forward. The HIN is designed so that tampering will cause clear and permanent damage to the boat’s hull, so it is critical in all stolen boat investigations. A vessel shall not operate on the State’s waters unless the vessel displays the assigned HIN affixed by the manufacturer as required by the US Coast Guard, pursuant to Title 33 CFR, Part 181, Subpart C – manufacturer requirements, but OLE may issue HIN’s for homemade boats and any manufactured vessel that does not have an assigned HIN. The number contains at least 12 characters and is permanently mounted or engraved on the upper right corner of the transom. Federal regulations require that the number is also placed in a second location which varies by manufacturer and model. If applicable, at the time of registration, your boat will be assigned a HIN . You will be given instructions on how to place this HIN on your boat. You must provide proof, to the registration office, of the HIN placement on your boat before you will receive your registration card and decal.

Where To Buy A Boat In Ontario

If you are purchasing a new or pre-owned boat, we strongly recommend you use a dealer or certified broker. They will walk you through the process step-by-step, ensure the vessel has been properly maintained and surveyed and can also assist with marine financing, insurance and offer ongoing support once youre off using your boat on your own.

Of course, many pre-owned boats are also available for a private sale, which is another option. Most used boats have some imperfections, and youll want to be fully informed before you make your decision. Have the boat pulled out of the water, and a surveyor inspect the hull. If the boat has an engine other than a small outboard, a mechanical survey should also be done.

If you choose to purchase a boat privately, make sure you get a receipt in writing that you can keep as a proof of purchase and ownership for licensing purposes.

What Kind Of Boat Must Be Registered

Generally, boats must be registered in their state if they have a gasoline, diesel or electric motor, including a trolling motor. Personal Watercrafts are considered motorized crafts and needs to be registered in most states. Sailboats without auxiliary power must be registered if over a certain size like eight feet, but that differs by state. The registration requirements for kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, rowboats and other human-powered craft also differ by state but most dont need to be registered.

You Are Your Boat Name

Off the waters, you might be Jane from accounting or Dan from the cul-de-sac. But on the open waters, youre Dan of the Marino . Your actual name, of course, is secondary.

It sails well beyond the bragging rights of having a cool or funny boat name. Its about your legacy on the sea. Do you want to be the clown on the water? The majestic sailor? A casual or cultural cruiser? A sailing legend? Or an esteemed angler? Or do you want to be forgotten with a lame boat name?

It starts and ends with your boat name, which may prove even more telling than your sailing escapades.

Pleasure Craft Licensing In Ontario

Whether you are buying a new or used boat from a dealer, or are buying one privately, you should make sure that it is properly licensed. A Pleasure Craft License is a number affixed to the side of your boat to help the boat be identified in case of an emergency. The number is similar to a license plate on your car/truck but does not need renewal. The number needs to be shown on the outside of your boat, be clearly visible to others and need to:

  • be at least 7.5 centimetres high and
  • in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow.

Conversely, a Pleasure Craft Operator Card proves competency in operating a pleasure craft. Every boat operator is required to have an operator’s card. Pleasure craft operator licenses can be issued at the qualified marina or online by certified test centres like Boat Smart Exam .

A Pleasure Craft License does not prove ownership of the boat. A copy of the bill of sale proves you own the boat and should also be kept on board at all times. Anyone can register for a pleasure craft license as long as you have proof you own the boat. Applications must be submitted by mail to the pleasure craft licensing center.

Buying a boat? Here’s what you need to do.

  • You have 90 days to transfer the license on your boat into your name from the time you purchase the boat. In order to transfer your license you need to download a copy of the application form from the Pleasure Craft Licensing website.
  • How To Christen A Boat With Its Name

FishyWraps Quality Boat Names & Transom Wraps Nationwide ...

How to christen a boat is open to interpretation, since different cultures have their own set of norms. The Vikings are said to have started the celebration with human sacrifice. Ick. In middle-age Europe holy water was sprinkled over the boat, but good luck finding a supply of holy water in your local WalMarts refrigerated section. And it was the British Navy which began the familiar practice of smashing a bottle of champagne across the bow, which is not politically correct these days as both broken glass and carbon dioxide can be considered pollutants. More modern boat christening ceremonies consist of a short list of steps:

  • Gather some friends and family, then launch the boat and tie it to a pier or dock.
  • Pass around a celebratory drink champagne, wine, or whatever you prefer is acceptable.
  • Place a green, leafy branch in the boat to represent a safe return to land.
  • Name the boat, make a toast to it, and pour some of the libation over the boats bow.
  • Go for a boat ride!
  • If you decide to throw caution into the wind and break an actual bottle of champagne across the bow, remember that champagne bottles are extremely thick and difficult to smash. And not only is it considered bad luck when the bottle doesnt break on the first swing, you may also cause some gel coat damage if you try to smash it on the hullside. A stainless-steel bow pulpit or cleat makes a much better target. And placing the bottle inside a mesh bag is considered appropriate.
